Wildcats slay Cubs, 42-21

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team went on the road Friday night and came back with a, 42-21, victory over Brownfield to stay unbeaten on the season.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-0 overall on the year.

The Wildcats jumped in front early, as Ben Castillo rushed for a two-yard score and Daniel Rojas followed it up later in the quarter with a four-yard touchdown run to put them in front, 14-0. The Cubs would fire back with a pair of 13-yard passing touchdowns through the air to close out the opening quarter with the score tied, 14-14.

Sammy Saenz rushed for a 32-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, making the score, 21-14, going into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Wildcats began to pull away, as Jonas Camacho rushed four a four-yard score and Blayton Soliz followed it up with a four-yard touchdown run, making the score, 35-14, going into the final quarter of play.

Brownfield opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 36-yard touchdown strike through the air, but Rojas would close out the game with a, 12-yard touchdown run, as Littlefield took the contest, 42-21.

Offensively, Saenz finished the game 6-17 passing for 51 yards and two interceptions. He also added 22 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Soliz tallied 21 carries for 124 yards and one touchdown, while Rojas chipped in 11 carries for 62 yards and two scores and Camacho added eight carries for 50 yards and one score. Castillo contributed one carry for two yards and a touchdown.

In the receiving game, Gabe Mata tallied three catches for 23 yards, while Jayden Barrio added two catches for 22 yards.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Ivan Hernandez, who finished with eight total tackles, four solo tackles and one for loss. He also had a fumble recovery. Mata tallied seven tackles, six solo and also hauled in an interception, while Barrio chipped in four tackles, three solo, and an interception.

AJ Cantu, Jacob Silvas, Soliz and Camacho, each accounted for six tackles in the contest. Cantu also had a forced fumble and JJ Gonzales recovered a fumble.

The Wildcats close out the pre-district schedule at home this Friday for their Homecoming bout with Coahoma.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
