Wolverines take down Jayton, 13-7

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team took down the Jayton Jaybirds in their second meeting of district play on Friday, 13-7.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 4-1 in district play.

Sean Stanaland singled over third base to get the game underway Friday afternoon, but Bode Ham grounded out to Matthew Garza at third base for out number one, Stanaland took third on the throw to first and scored on the play, as the throw from Tim Tovar at first base got by Garza at third base to make the score, 1- 0. Xavyer Mosqueda, though, got Jarret Herzog to ground out to Slade Beerwinkle at shortstop for out number two and got Cooper Spray to strike out swinging to retire the side.

Beerwinkle led off the bottom half of the side for Springlake-Earth, as he laid down a swinging bunt on the third-base side that was fielded by Stanaland and thrown to first for the out. Braden Bradley was hit by a pitch to give the Wolverines a base runner and he took second on a wild pitch, before Alex Alvarez struck out looking for out number two. Bradley stole third on a past ball, before Mosqueda ripped an RBIsingle into left field to tie the game, 1-1.

Garza followed it up with an RBIstand up tripple that got under the glove of Jarret Herzog in center field to put the Wolverines in front, 2-1, but Tyler Tanaro struck out looking to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Robert Flores relieved Mosqueda on the mound for the Wolverines, as he got Justin Collins to pop up to Tanaro behind the plate for out number one. Brody Dempsey singled up the middle, but Ayden Salazar grounded out to Flores on the mound for out number two. Jaydon Rivera singled to center field to put runners on the corners for Jayton, but Flores got Caleb Herzog to strike out swinging to retire the side.

The Wolverines stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the second inning and in the top of the third, Flores was relieved by Garza on the mound.

Stanaland drew a lead-off walk for the Jaybirds and he stole second on a pitch and took third on the throw down that got by Beerwinkle at second base, before Ham sent an RBI-single to left field to tie the game, 2-2.

Ham took second on a past ball, before Garza got Jarret Herzog to strike out swinging for out number one. Spray knocked an RBIsingle into left field to put the Jaybirds back in front, 3-2, but Garza recovered, as he got Collins to strike out swinging for out number two and he got Dempsey to pop up to Tovar at first base to retire the side.

Alvarez doubled to left field to lead off the bottom of the third for Springlake-Earth and Mosqueda hit a sacrifice grounder to Salazar at third, who bobbled it, but got the out at first, as Alvarez advanced to third on the play with one out. Garza hit a sacrifice fly ball to Jarret Herzog in left-center field that allowed Alvarez to tag up and score from third to tie the game, 3-3, and Tanaro followed it up with an inside of the park homerun on a throwing error in from left-center field, putting the Wolverines back in front, 4-3.

Donovan Stiggers was hit by a pitch and Tovar drew a walk, before Flores singled on a line drive to third base off of the glove of Salazar, loading the bases for Springlake-Earth. Beerwinkle beat out an infield single to Collins at shortstop to stretch their lead to, 5-3, but Bradley struck out looking to end the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Salazar drew a lead-off walk for Jayton and took second on the next play on a bad throw down to first by Tanaro, before Rivera struck out swinging for out number one. Caleb Herzog was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike, but Salazar advanced to third on the play with two outs.

Stanaland ripped an RBI-single to left field and took second on an error by Flores, trimming the lead to, 5-4, and Ham followed it up with an RBI-double to left-center field to tie the game, making the score, 5-5. Garza would get Jarret Herzog to strike out looking to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Alvarez grounded out to Salazar at third base for out number one, but Mosqueda doubled to the leftcenter field fence to give Springlake-Earth a base runner. Garza popped up to Collins in shallow left field for out number two, but the Jaybirds intentionally walked Tanaro and Stiggers made them pay, as he singled on a grounder to Stanaland on the mound that was bobbled, loading the bases for Springlake-Earth.

Tovar drew an RBI walk to put Springlake-Earth back in front, 65, before Flores flew out to Jarret Herzog in center field to end the inning.

Bradley relieved Garza on the mound in the top of the fifth inning, and he was able to keep the Jaybirds off the board, bringing the Wolverines back to the plate in the bottom of the fifth.

Beerwinkle led off with a double over the left fielder and Bradley followed it up with an RBI-single through the left side on an error by the left fielder, making the score, 7-5. Bradley took second on a pitch and third on a past ball, before Alvarez drew a walk, putting runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth. Mosqueda was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Garza grounded out to second, but two runs scored to stretch their lead to, 9-5.

Mosqueda took third on a past ball and Tanaro was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth, as Dempsey relieved Stanaland on the mound for Jayton. Stiggers struck out swinging for out number two, but Tovar was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Wolverines. Mosqueda scored on a past ball, as Tanaro advanced to third on the play. Tanaro would go on to score on a past ball, as Tovar went first to third on the play with the score extended to, 11-5. Tovar tried to score on a ball away from the catcher, but Dempsey flipped it to the catcher at the plate to tag Tovar at the plate for out number three.

Bradley got the Jaybirds to go three-up-and-three down in the top of the sixth inning, and in the bottom half of the side, Flores singled down the third-base line to lead things off. Flores took third on a pitch and scored on a throw down to third that got by the third baseman, making the score, 12-5, before Beerwinkle drew a walk.

Bradley ripped an RBI-double to right field to extend the lead to, 13-5, and Alvarez singled past third base to put runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth. Bradley, though, was tagged out in a rundown between third and home, as Alvarez advanced to second with one out. Mosqueda flew out to Jarret Herzog in center field for out number two, and Alvarez was doubled up trying to tag up and take third on the play to end the inning.

Jayton earned back-to-back walks to begin the seventh inning and Spray hit an RBI-single up the middle to trim the lead to, 13-6. Collins singled on an error by Tovar at first to load the bases for Jayton, but Herzog scored on a past ball, but Spray was thrown out at third on the play, as Collins advanced to second on the play with one out and the lead cut to, 13-7.

Dempsey grounded out to Bradley on the mound, who got the out at first, as Collins advanced to third on the play with two outs. Salazar drew a walk, as Bradley was relieved on the mound by Mosqueda, who returned to the mound, after pitching the first inning. Rivera was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Caleb Herzog struck out swinging to end the game.

Mosqueda pitched 1.1 innings for the Wolverines, giving up one run, while earning two strike outs, while Flores pitched one inning, earning two strike outs. Garza pitched two innings for the Wolverines, giving up two walks and four runs, while earning five strike outs, and Bradley pitched 2.2 innings for the Wolverines, giving up two runs and four walks, while earning two strike outs.
