Mustangs open Wildcat Classic with victory over Roosevelt Eagles, 69-61

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team rallied back to defeated the Roosevelt Eagles on Tuesday, 6961, in their Wildcat Classic Tournament- opener.

The Roosevelt Eagles opened the contest on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Olton took a time out with 5:41 remaining in the opening quarter to talk things over. Out of the break, Nathan Urbina knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, off of the inbound pass from Jake Soliz to cut the lead to, 7-2. Soliz picked up a steal on the next play, getting it ahead to Urbina for a lay-up on the break, making it a threepoint game, 7-4.

Ethan Cervantes dropped in backto- back lay-ups for the Eagles, but Brennon Huguley answered with a lay-up, off of the assist from Urbina to make the score, 11-6, with 3:37 to play in the first quarter. Cervantes answered with a lay-up and followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push the Roosevelt lead to, 16-6. Sebastian Sandoval kept the run going for the Eagles, as he knocked down a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Cervantes, pushing their lead to, 19-6.

Olton took a time out with 1:50 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Nate Casarez took a charge on Huguley. The Eagles couldn’t capitalize, as the Mustangs regained possession and Huguley knocked down a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Sebastian Sparkman, trimming the lead to, 19-9. With time winding down in the quarter, Cervantes was fouled on an attempt by Huguley; he converted both shots at the line, but in the closing seconds, Huguley dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Andrew Martinez to cut the lead to, 21-11, heading into the second frame.

Huguley was fouled on an attempt by Michael Calzada and sank both free throws to open quarter number two. Huguley followed it up with a lay-up, before being fouled again on an attempt by Calzada with six minutes to play in the first half. He sank both free throws to make it a fourpoint game, 21-17. With 5:21 remaining in the half, Alan Vasquez dropped in a put-back off of his own miss, cutting the lead to, 21-19, as Roosevelt took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Cervantes dropped in a lay-up for the Eagles, but Jimmy Munoz answered with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Urbina, making it a one-point game, 23-22.

Cervantes responded with a layup for the Eagles, but Vasquez answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Urbina and Soliz followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal in the midcourt to put Olton in front, 26-25, with two minutes to play in the half. Huguley was fouled on an attempt by Noah Salas with just over one minute to play in the half. He made one-oftwo shots at the line to make it a onepossession Olton lead, 27-25.

Casarez dropped in a teardrop from the left side, but Martinez buried a three from the left elbow and Soliz scored a lay-up off of a steal before Cervantes was fouled on the floor by Sparkman with 1.3 seconds to play in the half. He missed the free throw, but Casarez was there for the put-back at the buzzer to cut Olton’s lead to, 3229, going into the locker room at halftime.

Cervantes opened the third quarter with a lay-up off of the assist from Calzada, but Martinez answered with a three from the left wing and Soliz scored on a fast-break off of the outlet pass from Huguley, making the score, 37-31, with 6:16 to play in the third. Casarez knocked down a pullup from the left elbow for the Eagles and Kenneth Brisset knocked down a put-back off of a miss from Salas to make it a one-possession Olton lead, 37-35.

Martinez picked up a steal and took it in for a lay-up, but on the other end, Calzada was fouled on a put-back attempt by Martinez. He sank both shots at the line to make the score, 39-37. With 2:55 to play in the quarter, Sparkman sent an outlet pass down court to Martinez, who finished off the play with a lay-up to make the score, 41-37.

Martinez followed it up with a drive for a lay-up on the left side, but Calzada answered with a lay-up drawing an and-one foul on Vasquez. He missed the free throw, leaving the score, 4339, with 1:24 to play in the third.

Martinez dropped in a transition lay-up for the Mustangs and followed it up with a three from the left wing, off of the kick out from Soliz, pushing their lead to, 48-39. Cervantes would bury a three from the top of the key to close out the third quarter for the Eagles, with Olton in front, 48-42.

Vasquez dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Kobe Mireles; he converted the free throw to stretch the lead to, 51-42.Adeflection by Soliz led to a fast-break lay-up for the Mustangs, forcing the Eagles to take a time out with 7:22 to play in the game. Out of the break, Sandoval and Martinez exchanged three’s, and the Eagles dropped in a put-back to trim the lead to, 56-47.

Cervantes drained a three from the top of the key and Brisset took a charge on Sparkman, but the Eagles couldn’t capitalize, as Huguley used a euro-step to get to the basket for a short jumper from the left side off of the assist from Martinez, making the score, 58-50, as Olton took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Cervantes dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Brisset, but Soliz answered with a three from the left wing, off of the assist from Huguley, stretching their lead to, 61-52. The Eagles responded with a bucket, but Olton came right back, as Huguley spun to the basket for a lay-up, off of the assist from Soliz, pushing their lead to, 63-54.

Calzada knocked down a jumper from the right wing, but Munoz answered with a lay-up to make the score, 65-56. Sandoval drained a three from the right wing off of the assist from Cervantes, but Huguley answered with a lay-up to make the score, 67-59. Calzada drove to the basket for a lay-up and the Eagles took a time out with 1:47 remaining. Out of the break, Martinez would drop in a put-back off of a missed free throw by Urbina to put the game away for the Mustangs.

Martinez led the team in scoring with 22 points, while Huguley poured in 21 points and Soliz netted 11 points. Vasquez chipped in seven points, while Munoz tallied five points and Urbina finished with four points in the contest.
