Mustangs fall to Sundown in game two of double-header, 11-4

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team fell in game two of their double-header last Saturday to the Sundown Roughnecks, 11-4.

In the top of the first inning, Jayson Martinez singled on an error by Jett Tomsu at second base and he took second on a pitch, before Landry Farrar reached base on a bunt putting runners on the corners for Sundown. Farrar took second on a pitch, before Jaxon Rodriguez struck out swinging for out number one.

Caleb Clausen hit a chopper to Victor Reyes on the mound and reached base on a fielder’s choice, as Reyes chose to go home with it, but a bad throw to third by Jaxon Tomsu allowed Martinez to score, as Clausen took second and Farrar advanced to third with Sundown now in front, 1-0. Rian Rose hit a sacrifice grounder to Fabian Gutierrez at third base, who got the out at first as another run scored, making the score, 2-0.

Rayden Flores struck out swinging and was tagged out by Jaxon Tomsu on a dropped third strike to retire the side.

Clausen started on the mound for the Roughnecks, as he got the lead-off man, Eddie Ramirez to ground out to Martinez at second base for out number one. Cole Montgomery singled under the glove of Farrar at shortstop to give the Mustangs a base runner and Adolfo Garcia doubled to right- center field, putting runners on second and third for Olton with one out.

Jett Tomsu hit a hard ball to the left side that was stopped on a dive by Farrar, but he couldn’t make a play, as Olton cut the lead to, 2-1, with runners on the corners. Garcia was caught stealing home on a cutoff throw by Martinez at second base, who fired it back to the plate, where Garcia was tagged out by Rodriguez for out number two, as Jett Tomsu took second on the play. However, Gutierrez would fly out to deep left field to end the inning.

Reyes made quick work of the Roughnecks in the top of the second, as he got Hunter Clark to ground out to Montgomery at shortstop for out number one. Hayden Powell struck out looking for out number two and Coen Nevarez hit a chopper to Montgomery at shortstop, who got the out at first to retire the side.

The Mustang offense was kept quiet in the bottom half of the second, as Reyes and Diego Gallegos both struck out swinging and Jaxon Tomsu was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to end the inning.

Martinez doubled on a missed fly ball by Gallegos in left-center field to lead off the third inning for Sundown, but Reyes got Farrar to strike out looking for out number one. Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to Noe Mendoza in right field, as Martinez tagged up and advanced to third on the play with two outs.

Clausen hit a fly ball to leftcenter field that was dropped by Gallegos for an RBI- double, pushing the lead to, 3- 1, but Reyes would recover, as he got Ros to strike out looking to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the third, Mendoza struck out swinging for out number one, but Ramirez tripled off of the right-field fence to spark some offense for Olton. Montgomery popped up to Martinez at second base for out number two, but Garcia singled under the glove of Farrar at shortstop to drive in a run, cuting the lead to, 3-2. Garcia, though, would be thrown out at second base by Rodriguez trying to steal to end the inning.

Flores was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the fourth for Sundown and he took second on a pitch, before Clark grounded out to Montgomery at shortstop, moving Flores over to third with one out. Powell laid down a bunt that was fielded by the Mustangs, on the fielder’s choice they went to third but RJ fell on the rundown allowing a run to score and Powell to advnace to third with the score, 4-2.

Coen Nevarez lined out to Jett Tomsu at second base, but a bad throw to third allowed a run to score, making the score, 5-2, with two outs. Martinez singled and Farrar hit into a fielder’s choice to third, as they went to second with it, but the throw was off the mark, allowing Farrar to take second as another run score, stretching the lead to, 6-2.

Rodriguez ripped an RBItriple into the left-center field gap to push the lead to, 7-2, and Clausen hit a chopper to RJ at third, but a bad throw to first gave him an RBI-single, extending the lead to, 8- 2. A fake thrown to Montgomery from Gutierrez allowed a run to score and Clausen to take second on the play, with the score, 9-2. Reyes got Clark to strike out looking to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Jett Tomsu hit a grounder to third that was bobbled by Rose, allowing Jett Tomsu to beat out the throw giving Olton a base runner. He took second on a pitch, before Gutierrez drew a walk. The Runners advanced on a past ball, bit Reyes hit a chopper to Rose at third, who went home with it on the fielder’s choice to get the out at the plate for out number one.

Gallegos drew a walk to load the bases, but RJ and Mendoza both struck out swinging to end the inning.

Sundown added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 11-2 lead into the bottom half of the side.

Rose relieved Clausen on the mound for the Roughnecks to begin the bottom of the fifth inning, as Ramirez grounded out to Farrar at shortstop for out number one. Montgomery and Garcia drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on for Olton and they stole second and third on a pitch to get into scoring position.

Jett Tomsu struck out swinging and was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike as Montgomery scored and Garcia cut advanced to third, trimming the lead to, 11-3. Garcia scored on a past ball, but Gutierrez struck out swinging to end the game, as Olton fell to the Roughnecks, 11-4. Reyes threw five innings for the Mustangs giving up three walks and 11 runs, while earning eight strikeouts on the day.
