The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity basketball team fell to the Plains Cowboys on Thursday, 64-46, in their Whiteface Tournamentopener.
With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 0-1 in tournament play on the weekend.
Plains opened the contest on a, 40, scoring run, before junior, JJ Jaramillo, buried a three from the left wing to cut the lead to, 4-3. Junior, Gavin Gonzales dropped in a put-back off of the miss by senior, Micah Sanchez to put the Wolverines in front, 5-4, but on the other end, Alan Gallegos was fouled on an attempt by Sanchez earning a trip to the line. He split the free throws to tie the game, 5--5, with just under five minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Tyler Vargas sent an outlet pass down court to Fermin Luna, who dropped in a lay-up and drew an andone foul on the play. He could not convert the free throw, leaving the Cowboys in front, 7-5. Adrian Contreras knocked down a three from the right wing for the Cowboys, but on the other end, senior,Alex Alvarez, was fouled on an attempt by Vargas. He made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 6-10, with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter.
Jaramillo knocked down a turnaround floater in the lane, but Plains answered with a three from the right wing by Gavin Broome, making the score, 13-8. Freshman, Froylan Agundiz dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play, but he could not convert the free throw, leaving the score, 13-10. Plains would score six unanswered points, before Jaramillo beat the buzzer with a floater off the glass to make the score, 19-12, as the first quarter came to a close.
Plains opened the second frame on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Sanchez was fouled on the floor by Luna, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. He missed the free throw, butAlvarez was there for the put-back to trim the lead to, 26-14, with under five minutes to play in the half. Alvarez scored another put-back, this time off of his own miss, as Plains called a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Alvarez picked up a steal, going coast-to-coast for the transition bucket and the Wolverines kept it going on their next possession, as Sanchez scored a layup through traffic to cut the lead to, 26-20, with 3:18 remaining in the half.
Vargas split a pair of free throws for Plains, but a few possessions later, Jaramillo buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Sanchez, making the score, 27-23, with 1:36 left to play in the half. Gallegos would drop in a lay-up to close out the half with Plains in front, 29-23.
Luna converted a pair of free throws and Broome split a pair to open the second half, before Alvarez answered with a three from the top of the key to trim the lead to, 32-26. Gallegos dropped in a lay-up for the Cowboys, but the Wolverines again answered with a three from the top of the key by Jaramillo, off of the assist from Alvarez, cutting the lead to, 3429.
Plains scored back-to-back buckets, before Alvarez dropped in a layup off of the assist from Jaramillo on the inbound play, but the Cowboys responded as Contreras scored a putback and Vargas buried a three, pushing the lead back out to, 43-31, with 2:42 to play in the third quarter.
Agundiz dropped in a lay-up for Springlake-Earth, but Gallegos answered with a lay-up and converted the and-one free throw to make the score, 46-33, going into the final quarter of play.
Plains opened the final quarter on a, 3-0, scoring run, before Agundiz kissed in a floater off the glass to trim the lead to, 49-35. The teams exchanged lay-ups and on the next play, Broome was fouled on an attempt by Sanchez; he converted both free throws to extend their lead to, 53-37. Alvarez dropped in a lay-up on the right side, as Plains took a time out to talk things over with just under four minutes to play in the game.
Out of the break, Plains went on a, 6-0, scoring run, before Jaramillo dropped in a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Broome. He converted the free throw, to cut the lead to, 6042, and followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Agundiz to trim the lead to, 60-44. Plains closed out the game on a, 4-2, run to take the contest, 64-46.
Jaramillo led the Wolverines in scoring with 18 points, and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Alvarez, who netted 16 points. Agundiz tallied six points, while Gonzales and Sanchez each finished with two points.
