S-E WOLVERINES 45 PETERSBURG, 92-43

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team pulled away from Petersburg late on Friday night to 45 the Buffaloes, 92-43, in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in district play.

The Wolverines received to open the contest, and they wasted no time finding the endzone. After taking over at the Petersburg 30-yard line, senior, Evan DeLeon, fired a first-down pass to a wide open Dereck Rosalez, in the endzone for the first score of the game. DeLeon booted the kick through the uprights to put the Wolverines in front, 8-0.

The Buffaloes would respond, as they took over on first down, at their own 31-yard line. Dillon Bruington picked up eight yards on the first play from scrimmage, but a false start on the next play backed them up to, second and 11 at their own 34-yard line. However, on second and long, Bruington broke loose for a 46-yard touchdown run. The drop-kick was good to tie the game, 8-8, with 9:31 left to play in the opening quarter.

Springlake-Earth took over on offense in Petersburg territory and on first down, DeLeon’s pass for Rosalez in the endzone fell incomplete. DeLeon would get loose on second down, scrambling for a fist down, taking the ball down to the 23-yard line. Roel Fuentes carried the ball on the next play for the Wolverines, taking it down to the seven-yard line to set up first and goal. On first and goal, DeLeon would punch it in on a run to the left side for a seven-yard touchdown run. He nailed the kick after to put the Wolverines back in front, 16-8, with just under eight minutes to play in the quarter.

Petersburg, though, would answer again, capping off an eightplay drive with a one-yard touchdown run up the middle by Jeremy Garcia. The one-point pass to Bruington was good, as the Buffaloes cut the lead to, 16-15, with 5:28 to play in the first quarter.

On the very next play, senior, Trace Goodman, ran a kick-off back for a touchdown, but the play was negated by a block in the back penalty, bringing the ball all the way back to the Wolverines’ 29-yard line.

On first down, DeLeon connected with Goodman for a huge play, taking the ball all the way down to the Buffaloes 18-yard line. Fuentes carried the ball on first down and picked up eight yards to make it second and seven and on the following play Goodman took the ball on a reverse to the left side, but was stopped short of the goal line, bringing up first and goal from the two-yard line. They would punch it in on the next play, as senior, Davey Crandall rolled out to his right and found senior, Josh Samaron, for the two-yard touchdown pass. The PAT by DeLeon was good, making the score, 24-15.

The Buffaloes would answer with 1:37 remaining in the quarter on an 11-yard passing touchdown. The one-point conversion to Jude Thompson was good, making the score, 24-22, with the Wolverines still in front.

Springlake-Earth got the ball at their own 37-yard line to start the next drive and they took the ball down to the Petersburg 10-yard line on a series of runs by DeLeon and Fuentes to close out the first quarter. They faced a fourth and goal from the nine-yard line to open the second quarter, but it was no problem, as junior, Braxton Ethridge, scored on the nine-yard touchdown run to make the score, 32-22, after the kick by DeLeon, with 9:48 remaining in the first half.

The Buffaloes would no go away, as they again answered, finishing off a near three-minute drive with a 32-yard touchdown through the air that was caught by Bruington with just under seven minutes to play in the half. The kick was no good, leaving the score, 32-28.

The Wolverines wasted no time responding, as the kick-off was fielded at the one-yard line by Ethridge, who navigated the defense before breaking free down the far sideline for a 79-yard kickoff return touchdown. The kick by DeLeon sailed through the uprights, making the score, 40-28, with 6:55 to go in the quarter.

The Buffaloes took the ball down to the Wolverine 15-yard line on their next drive, but on fourth and 10, Bruington was stopped for a loss by senior, Dori Samarron, for a turnover on downs with 4:50 left to play in the half.

The Wolverines took over at their own 28-yard line and twoplays later, Ethridge scrambled to his left, before cutting it back across the field for a 24-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left to play in the first half. The kick by DeLeon was good, pushing their lead out to, 48-28.

Petersburg would put their next drive in the endzone on a one-yard passing touchdown to Joe Gicante with just under two minutes to play in the quarter and the one-point conversion pass to Thompson was good, trimming the lead to, 48-35.

The Wolverines, though, would not be denied, as they closed out the first half with a five-play, 50-yard drive, that ended with a fiveyard touchdown run by Tim Tanaro, with 27 seconds remaining in the half. The DeLeon nailed the PAT, making the score, 56-35, as the teams went to the locker room for halftime.

Petersburg got the ball to begin the second half, but on fourth and seven, a fumble was recovered by Samarron at the Wolverines, 34-yard line with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter.

Springlake-Earth turned the turnover into points on their next play, as Ethridge took off to his left on first down, before cutting it back across the field for a 47-yard touchdown run. The kick by DeLeon was on the money, making the score, 62-35, with 8:04 remaining in the quarter.

The Buffaloes responded on their next drive, as Bruington broke loose on second down for a 45-yard touchdown run with 7:20 to play in the quarter. The kick was good, cutting the lead to, 62-43.

With 4:23 remaining in the quarter, DeLeon hit Rosalez for a oneyard touchdown pass on third down, pushing their lead to, 70-43, after the kick by DeLeon.

The Buffaloes were threatening again on their next drive with a first and goal from the 10-yard line, but a fumbled snap was again recovered by Samarron, giving the Wolverines the ball with 3:09 to play in the quarter.

On first down, Ethridge got the ball, dropping back waiting for someone to come open downfield. He fired a pass to Fuentes who broke a tackle taking the ball across the field and down the near sideline for a 71-yard touchdown. DeLeon’s kick was good, making the score, 78-43, with 2:48 remaining in the quarter.

The Buffaloes offensive woes continued, as another fumbled snap on third down was recovered by Goodman with 49 seconds to play in the quarter.

The Wolverines kept their foot on the throttle, as Ethridge rushed for a 49-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 86-43, after the kick by DeLeon, with 39 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The Buffaloes took their next possession into the fourth quarter, but on fourth and goal from the Wolverines’ 15-yard line, the quarterback was sacked by Rosalez at the Petersburg 31-yard line for a turnover on downs with 5:45 to play in the game.

Springlake-Earth looked to put the game away on the next play, as Fuentes carried the ball up the middle, but he fumbled it at the three-yard line and it was recovered by Petersburg with just under five minutes to play in the game.

Petersburg ran the clock down to 1:25, but on fourth and 15, Garcia caught a pass, but was pushed out well short of the line to gain, for a turnover on downs.

Springlake-Earth would put the nail in the coffin on the next play, as Ethridge rushed for a 31-yard touchdown, making the final score, 92-43.

The Wolverines have a big district game against Nazareth next Friday on the road.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
