The Springlake-EarthLadyWolverines’ varsity basketball team took down the Olton Fillies on Tuesday, at Wolverine
With the win, the Lady Wolverines improve to 3-3 overall on the season, while the Fillies fall to a mark of2-5 on the year.
Senior, Carsann Baker, was fouled on a shot attempt to open the game; she converted both five throws to put the Lady Wolverines in front, 2-0. On their next possession, junior, Sayler Beerwinkle, was fouled on an attempt KarlaArriola; she split the free throws to stretch their lead to, 3-0, with 7:10 to play in the opening quartet
Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up for the Lady Wolverines and sophomore, Kani Holmes, buried a three from the left wing to make it an, 8-0, scoring nm for Springlake-Earth.
With 4:27 remaining, Beerwinkle was fouled on an attemptby Makenly Smith. She split the free throws to extend their lead to, 9-0. After a pair of missed free throws by Smith, Holmes drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Beerwinkle, who dropped in a lay-up to push the lead to, 11-0.
With2:21 remaining in the firstquarter, Smith was fouled on an attempt by Holmes; she converted both five throws to get the Fillies on the board, trimming the lead to, 11-2. Smith followed it up with a drive to the basket for a lay-up on their next possession, but on the other end, sophomore, Halee Toscano, was fouled on a thirdchance try by Shaylee Leathers. She knocked downboth five throws, pushing the lead back out to, 13-4, with under one minute to play in the guarter.
With time winding down in the quarter, Beerwinkle buried a three from the right wing offofthe assist from freshman, Taytum Goodman, making the score, 16-4, as the first quarter came to a close.
Arriola dropped in a lay-up to open the second quarter for Olton and on their next possession, Smith was fouled on an attempt by junior, Mahalia Delgado. Smith split the five throws to cut the lead to single-digits, 16-7.
Freshman, Sydney Furr, took a charge on Celestte Ramirez and the Lady Wolverines capitalized, as Beerwinkle dropped in a lay-up offof the assist from Goodman, drawing an and-one foul onAniola. The fiee throw was no good, but Delgado was there for the offensive rebound, which led to another lay-up for Beerwinkle, who was fouled on the play by Jasmine Reyna. The free throw was good making the score, 21-7, with 3:33 remaining in the first half.
Reyna was fouled on the floor on back-to-back plays by Delgado and Baker. She split the flee throws, making the score, 21-9. Kylee Noack was fouled on the floor by Goodman and made one-of-two at the line, trimming the lead to, 21-10. Smith dropped in a lay-up for Olton to cut the lead to, 21-12, but in the final minute of the half, Baker was fouled on an attempt by Smith and converted both flee throws, making the score, 23-12, going into the locker room at halftime.
Aniola opened the third quarter with a lay-up for Olton, but on the other end, Goodman hit Baker for a lay-up and Toscano followed it up with a layup off of the assist from Beerwinkle, pushing their lead back out to, 27-14. Leathers drove the right side for a lay-up for Olton, but Beerwinkle answered, as she dropped in a lay-up offofthe assist from Baker, extending their lead to, 29-16.
Arriola responded with a lay-up for Olton and on their next possession, Leathers drew a blocking foul on Goodman, earning a trip to the line. She converted both five throws, cutting the lead to nine points, 29-20. With just under three minutes to play in the quarter, Fun- was fouled on a put-back attempt by Leathers; she split the free throws making the score, 30-20.
Holmes hit Delgado on a cut to the basket fora lay-up and followed it up with a lay-up off ofa steal to push the lead back out to 14 points, with just over two minutes to play in the quarter. Smith was fouled on a put-back attempt by Delgado. She split the five throws to make the score, 34-21. Holmes knocked down a three for the Lady Wolverines from the left elbow off of the assist from junior Mickey Fuentes, but on the other end, Marisa Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Delgado earning a trip to the line. She made one out oftwo at the line to trim the lead to, 37-22, as the third guarter came to a close.
Toscano was fouled on a shot attempt by Rodriguez to open the fourth quarter; she sank both five throws, as Olton took a time out with 6:48 to play in the game. Out ofthe break, Arriola knocked down a pull-up jumper for Olton and Smith scored a lay-up off of a steal to cut the lead to, 39-26, as Springlake-Earth took a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Smith drove the right side fora lay-up, but on the other end, Holmes was fouled on the floor byArriola. She missed the free throw, but Beerwinkle was there for the rebound, and on the following play, Delgado drew a foul on the floor on Dayanara Lara. She made one out of two at the line to stretch their lead to, 40-28.
Abigail Garcia dropped in a lay-up for Olton, but Beerwinkle answered on the other end with a lay-up off of the assist from Toscano, making the score, 42-30, with 2:12 remaining. Mercedes Rivera split a pair of five throws, after being fouled by Goodman, who fouled out ofthe contest, trimming the lead to, 42-31.
Toscano and Reyna each split a pair offree throws, as Springlake-Earth held on to take the contest over Olton, 44-33.
Beerwinkle led the Lady Wolverines in scoring with a game-high 18 points. Toscano and Holmes each netted eight points, while Baker tallied six points, Delgado chipped in three points and Fun- finished with one point
Smith led the Fillies in scoring with 12 points, while Arriola finished with eight points and Leathers and Reyna each added fourpoinis. Garcia finished with two points and Noack, Rivera and Rodriguez each finished with one in the contest.
The Lady Wolverines opened district play against Cotton Center on Friday. Results were not available at webs time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a road game at Lazbuddie.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
