The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team fell to the Shallowater Mustangs on Friday in Littlefield, 82-57.
With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 8-6 overall, 0-2 in district play.
Chip Green scored a lay-up off of a steal to open the contest for Littlefield, but on the other end, Hudson Franklin was fouled on an attempt by Ryan Williams. He made one-of-two shots from the line, and Kam McCarty responded with a lay-up on the left side to stretch the Wildcat’s lead to, 4-1.
With 5:48 to play in the opening- quarter, McCarty was fouled on an attempt by Gavin Coleman. He made one-of-two shots from the line and followed it up with a floater in the lane to stretch the lead to, 7-1. On the other end, Coleman was fouled on an attempt by McCarty and converted both shots to trim the lead to, 7-3.
With 4:43 to play in the first quarter, Franklin was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda and split the attempts at the line to make it a three-point game, 7-4. Franklin followed it up with a lay-up on the right side, but Jayden Barrio answered with a euro-step to get into the lane for a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 9-6. Logan Winn tied the game with a three from the top of the key, and Franklin was fouled on the floor by Castaneda, his second, earning a trip to the line. He converted both shots at the line to give Shallowater their first lead of the game, 9-11.
Coleman knocked down a leaner in the lane and Cruz Dickson was fouled on the floor by Ben Castillo, earning a trip to the line. He sank both shots, pushing the Mustang lead to, 15-9, with 1:39 to play in the quarter. Jose Payan buried a three from the right wing off of an assist from Williams, but Mikah Blackshear dropped in a fast-break lay-up off of a turnover by Barrio and he followed it up with a steal, dishing it ahead to Cooper Martin, who was fouled on an attempt by Payan. He sank both shots at the line to make the score, 19-12.
Williams would drive the middle for a lay-up to close out the first quarter with the Mustangs in front, 19-14.
Green knocked dowm a jumper from the top of the key off of an assist from Williams to open the second quarter, but Franklin knocked down a short jumper from the left side and Martin drove the left side for a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 23-16. Franklin kept it going with a three from the top of the key, but on the other end, Green was fouled on a three-point attempt by Blackshear. He made two-of-three shots from the line to trim the lead to, 26-18, with 4:29 left to play in the first half.
Coleman dropped in a lay-up off of a turnover by Williams, drawing an and-one foul on Barrio, his third. Coleman missed the free throw leaving the score, 28-18. Franklin dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Eizeah Coleman; he sank the free throw, pushing the lead to, 31-18, with just over four minutes to play in the half.
Franklin would score a lay-up in transition, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over with 3:23 to play in the half. Out of the break, Green drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Castaneda, but on the other end, Franklin picked up a turnover by Williams and was fouled on the shot attempt by McCarty, his second. Franklin converted both shots at the line and Coleman followed it up with a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 37-21.
Castaneda drove the right side for a lay-up, but Dickson knocked down a jumper from the left elbow and Alex Rodriguez drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Coleman for a lay-up, extending the lead to, 41-23. In the closing second of the half, Williams knocked down a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Castaneda, trimming the lead to, 41-26, going into the locker room at halftime.
Shallowater opened the second half on a, 7-0, scoring run, as Littlefield took a time out with 6:48 to play in the third quarter. Out of the break, McCarty dropped in a put- back off of a miss by Castaneda, drawing an and-one foul on Browy Rowin. The free throw was good, trimming the lead to, 51-29, with 5:18 to play in the quarter.
Winn buried athree from the left elbow for the Mustangs, but Williams answered on the other end with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Winn, his second. He missed the free throw leaving the score, 51-31. Coleman dropped in a lay- up in tranisiton for Shallowater, but Green responded on the other end with a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Rowin, his second. Green missed the free throw leaving the score, 53-33.
Winn drove to the basket for a lay-up, but Green dropped in backto- back lay-ups to make the score, 55-37, as Shallowater took a time out to talk things over with 3:56 to play in the third quarter. Out of the break, Williams was fouled on a put-back attempt by Winn, his third. He converted both free throws to make the score, 55-39.
Dickson dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Martin, but Green answered with a three from the top of the key off of an assist from Williams, making the score, 57-42, with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter. Shallowater would go on to close out the third quarter on a, 7-2, scoring run, making the score, 64-44, going into the final quarter of play.
Green opened the fourth quarter with a three from the right elbow, but Winn answered with a three from the right wing on the other end to make the score, 6747. Barrio was fouled on an attempt by Martin and made one-of-two shots from the line to trim the lead to, 67-48. Winn drove the middle for a lay-up, but on the other end, Barrio dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Williams, making the score, 69-50, with just over six minutes remaining.
A block by McCarty on defense led to Castaneda getting fouled on an attempt by Martin, his third. Castaneda converted one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 69-51. Rowin dropped in a put-back off of his own miss for Shallowater and Coleman split a pair of free throws, as McCarty picked up his fourth foul of the game. McCarty would answer on the other end with a lay-up on the left side, making the score, 72-53, with 4:50 to play in the contest.
Rowin dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Franklin, and Martin dished the outlet pass down court to Coleman for a transition basket, pushing the lead to, 76-53. With 3:21 left to play, Franklin was fouled on an attempt by Castaneda, his third; he converted both shots from the line, making the score, 78-53.
Williams knocked down a short jumper from the right side, but Shallowater answered with a bucket in transition to make the score, 80-55, with just over two minutes to play. Barrio was fouled on a jumper attempt by Champ Clanahan and converted both free throws, but the Mustangs would drop in a lay-up to close out the contest, 82-57.
The Wildcats were led by Green, who tallied 21 points, five rebounds and two steals, while McCarty chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and two steals, and Williams finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Barrio contributed seven points and one steal, while Castaneda added three points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, and Payan finished with three points in the contest.
