The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team’s magical season continued this past weekend, when they swept the Sanford-Fritch Eagles, 2-0, in their Class 2A Area Play-off series at West Plains High School in Amarillo.
In game one, the Eagles jumped out in front early pushing two runs across in the bottom half of the first, but in the top of the third, Olton was able to get a run back, cutting the lead to, 2-1. Sanford-Fritch blanked the Mustangs in the top of the third and followed it up with two runs in the home-half of the inning to stretch their lead to, 4-1.
The Mustangs would not lay down, as they plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning and three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take their first lead of the game, 6-4. The lead was shortlived, as the Eagles scratched two runs across in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game, 6-6.
Both teams went scoreless through the sixth inning, but in the seventh, Olton came to the plate and junior, Jacob Marquez, drove in what would end up being the game winning run with a hard hit down the left-field line, securing the, 7-6, game one victory for Olton.
In game one, the Mustangs scored seven runs on 10 hits, while committing three errors defensively. Marquez finished the game 2-4 with an RBI, while senior, Brennon Huguley, went 2-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Sophomore, Alan Vasquez, was 24 at the plate with an RBI and on the mound Vasquez threw four innings, giving up two earned runs, while earning seven strike outs.
In game two, the Mustangs pitching staff combined to throw a one hit shutout. Huguley pitched four innings, giving up no hits and no runs, while earning three strike outs and Vasquez pitched 2.2 innings, giving up no runs and no hits, while earning seven strike outs.
The Mustangs plated a run in the bottom of the second inning, while adding two runs in both the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. The Mustangs scored five runs on six hits and committed no errors in game two.
Senior, Brody Langford, was 23 at the plate in game two.
The Mustangs will take on New Home in Littlefield in the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinals. Games one and two will be at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, while Game three if-needed will be on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Littlefield.
