Mustangs open district at home with win over Post

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team won their home district- opener on Friday night, as they took down the Post Antelopes, 36-15.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5-1 overall, 1-0 in district play.

The Mustangs totaled 450 yards of offense, including 346 rushing yards and 104 passing yards.

In the first quarter, junior quarterback, Raymond Ramirez, connected with Alan Vasquez for a 35yard touchdown strike through the air, but the PAT by Chris Cabrera was no good, leaving the score, 6-0. The Antelopes would answer, as they broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run that was followed by the two-point conversion to put them in front, 8-6.

Later in the quarter, Raymond Ramirez would rush for a nine-yard touchdown run and Isaiah Ruiz would follow it up with the twopoint conversion to put the Mustangs back in front, 14-8, heading into the second quarter.

Post got the second-quarter scoring going with a 13-yard touchdown run, which was followed by the PAT to give them a one-point advantage, 15-14. Olton would respond later in the second quarter, as Fabian Gutierrez rushed for a two-yard touchdown run. Raymond Ramirez followed it up with the two-point conversion run to put Olton up, 22-15, going into the locker room at halftime.

Out of the break, Ruiz broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs up, 30-15, after the two-point conversion run by Raymond Ramirez. Ruiz would score one more time on a 13-yard run later in the third, making the score, 36-15, as Olton went on to win their district-opener over Post.

Offensively, Raymond Ramirez finished the game five-of-six passing for 104 yards and one touchdown, while adding 24 carries for 133 yards and a score on the ground.

Ruiz led the rushing attack with 26 carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns, while Gutierrez tallied four carries for 20 yards and one touchdown.

In the receiving game, Nate Urbina caught two passes for 47 yards, while Vasquez added one catch for 35 yards and a score and Eddie Ramirez tallied one catch for 15 yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Gutierrez, who tallied 14 total tackles. Jacob Marquez chipped in 11 tackles and a fumble recovery, while Vasquez contributed nine tackles, including one for loss and Michael Matute and Wyatt Nelson each added six tack-les.

The Mustangs will be at home to take on Sundown on Friday, as District play continues.

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
