Mustangs hold off wolverines, 7-4

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team took down the Springlake-Earth Wolverines’on Saturday, 7-4.

In the top of the first inning, Froylan Agundiz singled on a fly ball to left field and Robert Flores was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for the Wolverines. Olton’s Jett Tomsu got Tyler Tanaro to strike out looking for out number one, and he got Jacob Alvarez to ground out to him on the mound for out number two.

Bryan Longoria was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Wolverines, but Luis Fuentes struck out looking to retire the side.

Paytn Jimenez drew a lead-off walk in the home-half of the first inning and Jaxon Tomsu singled to right field, putting runners on first and second. Adolfo Garcia hit a fly ball to right field, reaching on an error by Nathan Ramos and landed on second base, as Jimenez scored and Jaxon Tomsu advanced to third making the score, 1-0.

Jett Tomsu hit a sacrifice grounder to Tanaro on the mound, as he got the out at first, as Jaxon Tomsu scored and Garcia advanced to third, making the score, 2-0. Cooper Clayton struck out swinging for out number two and Wyatt Francis grounded out to Tanaro on the mound to end the inning.

In the top of the second, Timothy Tovar struck out swinging for out number one and Ramos struck out looking for out number two. Donovan Stiggers singled on an error by Dax Light at second base and Agundiz drew a walk to put two runners on for the Wolverines.

Flores singled on a fly ball to Victor Reyes in left field to load the bases, but they would leave the bases loaded, as Tanaro popped up to Light at second base to retire the side.

In the home-half of the second, Tanaro retired the side on strikeouts to take the game into the third inning.

Alvarez drew a lead-off walk in the top of the third inning and took second on a passed ball, before Longoria struck out looking for out number one. Fuentes struck out swinging for out number two, but Alvarez took third on a passed ball and scored on an error by Callan Burns at third base to trim the lead to, 2-1, before Tovar struck out swinging to retire the side.

The Wolverines kept the Mustangs off the board in the bottom of the third and in the top of the fourth, Ramos struck out looking for out number one, but Stiggers drew a walk and took second on a bad pick-off attempt to first by Jett Tomsu.Agundiz singled on an error by Burns, as Stiggers scored to tie the game, 2-2.

Flores drew a walk to put runners on first and second for the Wolverines, but Tanaro flew out to Burns at third base to retire the side.

Tanaro would walk Jett Tomsu to begin the inning and he stole second and third, before Clayton also walked to begin the fourth inning. Jett Tomsu scored on a passed ball to put the Mustangs back in front, 3-2, as Clayton advanced to third. Francis drew a walk and Reyes laid down a sacrifice bunt to Tanaro, who got the out at first, as Clayton moved to third and Francis advanced to second on the play.

The Mustangs knocked a hard ground ball to second base on an error by Longoria and the ball got by Ramosin right field as two runs scored, stretching the Olton lead to, 5-2. Light drew a walk, but Jimenez grounded out to Longoria at second base to end the inning.

Alvarez led off the top of the fifth inning with a double to left field for the Wolverines, but Longoria and Fuentes both struck out looking. Tovar and Ramos drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Springlake-Earth and Stiggers drew a walk to bring in a run, trimming the lead to, 5-3. The Wolverines would leave the bases loaded, as Agundiz popped up to Jett Tomsu at second base to retire the side.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jett Tomsu reached on an error by Flores at third base, as Garcia scored to push the Olton lead to, 6-3 and two batters later, Jett Tomsu scored on an error by Tanaro to make the score, 7-3. Francis singled on a hard ground ball to right field, but Reyes was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to end the inning.

Flores and Tanaro hit back-to-back singles to begin the sixth inning and Alvarez hit a hard ground ball to third, reaching on an error by Burns, as Flores scored and Tanaro advanced to third, making the score, 7-4. Olton would get out of the inning, as they kept the Wolverines quiet the rest of the game, taking the contest, 7-4.
