The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team picked up a big win on the road over the Brownfield Cubs, 72-54, in their push for a play-off spot.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 10-16 overall, 4-5 in district play.
Jaron Cabello took a charge on Jojo Carrillo to open the contest and Chip Green followed it up with a three from the left wing, off of the assist form Omar Martinez to get the Wildcats on the board, with just over one minute gone in the opening quarter. Q Busby an swered with a three of his own from the left elbow to get the Cubs on the board, but on the other end, Tyrell Norman hit a cutting Cabello for a lay-up to put the Wildcats back in front, 5-3.
Malik Mason dropped in a putback to tie the game for the Cubs, but on the other end, Norman was fouled on an attempt by Carrillo. He converted both attempts at the line and Green followed it up with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Jordan Trevino to push their lead to, 10-5, with just under four minutes left to play in the first quarter.
Devin Hines drained a three from the left wing for Brownfield, but Ty’Jae Chambers answered with a lay-up on the other end off of the assist from Martinez, drawing an and-one foul on Busby. The free throw was no good, but Cabello was there for the put-back to make the score, 17-11, with two minutes remaining in the quarter.
Cabello knocked down a jumper from the left elbow, off of an assist from Green and on their next possession, Elijah Salazar drove the lane, kicking the ball out to Green on the left wing, who buried the three to make the score, 22-11. Hines, though would knock down a three from the left elbow to cut into the lead for Brownfield, trimming the Wildcat lead to, 22-14, as the first quarter came to a close.
Cabello knocked down a three from the right elbow to open the second quarter and Norman tossed an outlet pass out in front to Jordan Trevino on the next play, who sent the touch pass to Cabello, who gave it right back to Jordan Trevino for the lay-up on the break, making the score, 27-14. Green knocked down a jumper in the lane, as Brownfield took a time out with 6:08 remaining in the first half to talk things over. Out of the break, Littlefield’s defense forced a five-second call on the inbound play.
Martinez took a charge on Hines, but Mason go the Cubs on the board in the second quarter with a put-back, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:16 remaining in the half. Out of the break, MJ Randle took a charge and Green followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Randle and on the next play, Jeremiah Trevino hit Jordan Trevino with the outlet pass for a short jumper on the right side to push their lead to, 34-16, with 2:29 remaining in the half.
The Cubs would not lie down, as Hines knocked down a three from the left wing and then fol lowed it up with a steal from Randle, taking it the other way for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Randle. He converted the free throw to finish off the three-point play, cutting the lead to, 34-22, with 1:50 remaining in the half. Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a lay-up, but with time winding down in the half, Brandon Anthony scored a layup in transition to make the score, 36-24, going into the locker room at halftime.
Brownfield opened the second half on a, 6-0, scoring run to cut the lead to single digits, but Jordan Trevino scored a put-back off of a miss by Cabello and followed it up with a dish to Chambers for a lay-up to stretch their lead back out to, 40-30, with 5:21 left to play in the quarter. Carrillo was fouled on an attempt by Green and split the free throws, but Green answered on the other end, as he knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to make the score, 42-31.
With just over four minutes remaining in the third, Jordan Trevino tipped in a miss by Green and Cabello followed it up with a jumper from the left wing, drawing an and-one foul on Anthony. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 46-31, with 3:26 remaining in the third. Busby split a pair of free throws for the Cubs and Mason scored a put-back off of a miss by Busby, as the Cubs took a time out with 2:20 remaining in the in the quarter and the Wildcats leading, 46-34.
Out of the break, Green converted a pair of free throws, but Busby answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Juan Najera, cutting the lead to 12 points, 48-36. Jordan Trevino knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, off of the assist from Salazar, but with under one minute to go in the third, Hines dropped in a floater from the left side to make the score, 50-38, going into the final quarter of play.
Chambers was fouled on a put back attempt by Mason to open the fourth quarter; he converted both free throws and Jordan Trevino followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow, off of the assist from Martinez, making the score, 54-38. Chambers scored a lay-up off of an assist from Green, but Mason answered for the Cubs with back-to-back buckets, before Brownfield took a time out with 5:07 left to play in the game and Littlefield leading, 56-42.
Out of the break, Green drained a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Cabello and on the next play, Martinez hit Green on the two-on-one break for a lay-up, as he drew an and-one foul on Carrillo. He converted the free throw to extend their lead to, 62-42. With just over four minutes remaining, Norman dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play. He missed the free throw leaving the score, 64-42.
Joey Martinez knocked down back-to-back threes for the Cubs, but after a Littlefield time out, Jordan Trevino picked up a steal and took it to the hoop for a quick layup, making the score, 66-48, with just over three minutes remaining in the game. The Wildcats took a time out and out of the break, Jordan Trevino was fouled on the floor by Carrillo and sank both free throws to push the lead to, 68-48.
With 2:22 remaining, Mason dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Norman. He converted the free throw, but the Wildcats answered as Green passed the ball to Norman, who hit a cutting Jordan Trevino on the fastbreak for a lay-up, stretching the lead to, 70-51. Green hit Cabello for a lay-up, and with time winding down, Joey Martinez knocked down a three for the Cubs, but the Wildcats went on to take the contest, 72-54.
Green led the team in scoring with 27 points, while he was joined in double-figures scoring by Jordan Trevino tallied 18 points and Cabello chipped in 13 points.
Chambers chipped in eight points, while Norman added four points and Jeremiah Trevino finished with two points.
The Wildcats hosted Muleshoe on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday with a big game at Lamesa.
