The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team fell short in their comeback efforts on Thursday, falling to Post, 11-6, at the Lamb County Classic.
With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 1-1 in tournament play on the weekend.
Cameron Menchaca drew a lead-off walk for Post in the top of the first inning and Luca Perez doubled over Jacob Alvarez in center field, putting runners on second and third. Colton Hawkins knocked a two-RBI double down the left-field line to put the Antelopes in front, 2-0.
Landyn Garcia drew a walk to make it runner son first and second and Hawkins took third on a ball in the third and Garcia took second on a pitch to put two runners in scoring position for Post. Cooper Osborn knocked an RBIsingle to center field leaving runners on the corners with the score, 3-0.
Osborn took second on a pitch, and Daniel Carroll hit a two-RBI single to left-center field to push their lead to, 5-0. Bryan Longoria got EJ Soto to strike out swinging for out number one and Jax Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Longoria, who got the out at first as the runner advanced to second with two outs.
Isaiah Moreno ripped an RBItriple to left-center field to make the score, 6-0, and Kalvin followed it up with an RBI-double to center field to make the score, 7-0, before Luca Perez popped up to Timothy Tovar at second base to retire the side.
In the home-half of the first, Agundiz singled on an infield hit to second base and Robert Flores singled on an error by Garcia at shortstop. Tyler Tanaro had a pop up dropped in shallow right field, but Flores was thrown out at second base for out number one. Tanaro took second on a pitch, before Longoria struck out swinging for out number two.
Alvarez knocked a two-RBI single to center field to trim the lead to, 7-2, but Donovan Stiggers struck out swinging to end the inning.
Hawkins had a double fall in left field to begin the second inning for Post. He took third on a passed ball, before Garcia singled past Flores at third base to drive in a run, pushing the lead to, 8-2. Longoria got Osborn to strike out swinging for out number one. Garcia took third on a wild pitch and Carroll and Soto walked to load the bases, as Agundiz relieved Longoria on the mound for Springlake-Earth.
Jax Perez hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field that was caught by Alvarez for out number two, as run tagged up and scored from third to make the score, 9- 2. Moreno drew a walk to reload the bases for Post and Kalvin was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and Luca Perez drew an RBI-walk to push the lead to, 11-2, before Agundiz got Hawkins to strike out swinging to retire the side.
In the bottom of the second, Luis Fuentes singled to center field to lead things off and Tovar drew a walk before Nathan Ramos struck out swinging for out number one. Agundiz ripped an RBIdouble down the left-field line to trim the lead to, 11-3, and Flores hit a sacrifice grounder to third to score Tovar; Agundiz scored on an overthorw to the plate from first base, cutting the lead to, 11-5, with two outs. Tanaro, though would pop up to shortstop to end the inning.
Agundiz would keep the Antelopes quiet in the top of the third, as Garcia singled over third base, taking second on an error by the left fielder. Agundiz would get Osborn, Carroll and Soto all to go down swinging to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the third, Longoria struck out swinging for out number one, but Alvarez drew a walk and a bad pick-off to first by Luca Perez allowed Alvarez to score, trimming the lead to, 11-6. Fuentes singled up the middle, but he would be picked off by Luca Perez at second base to end the inning.
The score would stand, as Springlake-Earth fell to Post, 11-6.
Longoria pitched 1.1 innings, giving up seven hits, four walks and 11 runs, eight earned, while striking out two batters. Agundiz pitched 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and three walks, while earning six strikeouts.
