LADY CATS WIN BIG MATCH OVER FILLIES, 3-1

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team won a huge match in district play on Saturday when they took down the Denver City Fillies, 3-1, at Wildcat Gym.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 6-2 in district play.

The Fillies delivered a kill to open set one, but the hit by Sucely Villa on the next play sailed out of bounds to tie the set, 1-1. The Fillies sent another hit out of bounds on the next play, to put Littlefield in front, 2-1, but the Lady Cats couldn’t capitalize, as a save attempt by senior, Brynna Ray, fell short of the net, tying the set once more, 2-2.

Amber Carter delivered a kill for Denver City, but sophomore, Kyndal Edgemon, answered with a kill for Littlefield to keep the set knotted up, 3-3. The teams continued to go back-and-forth until a kill attempt by Carter landed out of bounds, making the score, 19-18.

The Fillies hit a ball into the net and senior, Ashtyn Parker, followed it up with a kill to put the Lady Cats in front, 21-18. Carter had a kill blocked by the Lady Cats, as the Fillies took a time out to talk things over, trailing Littlefield, 22-18.

Out of the break, Parker delivered a kill and Denver City followed it up with a hit out of bounds to make the score, 24-18. On the next hit, Sydney Roberts was called for a double-hit, giving Littlefield set one, 25-18.

The Fillies would rally back to take set two, 22-25, to even the match at a set apiece.

The Lady Cats fell into an, 0-2, hole to begin set three and fell behind by as many as four, before they would rally back to tie the set, 6-6, on a kill by junior, Madi son McNeese.

Senior, Danielle Zapata’s, serve went unreturned, but her next serve fell short of the net, keeping the set tied, 7-7. Denver City took a two-point lead on a hit by Zapata that landed out of bounds to make the score, 9-11, but Edgemon answered with a kill to regain the serve for the Lady Cats.

The Fillies sent a hit out of bounds to tie the set, 11-11, and Carter sent a hit into the net on the next play to give Littlefield the lead, 12-11. After several backand-forths, Carter dropped in a tip for a kill, forcing the Lady Cats to take a time out with the Fillies in front, 16-18.

Out of the break, Edgemon sent a hit into the net, but Victoria Rodriguez’s next serve for Denver City sailed out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 17-19. Littlefield would rally and take a, 22-21, lead as Zapata served up an ace and they followed it up with another ace from Zapata, as Denver City took a time out, trailing 23-21.

Carter answered with a kill out of the break for the Fillies and Zapata was called for an illegal hit on the following play, tying the set, 23-23. Junior, Kaeleigh Logan, sent a hit out of bounds, but the Fillies couldn’t close out the set, as the hit by Denver City didn’t make it over the net, tying things up, 24-24.

The teams each surrendered a point, before Denver City sent a hit out of bounds to make the score, 26-25, and on the next play, Parker dropped in a short kill to close out the set, 27-25, to put the Lady Cats up, 2-0, in the match.

The Lady Cats opened up set four on a, 3-0, scoring run, but the Fillies would rally back to tie things up, 3-3, on a hit out of bounds by the Lady Cats. Rodriguez sent a serve short of the net for Denver City, but Carter answered with a kill to keep the score tied, 4-4.

Denver City jumped out to a, 5-7, lead, before a save try by Rodriguez didn’t make it over the net for the Fillies and Carter sent a hit out of bounds, knotting the set up, 7-7.

The chess match continued until Villa sent a hit out of bounds, tying the set, 9-9. The Fillies were called for a double-hit on the next play and on the following sequence, Melissa Soto sent a kill into the net, making the score, 11-9. Sophomore, Kennadi Hanlin, served up an ace for Littlefield, and Denver City followed it up with a hit out of bounds by Soto to extend the Littlefield lead to, 13-9. McNeese followed it up with a kill, as the Fillies called for a time out to talk things over, trailing, 14-9.

Out of the break, Logan sent a hit out of bounds and McNeese sent a hit into the net on the following play, cutting the lead to, 14-11, before the Fillies were called for an illegal attack, making the score, 15-12.

Denver City would tied the set a few plays later, as Carter delivered a kill to make the score, 20-20, but the Lady Cats would proceed to score the final five points to take the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
