The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team improved to 2-0 in district play on Friday with a, 397, victory over the Sundown Roughnecks.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to, 6-1 overall on the season.
The Mustangs totaled 393 yards of offense, including 248 rushing yards and 145 passing yards.
Isaiah Ruiz opened the scoring in the first quarter with a three-yard touchdown run, followed with the PAT from Chris Cabrera to make the score, 7-0.
Ruiz scored again in the second frame on an 11-yard touchdown run, but this time the PAT by Cabrera was no good, leaving the score, 13-0. Sundown would answer with a 28-yard touchdown run, followed with the PAT to cut the lead to, 13-7, but just before halftime, Ruiz would punch in a three- yard score for his third touchdown of the half. The two-point conversion try from Olton was no good, making the score, 19-7, going into the locker room at halftime.
Ruiz broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run for the lone score of the third quarter, but the two-point conversion try from Olton was no good, leaving the score, 25-7, going into the final quarter of play.
Raymond Ramirez got in on the scoring action with a 25-yard touchdown run, which was followed with the PAT from Cabrera to make the score, 32-7. And later in the quarter, Josh Villanueva forced a fumble, which was recovered by Wyatt Nelson and taken the other way for an Olton touchdown. The PAT by Carbera was good, making the score, 397, as Olton won the district contest over Sundown.
Ramirez finished the game eight- of- 16 passing for 145 yards, and added 11 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Ruiz led the rushing attack with 23 carries for 148 yards and four touchdowns.
In the receiving game, Sebastian Sparkman caught one pass for 50 yards, while Jimmy Munoz caught one ball for 41 yards. Nate Urbina caught two passes for 27 yards, while Alan Vasquez caught three passes for 26 yards.
Defensively, Jacob Marquez led the way with 15 total tackles, including two for loss, while Fabian Gutierrez tallied 14 tackles, including one for loss, and Jacob Escobar added 14 tackles, two for loss. Eddie Medrano chipped in 12 tackles, one for loss, while Vasquez contributed seven total tackles and a sack.
Wyatt Nelson added six total tackles, one for loss and a fumble recovery, while Josh Villanueva added two tackles, a sack and a forced fumble and Raymond Ramirez finished with two tackles an an interception.
The Mustangs have a showdown on the road with New Deal on Friday.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Lion’s Stadium.
