The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team celebrated Homecoming on Friday with a, 56-26, thumping of the Bovina Mustangs to stay unbeaten on the year.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 4-0 overall on the season.
The Mustangs were clicking on all cylinders on Friday night, as Damian Marquez got Olton on the board with a two-yard touchdown run. The PAT by Logan Lassiter was good, putting them in front, 7-0. Lassiter would tack on a fouryard touchdown run and followed it up with the PAT to push their lead to, 14-0, and Baldo Garcia closed out the opening quarter with a six-yard touchdown run to make the score, 21-0, after the PAT by Lassiter.
Bovina would strike back in the second quarter, as they scored on a four-yard touchdown run to trim the lead to, 21-8, after the twopoint conversion. However, Garcia would find the end zone for his second score of the night on a 17yard run, but the PAT was no good by Lassiter, leaving the score, 278. The Mustangs would take to the air to close out the first half, as Lassiter connected with Joel Olivas Jr., for a 26-yard touchdown strike. They missed on the twopoint conversion, making the score, 33-8, going into the locker room at halftime.
Garcia got the Mustangs going in the second half with a 33-yard touchdown run, but Bovina fired right back, scoring on a, 16-yard touchdown run to make the score, 39-14. Lassiter would connect with Olivas Jr., for a 39-yard touchdown pass and he nailed the PAT, extending their lead back out to, 4614. Bovina would not lay down, as they closed out the third quarter with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to make the score, 46-20, going into the final quarter of play.
Bovina opened the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run, but missed on the two-point conversion, making the score, 4626. However, Lassiter would find Jake Soliz for an eight-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to, 5326, after the PAT. Lassiter would close out the game with a 20-yard field goal, as the Mustangs went on to take their Homecoming game over Bovina, 56-26.
Lassiter finished the game 2028 passing for 309 yards and three touchdowns. He also added seven carries for 20 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Garcia led the rushing attack for the Mustangs with 17 carries for 152 yards and three scores, while Jason Granillo tallied eight carries for 23 yards and Damian Marquez finished with two carries for four yards and one touchdown.
In the receiving game, Olivas Jr. led the team with seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while Eric Valencia chipped in four catches for 79 yards and Brennon Huguley tallied five catches for 76 yards. Soliz finished with three catches for 15 yards and one touchdown.
The Mustangs are open this week and will close out the predistrict schedule on the road next Friday in Vega to take on the Longhorns.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
