The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team had a make-up game with Petersburg on Monday, where they runruled the Buffaloes, 17-7, in five innings.
With the win, the Wolverines improve to 5-1 in district play on the year.
Tyler Tanaro made quick work of the Buffaloes in the top of the first inning, as he got Colton Sharples to strike out swinging and he got Ethan Cedillo to strike out looking. Tristan Bigham chopped out to Tanaro on the mound to retire the side.
In the bottom of the first, Slade Beerwinkle struck out swinging for out number one, but Braden Bradley singled to right field and took second on a pitch and third on a past ball, before Alex Alvarez lofted an RBI-single over third base to put the Wolverines in front, 1- 0. Alvarez stole second on a pitch, before Xavyer Mosqueda drew a walk; Alvarez took third on the play, as the ball got by the catcher, putting runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth.
Mosqueda took second on a pitch, as Alvarez scored on the throw down to second base to make the score, 2-0, as Matthew Garza popped up to Corbin McWilliams in shallow right field for out number two. Tanaro drew a walk, as Mosqueda took third on a past ball, putting runners on the corners. Tanaro took second on a pitch, as Mosqueda scored on the throw down to second that was missed by the shortstop, Cedillo, making the score, 3-0. Tanaro took third on a pitch, before Donovan Stiggers grounded out to Darian Marquez at first base to end the inning.
In the top of the second inning, Jeremy Garcia was hit by a pitch to lead things off for Petersburg and Lucas Rendon singled on an error by Bradley at second base, before McWilliams drew a walk to load the bases for the Buffaloes. Parraz ripped a two-RBI single to left field and took second on the throw home by Mosqueda that was over the head of Beerwinkle at the plate, trimming the lead to, 3-2.
Tanaro would bounce back as he got Aiden Beversdorf and Marquez both to strike out looking. A thrown down to third by Beerwinkle got by Garza, allowing a run to score to tie the game, 3- 3, but Tanaro got Sharples to strike out swinging to retire the side.
In the bottom of the second inning, Froyland Agundiz was struck out swinging to lead things off, but Tim Tovar doubled to left field to give the Wolverines a base runner. He was picked off at third by Sharples for out number two, but Beerwinkle beat out an infield single to shortstop to give the Wolverines another runner.
Bradley was hit by a pitch and Alvarez drew a walk to load the bases, before Mosqueda hit a two-RBI double to left-center field to put the Wolverines back in front, 5-3. Garza followed it up with an RBI-single deep in the hole to Cedillo at shortstop, stretching the lead to, 6-3.
Garza took second on a past ball, before Tanaro had a two-RBI double fall inside the right field line, extending their lead to, 8-3. Tanaro took third on a pitch, before Stiggers grounded out to Bigham at third base to end the inning.
The Wolverines kept the Buffaloes quiet in the top of the third inning, and in the bottom half of the side, McWilliams relieved Rendon on the mound for Petersburg. Agundiz, Tovar and Beerwinkle drew three consecutive walks to load the bases for Springlake-Earth and Bradley walked to bring in a run, making the score, 9-3.
Tovar scored on a past ball, before Alvarez walked to reload the bases with the Wolverines in front, 10-3, and Mosqueda unloaded the bases with a three-RBI double to the left-field fence, pushing their lead to, 13-3. Garza chopped out to McWilliams on the mound for out number one, as Mosqueda advanced to third on the play, but Tanaro knocked an RBI-single through the left side to push their lead to, 14-3. Stiggers was hit by a pitch, but Agundiz popped up behind the pitcher with the infield fly rule in effect and Stiggers was tagged out at second to end the inning.
The Buffaloes struck back in the top of the fourth inning, as Rendon hit a grounder to Garza at third and reached second on a throwing error to first to give Petersburg a runner in scoring position. Rendon took third on a past ball, before McWilliams drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Buffaloes. Tanaro got Parraz to strike out looking for out number one.
Beversdorf hit a sacrifice grounder to Bradley at second base, who got the out at first as a run scored and McWilliams advanced to third, cutting the lead to, 14- 4, with two outs. Marquez hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped by Alvarez, bringing in a run to make the score 14-5. Sharples singled to right field, but Tanaro got Cedillo to strike out swinging for out number three to retire the side.
Marquez relieved McWilliams on the mound for Petersburg to begin the bottom half of the fourth inning, as Tovar was hit by a pitch. He took second and third on past balls, before Beerwinkle hit a sacrifice grounder to the pitcher, who threw to first for the out, as Tovar scored to make the score, 15-5. Bradley drew a walk and took second on a past ball and third on a bad throw back to the pitcher.
Alvarez popped up to Marquez on the mound, but the ball was dropped for an RBI single to stretch the lead to, 165. Alvarez took second on a past ball, before Mosqueda struck out swinging for out number two. Alvarez would swipe third and score on past balls, before Garza was walked, however later in the inning, Garza was tagged out in a rundown between second and third to end the inning with the Wolverines in front, 175.
The Buffaloes added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, as the Wolverines went on to runrule Petersburg, 17-7, in Earth.
Tanaro started on the mound for the Wolverines, pitching four innings giving up three runs and two walks, while earning nine strike outs. Agundiz closed out the game giving up three walks and two runs, while earning two strike outs.
The Wolverines were at Lockney on Friday to take on Petersburg. Results were not available at press time. The Wolverines will be at New Home for a non-district game with the Leopards on Tuesday.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
