The Springlake- Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team went on the road on Thursday night and took down the Happy Cowboys, 58-22, at Cowboy Corral.
With the win, the Wolverines improve to 2-1 in district play.
Happy got the ball to open the contest, taking over at their own 20 yard line, after the touchback from Robert Flores.
Kaden Baker took a run up the middle for a short gain before being brought down by Bryan Longoria and the pass from Kreid Cluck on second down, was broken up by Longoria, looking for AJ Seal. On third and long, Cluck connected with Mason Wolf on the left side, as he took the ball up to their 31-yard line to set up fourth and four.
The Cowboys would get flagged for a false start and on fourth and nine, Cluck’s pass fell incomplete looking for JP Baggerman on the right side for a turnover on downs with 8:10 to play in the opening quarter.
The Wolverines took over at the Happy 26-yard line, as Froylan Agundiz kept it himself on first down, taking off around the right side for a solid pick-up. On second and four from the Happy 14- yard line, Agundiz dropped back and connected with Flores on the right side for the 14-yard touchdown with 7:52 to play in the first quarter. The kick by Flores was good, putting the Wolverines in front, 80.
Another touchback from Flores on the kick-off gave Happy the ball at their own 20-yard line, but they were unable to get anything going. On fourth and six from their own 29-yard line, they elected to go for it and Cluck’s pass to Baggerman was broken up by Kaylob Frietze for another turnover on downs with 5:37 remaining in the quarter.
The Wolverine offense cooled off on their second possession, as they went backwards on first down, after a fumbled toss by Longoria was recovered, making it second and 21 from the Happy 35-yard line. Agundiz scrambled for a few yards on second down, but his pass to Longoria on third down fell incomplete as he avoided a sack, bringing up fourth and 16. The Wolverines went for it on fourth down, as Agundiz hit Donovan Stiggers on a screen to the right, but he was stopped short of the sticks for a turnover on downs with 4:01 to play in the quarter.
Happy took over at their own 25-yard line, but after moving the ball across midfield to the Springlake-Earth 31-yard line, they were faced with a fourth and seven. Cluck connected with Luke Dempsey, but he was tackled short of the line to gain by Agundiz for a turnover on downs with just 38 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
The Wolverine offense took over at their own 31yard line, as Agundiz called his own number, taking it around the left side for a big gain to flip the field. Stiggers would carry it up the middle to close out the first quarter for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines had second and 13 to open the second frame, as Agundiz kept it himself around the left side for a touchdown with 9:51 remaining in the first half. The kick from Flores was no good, leaving the score, 14-0.
Flores’ onside kick try was covered by Baker at the Happy 35-yard line, as the Cowboys came back out on offense looking to generate any kind of momentum.
Baker picked up seven yards on a first down run to the left side and Cluck would connect with Wolf to move the chains for the Cowboys, but the drive would stall out and on fourth and six, Cluck connected with Wolf, but he was stopped short of the sticks by Agundiz for a turnover on downs with 7:03 left to play in the half.
Springlake-Earth took over at their own eight-yard line, as Longoria was stopped for no gain on first down. Agundiz picked up six yards on a keeper around the left side, but on third down, Longoria connected with Flores, who got blasted by the Happy defense, bringing up fourth and 10 from their own 14-yard line.
The Wolverines would roll the dice on fourth down, as Agundiz connected with Stiggers on a pass to the right, as he turned it up the sideline taking it up to the 29-yard line to move the chains for Springlake-Earth.
Two plays later, Agundiz would call his own number taking it around the left side for a 51-yard touchdown run with 3:44 to play in the second quarter. The kick from Flores sailed through the uprights, making the score, 22-0.
Happy was forced to punt the ball away on their next possession with just over two minutes to play in the half, as Springlake-Earth took over at their own 20-yard line.
The Wolverines were able to drive the ball down into Happy territory, but were unable to come away with points, taking a, 22-0, lead into the locker room at halftime.
