Olton mustangs blast smyer in summer basketball action

The Olton Mustang’s varsity basketball team cruised past the Smyer Bobcats in summer basketball action last Friday at New Home, as they took the contest, 60- 15.

Smyer opened the contest with a put- back, but Nate Urbina answered with a steal and knocked down a short jumper from the left side to tie the game, 2- 2, with 14: 57 to play in the first half. Raymond Ramirez dropped in a lay-up in transition off of an assist from Sebastian Sparkman and a save on the sideline by Jimmy Munoz ended up the hands of Urbina for a quick lay- up to extend their lead to, 6- 2.

Sparkman picked up a steal and got it ahead to Urbina for a quick lay- up, but Smyer answered with a put- back to end the scoring drought, making the score, 8- 4, with 11: 37 to play in the first half. Smyer scored again on a put- back, but Alan Vasquez answered with a runner from the left side and the Mustangs followed it up with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Ramirez, pushing their lead back out to, 13- 6.

Ramirez dropped in a putback for Olton, forcing Smyer to take a time out with 7:23 remaining in the first half. Out of the break, Ramirez buried a three from the right elbow to stretch their lead to, 18- 6. The Bobcats drew a shooting foul on the other end and converted the free throw to cut the lead to, 18- 8, and they converted an and-one opportunity on their next possession to trim the lead to, 18- 11, with just over three minutes to play in the half.

But, Olton would answer as Munoz drained a three from the right wing and they followed it up with a put-back to extend the lead back out to, 23- 11, with 1: 21 to play in the half. Munoz picked up a steal and got it ahead to Urbina, who was fouled on a shot attempt earning a trip to the line. He converted the free throw to make the score, 25- 11, going into halftime.

Sparkman opened the second half with a floater from the left elbow and Urbina followed it up with a fast- break lay- up off of a steal in the mid- court, pushing their lead to, 29- 11, with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half. Vasquez dropped in a lay- up in transition and Ramirez followed it up with an assist to Urbina for a lay- up in transition, making the score, 33- 11. The offensive barrage from Olton continued, as Vasquez drained a three from the right elbow, making the score, 36-11, as Smyer took a time out with 13 minutes to play in the game.

Out of the break, Sparkman dropped in a put- back off of a miss by Urbina, drawing an and- one foul on the play. He converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 39- 11. Munoz followed it up with a dish down low to Urbina for a lay- up and on the defensive end, a block by Munoz ended up in the hands of Sparkman, who got it ahead to Urbina for the quick lay- up, stretching their lead to, 43-11, with 11:21 to play in the game.

AJ Reyna knocked down a pull- up jumper from the freethrow line, but Smyer answered with a runner from the left side to trim the lead to, 4513, with under 10 minutes to play in the game. Munoz buried a three from the right elbow and the Mustangs knocked down another three from the right wing, making the score, 51- 13, with 7: 37 left to play.

The Mustangs went coastto- coast for a lay- up, but on the other end, Smyer was fouled on an attempt and converted the free throw to make the score, 53-15, with 3:32 remaining in the contest. Sparkman saved a ball to Urbina for a lay- up and Vasquez followed it up with a put- back off of a missed dunk by Urbina, pushing the lead to, 57-15. Ramirez drained a deep three from the right elbow to make the score, 60-15, as time expired.
