Wildcats take down Bobcats on the road, 81-44

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team went on the road and took down the Dimmitt Bobcats on Friday, 81-44, in their first meeting of district play.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 22-3 overall, 5-1 in district play.

Omar Martinez opened the contest with a floater from the left side, but on the other end, Frankie Cortez was fouled on an attempt by MJ Randle. He converted both shots to tie the game, and Kaden Carpio drove the middle for a lay-up to put the Bobcats in front, 4-2, with 6:42 to play in the opening quarter. Jeremiah Trevino grabbed a steal and got it ahead to Martinez for a fast- break lay- up to tie the game, 4-4, and the Wildcats followed it up, as Trevino again hit Martinez in transition for a layup, putting Littlefield back in front, 6-4, with 5:33 to play in the quarter.

Mario Lopez dropped in a layup to tie the game for Dimmitt, but on the other end Martinez was fouled on an attempt by Keenan Hernandez, earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws and followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, pushing their lead to, 10-6, with 4:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Ryan Williams picked up a steal and dished the outlet pass ahead to Martinez for the fastbreak lay-up, as Dimmitt took a time out with 4:29 left to play in the first, trailing the Wildcats, 12- 6. Out of the break, Chip Green hit Martinez on the twoon- one break for a lay-up, but Dimmitt answered, as Carpio dropped in a floater in the lane over Green, trimming the lead to, 14-8, with 2:44 to play in the quarter.

Jayden Barrio drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Kam McCarty and with time winding down in the quarter, Ja’Den Williams dropped in a floater in the lane, drawing an and-one foul on the play. He converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 208. On the other end, Enrique Holguin was fouled on an attempt by Sir Pratt. He made oneof- two shots from the line to make the score, 20-9. Lopez beat the buzzer with a put-back off of a miss by Daegan Robertson, making the score, 20-11, as the first quarter came to a close.

Ja’Den Williams opened the second quarter with a put-back off of a miss by Martinez, but on the other end, Carpio was fouled on an attempt by Pratt, earning a trip to the line. He made oneof- two shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 20-12. With 6:01 remaining in the first half, Martinez dropped in a fast-break lay-up off of the outlet pass from Barrio, as Dimmitt took another time out with 5:55 to play in the half, trailing the Wildcats, 24-12.

Out of the break, Barrio picked up a steal and drained a short fade-away in the lane, pushing their lead to, 26-12. Ryan Williams hit Green with a no-look pass for a lay-up and Green followed it up with a three from the top of the key, making the score, 31-12, with 3:42 to play in the half. Littlefield kept the offense going, as Ja’Den Williams dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Ryan Williams, making the score, 33-12.

With just over three minutes to play in the first half, Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams, drawing and- one foul on Holguin. He missed the free throw leaving the scrore, 35-12. Green took a charge on Carpio, and he followed it up on the offensive end with a three from the top of the key off of an assist from Ryan Williams, stretching the lead to, 38-12.

Hernandez knocked down a jumper in the lane to stop the bleeding for Dimmitt, but Green fired right back with a three from the top of the key and Martinez followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Josiah Garcia, extending the lead to, 43-14,with under a minute to play in the half. With time winding down in the half, Martinez picked up a steal in their own end and got it to Ryan Williams for a lay-up, as Littlefield took a, 45-15, lead into the locker room at halftime.

Ryan Williams was fouled on an attempt by Lopez to open the second half; he split the free throws, making the score, 45-15. Hernandez dropped in a lay-up for the Bobcats, but on the next play, Randle took a charge on Cortez and Ryan Williams followed it up on the offensive end with a floater on the left baseline off of the assist from Randle, making the score, 47-17, with 6:03 to play in the third quarter.

Lopez and Cortez dropped in back- to- back lay- ups for Dimmitt, but Littlefield answered with a three to stretch their lead to, 50-21, with under five minutes to go in the third. Lopez dropped in another lay-up for the Bobcats, and Cortez was fouled on the next play by McCarty, earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws and followed it up with a three from the right elbow, as Dimmitt took a time out with 3:08 to play in the quarter.

Out of the break, Barrio drove to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Isiah Sifuentez. He converted the free throw to stretch the lead back out to, 53-27. McCarty drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams and Barrio followed it up with a floater in the lane, extending their lead to, 58-27, with under two mintues to play in the third quarter.

Carpio knocked down a three for Dimmitt, but Pratt responded with a lay-up and McCarty followed it up with a drive on the left baseline for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Cortez. He converted the free throw to make the score, 63-30, going into the final quarter of play.

Martinez opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Ryan Williams, but Lopez and Carpio dropped in back-to-back put-backs to trim the lead to, 65- 34. Randle drained a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Martinez and Martinez banked in a floater in the lane, stretching their lead to, 70-34. Carpio answered with a lay-up, as the Bobcats took a time out with 4:48 to play, trailing the Wildcats, 7036.

Out of the break, Blas Cadena dropped in a lay-up for the Bobcats, but Martinez answered with a lay-up in transition and Green followed it up with a three from the right wing, pushing their lead to, 77-38. Tony Salazar dropped in a lay-up for Dimmitt, but Garcia responded with a jumper off the glass from the right wing, making the score, 7940. With under two minutes to play, Cortez dropped in a lay-up over McCarty, but the Wildcats responded again, as Garcia dropped in a put-back off of a miss by McCarty, making the score, 81- 42. The Bobcats dropped in a lay-up to close out the game, as Littlefield took their first meeting with Dimmitt, 8144.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Martinez, who tallied 18 points, to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Green joined him in double-figures scoring with 14 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block, while Barrio contributed 10 points, three steals, two assists and one rebound.

Ryan Williams tallied seven points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds, while Ja’Den Williams chipped in seven points, five rebounds and two assists, and McCarty added six points, two rebounds, two assists and one block. Garcia contributed four points and two assists, while Trevino chipped in four points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Randle added three points and three steals, while Pratt finished with two points and five rebounds.

The Wildcats hosted Brownfield on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play next Tuesday with a road game against Lamesa.
