Wildcats take down EAgles, 57-26

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team overcame a slow start on Tuesday, as they took down the Roosevelt Eagles, 57-26, at Wildcat Gym.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 13-6 overall, 2-2 in district play.

The Wildcats grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in the put-back to open the contest and Jayden Barrio followed it up with a three from the right wing off of an assist from Kam McCarty to stretch their lead to, 5-0. The Wildcats took a time out with 4:58 to play in the first quarter, and out of the break, Ryan Williams dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from McCarty, stretching the lead to, 7--0.

Cedric Murphy got the Eagles on the board with a lay-up off of the inbound pass under the basket, but on the other end, Chip Green was fouled on a put-back attempt by Murphy, earning a trip to the line. He sank both free throws to stretch the lead to, 9-2, but Roosevelt would respond, as Nate Casarez drained a three from the right elbow, trimming the lead to, 9-5.

Barrio answered with a three from the left wing off of the assist from McCarty, but the Eagles fired right back, as Murphy knocked down a three from the right wing, making the score, 12-8, with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter. The barrage of threes continued, as Williams drained one from the left elbow off of an assist from McCarty, and McCarty followed it up with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Kobe Mireles. He converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 18- 8, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over with 1:30 remaining in the frame.

Out of the break, Kason Grizzell was fouled on an attempt by Nate Castaneda; he converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 18-10, but in the closing seconds, Barrio sank a three from the left wing off of the assist from Williams to push their lead to, 21-10, as the first quarter came to a close.

Isaiah Mireles opened the second quarter with a three from the left elbow for the Eagles, but two plays later, Green went coast-tocoast finishing through contact for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Kobe Mireles. He drained the free throw to extend their lead to, 24-13.

Roosevelt took a time out with 5:24 to play in the half, and out of the break, Andrew Davis dropped in a lay-up, making the score, 2613. With 2:22 to play in the half, Casarez dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Jose Payan. He made the free throw and followed it up with a three from the top of the key to close out the half with the Wildcats in front, 28-19.

Kobe Mireles dropped in a fastbreak lay-up off of a turnover by Williams to open the second half, but with 3:47remaining in the third, Barrio dropped in a lay-up in transition and McCarty followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal to push the lead back out to, 32-21, as Roosevelt took a time out with 3:24 to play in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Casarez knocked down a jumper from the left elbow, but Green answered with a three from the left elbow on the other end, and McCarty followed it up with a fast-break layup, pushing their lead to, 37-23. With 1:20 left to play in the third, Casarez was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda; he made one-oftwo shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 37-24.

McCarty would drop in a floater in the lane to close out the third quarter, off of the assist from Castaneda, making the score, 3924, going into the final quarter of play.

Green opened the final frame with a three from the left wing off of an assist from Barrio, and Green followed it up with a steal taking it to the hoop for a lay-up, stretching the Wildcat lead to, 44-24. McCarty hit Green in transition for a lay-up and on their next possession, Barrio was fouled on an attempt by Grizzell, his third. Barrio sank one-of-two free throws, making the score, 47-24, with 6:03 left to play.

Williams tossed an outlet pass down court to Castaneda, who dished it across the lane to Barrio for a lay-up in transition, stretching the lead to, 49- 24, as Roosevelt took a time out with 4:35 left to play. Out of the break, Williams drove across the lane for a lay-up and he followed it up with a floater in the lane off of an assist from Green, making the score, 5124, as the Wildcats took a time out with 2:39 to play in the contest.

Out of the break, Jaden Zuniga knocked down a jumper in the lane for the Eagles, but Eizeah Coleman answered with a lay-up off of an assist from Ben Castillo and Davis followed it up with a drive through the middle for a lay- up, as Littlefield went on to defeat Roosevelt, 57-26.

The Wildcats were led by Green, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with four steals. Barrio contributed 14 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal, while McCarty tallied 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals, and Williams chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and two assists.

Davis added four points and two rebounds, while Coleman chipped in two points and three rebounds and Castaneda finished with five rebounds, two steals and one assist.

The Wildcats were at Dimmitt on Friday to take on the Bobcats. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a home game against Idalou.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
