The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team won their Class 3A Bi-district play-off basketball game on Monday over Stanton, 45-30, in Denver City.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 18-13 overall on the season.
Ryan Williams drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Zeke Saenz for a lay-up to open the con-test and on their next possession, Elijah Salazar drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Jeremiah Trevino for a lay-up, as he drew an andone foul on Alex Flores. He converted the free throw to put the Wildcats in front, 5-0, with 5:04 to play in the first quarter.
Stanton took a time out with 4:18 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Aidan Galaviz drained a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Jahir Galindo to trim the lead to, 5-3. Ryan Williams drove the left side and dropped in a lay-up to push the lead to four points, but Stanton answered, as Flores dropped in a put-back off of his own miss to make it a onepossession game, 7-5, with 2:22 to play in the quarter.
Trevino dropped in a floater from the left baseline, but with time winding down in the quarter, Cody Hancock sank a three from the right elbow to make it a one-point Littlefield lead as the first quarter came to a close.
Salazar picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up to open the second frame, and on their next possession, Ryan Williams found Green in the right corner for a three in transition, as Stanton took a time out with 6:57 to play in the half, trailing the Wildcats, 14-8. Out of the break, Ryan Andler dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Flores, but Saenz responded with a putback off of his own miss on the other end to make it a six-point game for Littlefield, 16-10.
Stanton answered with a three from the right elbow, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:22 to play in the half. Out of the break, Flores dropped in a lay-up to make it a one-point Wildcat lead, 16-15. Trevino banked in a floater from the left side, but on the other end, Galindo was fouled on an attempt by Ryan Williams; he sank both free throws to cut the lead to, 1817, with 2:18 to play in the half.
On the other end, Trevino was fouled on an attempt and split the free throws to extend their lead to one possession, 19-17. Angelo Holly dropped in a lay-up in transition to tie the game, but Trevino knocked down a jumper from the left elbow off of an assist from Ryan Williams to put the Wildcats back in front, 21-19. Green delivered a block on Ethan Armendarez to send the Wildcats into the locker room with a two-point advantage, 21-19.
Green split a pair of free throws to open the second half for Littlefield and Ryan Williams hit Trevino in transition for a lay-up to push their lead to, 25-19. Ryan Williams followed it up with a putback off of his own miss to make it an eight-point lead for Littlefield, 27-19, as Stanton took a time out with 6:24 to play in the third quarter. Out of the break, Ryan Williams drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Trevino for a lay-up on the left side to push their lead to double-digits, 29-19.
With 4:37 to play in the quarter, Green picked up a steal and sent the outlet pass down court to Ryan Williams on the fast-break for a lay-up, making the score, 3119. Bret Davis knocked down back-to-back threes from the left side to cut the lead to, 31-25, and Andler took a charge on Saenz to regain possession for the Buffaloes with 1:37 remaining in the quarter.
With under one minute to play in the third, Saenz was fouled on a put-back attempt by Galindo; he made one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 32-25. With time winding down in the quarter, Galindo was fouled on a secondchance try by Salazar and sank both free throws to cut the lead to, 32-27, going into the final quarter of play.
Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Davis to open the final frame; he split the free throws and followed it up with a floater to extend their lead to, 35-27. With 5:28 remaining, Ryan Williams sent an outlet pass down court to Green, who dished it across the lane to Saenz for a lay-up in transition, pushing their lead to double-digits, 37-27.
Stanton took a time out with 5:19 to play in the game and out of the break, Galaviz drained a three from the top of the key, trimming the lead to, 37-30. Salazar answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Saenz and Ryan Williams followed it up with a spin to the basket for a lay-up on the left side, stretching their lead to, 41-30, with 3:32 left to play.
Stanton took a time out with 2:48 remaining, and out of the break, Green dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. He converted the free throw, pushing their lead to, 44-30. With time winding down in the game, Green was fouled on the floor by Davis; he made one-of-two shots on the one- in- one opportunity, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 45-30.
Trevino led the Wildcats in scoring with 18 points, while Ryan Williams and Green each tallied eight points, Saenz contributed seven points and Salazar finished with four points.
The Wildcats will take on the winner of Shallowater and Canadian in the Class 3A Area round of the basketball play-offs.
