The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team won a high-scoring affair over the Tahoka Bulldogs on Friday, 62-48.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in district play.
The Musatngs totaled 432 yards of total offense, including 311 passing yards and 121 rushing yards.
Tahoka struck first in the opening quarter, as Brogan Stone tossed a 29-yard touchdown pass, that was followed by the PAT to put the Bulldogs in front, 7-0. They would followed it up with a one-yard rushing touchdown, but the PAT, this time, was no good, leaving the score, 13-0.
Olton would respond, as Isaiah Ruiz rushed for a nineyard touchdown, but the PAT by Chris Cabrera was no good, trimming the lead to, 13-6. Tahoka would return a kick-off 60 yards for a touchdown, but missed the PAT, making the score, 19-6, as the first quarter came to a close.
Ruiz opened the second frame with a 17-yard rushing touchdown, which was followed by the PAT from Cabrera to cut the lead to, 13-19. Stone threw a 32 yard touchdown pass and the Bulldogs followed it up with a 50 yard touchdown run, both followed with a two-point conversions to push their lead to, 35-13, going into the locker room at halftime.
Alan Vasquez opened the third quarter with a 34-yard pass-ing touchdown to Eddie Ramirez, but they missed on the two-point conversion try, making the score, 35-19. Later in the third, Jimmy Munoz caught a 15yard passing touchdown from Raymond Ramirez, but again, the Mustangs failed on the twopoint conversion, cutting the lead to, 35-21.
Stone would answer for Tahoka, throwing his third touchdown of the game, this time for a 62-yard score. The Bulldogs would miss on the twopoint conversion try, making the score, 41-25. Olton fired right back, as Vasquez caught an 18yard touchdown pass from Raymond Ramirez to cut the lead to 10 points, 41-31, after the failed two-point conversion try.
Baldo Garcia punched in a one- yard touchdown run and Ruiz followed it up with a twopoint conversion run to to cut the lead to, 41- 39, and Ruiz closed out the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown run and he score on the two-point conversion to Olton in front, 47-41, going into the final quarter of play.
Stone opened the fourth quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass for Tahoka and the PAT was good, putting the Bulldogs back in front, 48-47. Olton would not be denied, as Adolfo Garcia rushed for a three-yard touchdown and Ruiz followed it up with the two-point conversion run to regain the lead for the Mustangs, 55-48. Later in the fourth, Jaxon Tomsu returned an interception for a touchdown, and the PAT was good from Cabrera to ice the game, 62-48.
Offensively, Raymond Ramirez finished 27-26 passing for 277 yards and two touchdowns, while Vasquez finished one-of-two passing for 34 yards and one score.
Ruiz led the rushing attack for Olton with 17 carries for 77 yards and three touchdowns, while Raymond Ramirez added nine carries for 21 yards. Baldo Garcia chipped in five carries for 10 yards and a score, while Adolfo Garcia finished with one carry for three yards and a score.
In the receiving game, Vasquez led the team with 10 catches for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Urbina tallied seven catches for 83 yards and Eddie Ramirez chipped in one catch for 34 yards and a touchdown. Munoz added seven catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Fabian Gutierrez led the team in tackles with 12, including two for loss, while Jacob Marquez tallied 10 tackles and one sack. Tomsu contributed eight tackles and two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, while Munoz added eight tackles and an interception. Vasquez finished with six tackles and one interception.
The Mustang’s close out the regular season this Friday with a road game against Floydada.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
