WILDCATS BLAST WHIRLWINDS, 79-63

The Littlefield Wildcats finished out the Summer Shootout Tournament on Friday undefeated, as they took down Floydada, 79-63.

Floydada opened the contest on an, 8-0, scoring run before Elijah Salazar dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 8-2, with 18:18 remaining in the opening half.

Jayson Cooper dropped in a layup for the Whirlwinds, but Jeremiah Trevino answered with a lay-up and the and-one to cut the lead to, 10-5. Braun Hobbs scored on a reverse layup, but Ja’Den Williams answered with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Ryan Williams, trimming the lead to, 12-8, with 17:14 left to play in the half.

Brett Brittain dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Abran Castillo, but Trevino answered on the other end for Littlefield with a put-back off of a miss by Ja’Den Williams, making the score, 16-8. Littlefield would battle back and a lay-up by McCarty would make it a one-possession game, 16-14, with 15:29 left to play in the half. Salazar buried a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Omar Martinez to give Littlefield their first lead of the game, and McCarty followed it up with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on the play to extend their lead to, 20-16.

Castillo buried a three from the right elbow for Floydada and went coast-to-coast for a lay-up on their next possession to regain the lead for the Whirlwinds, 21-20, with 13:19 remaining in the half. Major McNeese knocked down a jump-hook in the lane, but on the other end, Sergio Valdez was fouled on an attempt by MJ Randle. He converted the free throw, making the score, 23-22. Hobbs dropped in a runner in transition, but Chip Green responded with a jumper in the lane and Trevino followed it up with a lay-up and the and-one to regain the lead for the Wildcats, 27-25. Littlefield took a time out with 8:18 remaining in the first half, and out of the break, Omar Martinez, heaved an outlet pass down court to Ryan Williams, who finished off the fast-break with a lay-up to extend their lead to, 29-25. With under eight minutes to play in the first half, Hobbs was fouled on an attempt by Salazar and converted the free throw to make it a onepossession game, 29-27, but McNeese answered on the other end with a lay-up, off of the assist from Ian Mendez and Salazar followed it up with a free throw to push their lead to, 33-27, with under six minutes remaining in the half.

The teams would score 13 points apiece over the final five minutes, as Littlefield took a, 46-39, lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hobbs drained a three from the right corner off of the assist from Castillo to open the second half and he followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Brittain to make it a one-possession Wildcat lead, 46-44. Valdez dished a pass across the lane to Brittain for a lay-up to tie the game, 46-46, but it was short-lived, as Trevino was fouled on the other end and converted the free throw to make the score, 48-46.

Cooper answered with a three from the left elbow to put Floydada in front, 49-48, but after a missed free throw by Cooper, Martinez dropped in a lay-up for Littlefield, off of the assist from McCarty, putting the Wildcats back in front, 50-49, with 14:20 left to play in the game. Green converted a free throw, but Valdez answered with a midrange jumper from the right baseline to cut the lead to one point, 52-51.

Salazar and Green sank back-to-back threes off of assists from Martinez and McCarty and Salazar dropped in a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 60-51, with 10:46 left to play in the contest. McNeese was fouled on an attempt and converted the free throw and Ryan Williams kept the scoring run going with an outlet pass to Mendez, who finished off the play with a lay-up to make the score, 64-51.

Floydada took a time out with 9:44 remaining and out of the break, Ryan Williams dropped in a lay-up and picked up the and-one foul on the play, making the score, 67-51. Castillo dropped in a floater from the left elbow, but the Wildcats wasted no time responding, as Ryan Williams got the ball ahead to Trevino, who finished the play with a lay-up to make the score, 69-53, with 7:25 remaining.

Valdez was fouled on a put-back try off of his own miss, earning a trip to the line. He converted the free throw to cut the lead to, 69-55, and on the next play, Castillo picked up a steal and threw the outlet pass out in front to Hobbs on the fast-break, who finished off the play with a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 69-57. Green knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line, off of the assist from Salazar and Salazar followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by McNeese, pushing their lead to, 73-57.

With 2:22 remaining, McNeese scored a lay-up off of a steal, but Hobbs was fouled and converted the free throw to make the score, 75-59. Green delivered a pass through traffic to a cutting Salazar, who finished at the hoop with a lay-up, but Hobbs responded by dropped in a lay-up on the other end for Floydada to make the score, 77-61. In the closing seconds of the game, Martinez scored a lay-up off of an assist from McCarty and Hobbs knocked down a free throw for Floydada, as the Wildcats got the best of the Whirlwinds, 79-63.
