The Sudan Hornet’s varsity football team picked up their first win of the season at home on Friday when they edged out the Tahoka Bulldogs, 18-14.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 1-1 on the season.
The Hornets tallied 326 yards of offense, including 185 passing yards and 141 rushing yards.
Marcello King got the Hornets on the board in the opening quarter with a nine-yard rushing touchdown, followed by the PAT from Caleb Groetken, making the score, 7-0.
King would add another rushing touchdown in the second quarter, when he scored from 21yards out. The PAT by Groetken was no good, leaving the score, 13-0, going into the locker room at halftime.
Groetken nailed a 34-yard field goal to extend the lead to, 16-0, but the Bulldogs answered later in the quarter with a one-yard touchdown run, followed by the two-point conversion to cut the lead to, 16-8, heading into the final quarter of play.
In the final frame, Tahoka returned a punt 90-yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs went for the two-point conversion but failed, leaving the Hornets in front, 1614. Sudan would record a safety to ice the game, 18-14.
Offensively, Trent Wilson finished the game 14-22 passing for 185 yards. He also added 17 carries and 25 yards on the ground.
King led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
In the receiving game, Juarez hauled in seven catches for 81 yards, while Groetken chipped in one catch for 44 yards, and Braxton Harrell contributed three catches for 39 yards.
Defensively, Jaden Conley finished the game with 13 total tackles, while Matthew Lopez tallied nine total tackles, four for loss and three sacks. Sal Juarez tallied 11 total tackles and Groetken chipped in five total tackles.
The Hornets also hauled in one interception on the night.
The Hornets will be on the road on Friday as they travel to Ropes to take on the Eagles.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
