Wildcats hold off Eagles, 62-50

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team swept the season series with the Roosevelt Eagles on Wednesday night, picking up a home victory, 6250.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 16-10 overall, 63 in district play.

Kolbi Mireles opened the contest with a lay-up for Roosevelt, but on the other end, Sammy Saenz found Nate Castaneda down low for a lay-up, and Jayden Barrio followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Elijah Rodriguez, making the score, 5-2, with 5:50 to play in the opening quarter.

Hatchett dropped in a reverse lay-up for the Eagles, but the Wildcats responded, as Saenz bounced a pass to Castaneda down low for a lay-up, making the score, 74, with just under five minutes to play in the quarter. With 4:36 remaining in the quarter, Mireles was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda, earning a trip to the line. She split the shots at the line, making the score, 7-5.

Saenz got the ball inside to Castaneda for a lay-up, but Roosevelt answered on the other end, as Harris dropped in a lay-up, off of an assist from Hatchett, making the score, 9-7, as Roosevelt took a time out with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter. Out of the break, Barrio drained a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Castaneda, pushing their lead out to, 12-7.

With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Mireles picked up a steal and scored on the fastbreak, but Barrio answered with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Jose Payan to close out the first quarter with Littlefield in front, 15-9.

Saenz opened the second frame with a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Barrio, but Mireles responded with a fast-break lay-up off of a steal, making the score, 18-11. Saenz hit Castaneda down low for a lay-up, but Bradshaw responded with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Harris, cutting the lead to, 20-14, with just over five minutes left to play in the half.

Rodriguez dropped in a third-chance bucket off of his own miss and Barrio banked a floater off of the glass from the left side, pushing their lead back out to, 24-14.

With 3:37 to play in the half, Barrio pulled up for a jumper from the left wing, as Roosevelt took a time out with 3:34 to play in the half. Out of the break, Harris dropped in a lay-up, and Zuniga drained a three from the left elbow, off of an assist from Mireles, cutting the lead to, 26-19.

Blayton Soliz picked up a steal, taking it all the way down court for a fast-break lay-up, however, the Eagles would come right back down the floor, as Zuniga drained another three from the left wing to make it a six-point game, 28-22, going into the locker room at halftime.

Rodriguez dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Barrio to open the second half, and on the next play, Davis hit Rodriguez down low for a lay-up to push their lead back out to double digits, 32- 22. Zuniga dropped in a finger-roll in the lane, and Bradshaw followed it up with a lay-up, cutting the lead to, 32-26, with 5:53 to play in the third quarter.

Davis knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, but on the other end, Harris was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda, his second of the game. Harris made oneof- two shots at the line, making the score, 34-27. With just under five minutes to play in the third, Barrio picked up a steal from Mireles under their own basket and dropped in the lay-up to push their lead back out to, 36-27.

Zuniga drained a three from the right elbow to make it a six-point game, 36-30, as the Eagles took a time out with 4:32 to play in the third quarter, Out of the break, Barrio dropped in a floater in the lane, but on the other end, Mireles was fouled on an attempt by Barrio, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-oftwo shots at the line, but Davis responded with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Rodriguez, making the score, 41-31.

Hatchett drove the left side for a lay-up for the Eagles and Mireles followed it up with another lay-up from the left side, making the score, 41-35, with 2:27 to play in the quarter. Jackson picked up a steal, dishing it to Mireles for a fastbreak lay-up to cut the lead to four points, 41-37, as Littlefield took a time out with 1:36 to play in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Soliz banked in a jumper in the lane, off of the assist from Payan, but on the other end, Bradshaw was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda, his third. He made one-of-two shots from the line, stretching their lead to, 43-38. With time winding down in the third, Rodriguez dropped in a put-back off of his own miss, drawing an and-one foul on Jackson. He converted the free throw to make the score, 46-38, going into the final quarter of play.

Barrio knocked down a step-back jumper from the right wing, off of the assist from Saenz to open the fourth quarter, but Mireles answered with a steal for Roosevelt, scoring on a fastbreak to make the score, 4840. Saenz with coast-tocoast for a fast-break layup, and Barrio followed it uo with a lay-up off of a steal in their own end to push the lead back out to, 52-40, with 6:24 tom play in the game.

With 5: 40 remaining, Saenz was fouled on a fastbreak attempt by Harris. He converted both shots at the line, making the score, 5440. Two plays later, Zuniga and Hatchett drained backto- bak threes for the Eagles, as Roosevelt took a time out with 3:48 to play and the lead cut to, 54-46. Out of the break, Barrio was fouled on an attempt by Bradshaw. He converted both shots at the line to push their lead to, 56-46.

Bradshaw dropped in a lay-up over Castaneda, but Barrio answered with a floater from the left side, as the Wildcats took a, 58-48, lead. They took a time out with 2:24 to play, and out of the break, Davis dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 60-48. With under a minute to play, Saenz was fouled on the floor by Mireles, earning a trip to the line. He converted both shots and with time winding down, Ordonzz sank a pair of free throws, as Littlefield took down the Eagles, 62-50.

Barrio led the way for the Wildcats with 25 points, while Saenz and Rodriguez each contributed nine points and Castaneda chipped in eight points. Davis added seven points and Soliz finished with four points in the contest.

The Wildcats were at Slaton on Friday for their second meeting with the Tigers. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Friona.
