Nettes take down Anton on the road, 63-15

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team cruised to victory over the Anton Lady Dawgs, 6315, last Saturday in Anton.

With the win, the Nettes improve to 3-0 overall on the season, while the Lady Dawgs fall to 0-3 overall on the season.

Kaileigh Greenwalt dropped in a lay-up in transition for the Nettes to open the contest and with 5:46 to play in the opening quarter, Addison Cornelius dropped in a put-back off of the miss by Edette Herrera, making the score, 4-0, in favor of the Nettes. Melo Rodriguez picked up a steal and took it the other way for a quick lay-up, but on the other end, Sarah Carlisle was fouled on an attempt by Greenwalt, earning a trip to the line. She split the free-throw attempts, trimming the lead to, 61.

With just under four minutes left to play in the first quarter, Rodrigeuz tossed the outlet pass down court to Herrera, who finsihed the play with a lay-up to extend their lead to, 8-1. Sudan kept up the offensive attack, as Lexi Jennings buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Herrera, pushing their lead to, 111.

Herrera followed it up with another steal, taking it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, but on the other end of the floor, Bridget Thomas was fouled on the floor by Herrera earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to cut the score to, 13-3. The score would stand as the first quarter came to a close.

Herrera opened the second frame with a put-back off of her own miss for Sudan and she followed it up with a runner from the right side to stretch their lead to, 17-3. Blessy Montes drained a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Rodriguez and on their next possession, Herrera was fouled on the fast- break by Hoover, earning a trip to the line. She sank both shots to push their lead to, 22-3, with 4:26 to play in the first half.

Haylee Toscano knocked down a jumper from the left elbow and on the following possession, Herrera was fouled on an attempt by Isabela Juarez. Herrera split the attempts at the line, extending the lead to, 25-3. Anton took a time out with 2:37 to play in the half, and out of the break, Sudan forced a 10-second call on the Lady Dawgs for a turnover.

With under two minutes to play in the first half, Toscano knocked down a jumper from the right elbow and Rodriguez followed it up with a lay-up in transition to push their lead to, 29-3. With time winding down in the half, Emry Humphreys picked up a steal and got it ahead to Arianna Sanchez, who dropped it in for a lay-up to close out the first half with the Nettes in control, 31-3.

Montes opened the second half with a three from the left wing off of the assist from Herrera and she followed it up with a fast-break layup off of a steal, extending the lead to, 36-3, with just over seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Rodriguez scored a lay-up off of an Anton turnover and Corneliues followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Herrera, making the score, 40-3, with 5:36 to play in the quarter.

Sanchez scored a fast-break layup off of the outlet pass from Toscano and Greenwalt followed it up with a lay-up in transition, forcing Anton to call a time out with 4:14 to play in the quarter, trailing the Nettes, 44-3. Out of the break, Herrera dropped in a transition lay-up off of the asssit from Rodriguez and Montes followed it up with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Herrera, pushing their lead to, 49-3, with 1:48 to play in the quarter.

Cornelius dropped in a lay-up for Sudan and with under a minute to play, Anton called another time out to prevent a turnover. Out of the break, Mariah Miller was fouled on an attempt by Humphreys, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 51-4, as the third quarter came to a close.

Juarez knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to open the fourth quarter, but Greenwalt responded with a lay-up for Sudan to make the score, 53-6. Anton fired right back, as Carlisle knocked down a jumper in the lane to cut the lead to, 53-8, and Miliana Castillo followed it up with a layup to trim the lead to, 53-10, with 5:44 left to play.

Herrera was fouled on an attempt by Castillo and split the free throws and on their next possession Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Hoover. She too split the free throws, pushing their lead to, 55-10. Montes picked up a steal and pushed the ball ahead to Rodriguez for the fast-break layup, but Hoover answered with a three from the left wing, making the score, 57-13.

Sudan closed out the game on a, 6-2, scoring run, taking the contest, 63-15.

Herrera led the team in scoring with 14 points, to go along with four steals, three rebounds and three assists, while Montes joined her in double-figures scoring with 11 points, nine steals, two rebounds and one assist. Rodriguez tallied nine points, nine steals, six rebounds and five assists, while Cornelius chipped in six points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Sanchez contributed six points, four rebounds and two assists, while Greenwalt tallied six points, two rebounds and two steals, and Toscano chipped in six points, three assists, two steals and one rebound. Jennings added three points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal and Humphreys finished with two points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Anton was led by Thomas, who finished with six points, five rebounds and two steals. Hoover tallied three points, one rebound and one steal, while Carlisle chipped in three points, one rebound, one steal and one block.

Castillo chipped in two points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block, while Miller added one points and two rebounds, and cooper tallied seven rebounds, three steals and one assist. Juarez finished with three rebounds and one assist.