Springlake-Earth came up empty on their first possession of the second half, and Happy answered on the very next play, as Dempsey broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown run with 7:54 to play in the third quarter. The PAT from Dempsey was good, trimming the lead to, 228.
Josiah Castillo returned the next kick-off out to the Wolverine’s 21-yard line, where the offense took over for their next possession.
Back-to-back runs from Agundiz gave the Wolverines a fresh set of downs at the Happy 35-yard line and Longoria took a toss around the right side for a 35-yard touchdown, but it was negated by a holding penalty.
On first and long, Agundiz rolled to his left, hitting Stiggers on a throwback to his right, as Stiggers turned it up the sideline for a big gain, taking it down to the Happy 14-yard line to set up first and goal for the Wolverines. Two plays later, Agundiz would keep it himself for the 14-yard touchdown run with 5:33 left to play in the third quarter. The kick from Flores was good, stretching the lead to, 30-8.
Levi Hill recovered an onside kick for the Wolverines giving them the ball at the Happy 32-yard line with 5:30 to go in the quarter.
The Wolverines were flagged for a holding penalty on first down, backing them up to their own 38-yard line, but on first and long,Agundiz broke loose down the Springlake-Earth sideline for a monster gain, taking the ball down to the Happy seven-yard line to set up first and goal. On first and goal, Agundiz faked the handoff to Stiggers, hitting Longoria on a pass to the right for the seven-yard touchdown with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter. The kick from Flores was blocked, leaving the score, 36-8.
Happy would respond on the next series, after covering the onside kick, Cluck dropped back and found a wide-open Baggerman for the 40-yard touchdown pass with 3:58 to play in the third. The kick from Dempsey was good, trimming the lead to, 36-16.
Springlake-Earth took over at midfield, after the Happy kick-off rolled out of bounds. Stiggers was stopped for a loss on first down, but on the next play,Agundiz dropped back and hit Frietze streaking across the field for a huge gain, as they took it down to the Happy 10yard line to set up first and goal.
Three plays later, Agundiz would connected with Longoria for the eight-yard touchdown pass, making the score, 44-16, after the kick from Flores with 1:55 to play in the third quarter.
Happy took over at their own 30-yard line and they were able to take the ball down to the Springlake-Earth two-yard line, as the third quarter came to a close.
Baker would punch in the two-yard score to open the fourth quarter, but the kick from Dempsey was blocked by Longoria, making it 44-22, with 9:57 remaining in the contest.
Frietze recovered the onside kick attempt from Happy, as the Wolverine offense took over at their own 35-yard line. Agundiz hit Flores on first down for 11 yards to take the ball into Happy territory and Longoria followed it up with a bug run to set up first and goal from the 15-yard line. A false start would back the Wolverines up five yards and Agundiz’s pass for Frietze fell incomplete,bringingupthirdand goal.
Agundiz scrambled on third down taking it up the middle before cutting to the left side for 18-yards, as Springlake-Earth took a time out with 7:30 to play in the game.
They lined up to go for it on fourth and goal from the twoyard line, asAgundiz scrambled before taking off, diving for the goal line for the two-yard score. The kick from Flores was good, putting the Wolverines in front, 52-22, with 7:22 to play in the game.
During Happy’s next possession, Cluck was picked off by Agundiz with 5:10 remaining in the game, giving the Wolverines the ball at their own 20-yard line.
The Wolverines kept the ball on the ground with runs from Stiggers and Longoria, as they took the ball up to their own 38-yard line. On second and long, Longoria broke loose around the right side for a 42yard touchdown run with 2:39 to play. Flores’ kick was no good, leaving the score, 58-22.
After a turnover on downs from each team, Cluck was picked off by Agundiz with eight seconds remaining, as Springlake-Earth went on to take down the Cowboys, 5822.
The Wolverines will host the Kress Kangaroos on Friday for senior night.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
