The Olton Mustangs’ varsity football team dropped a tough contests to the Texico Wolverines on Friday, 18-13.
With the loss, the Mustangs fall to, 2-1 overall on the season.
In the first quarter, Texico quarterback, Alex Fuentes, rushed for an 11-yard score to open the game, but the Wolverines missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 6-0.
The Mustangs, though, would respond in the second quarter, as senior quarterback, Raymond Ramirez, connected with sophomore wide out, Manny Carrasco, for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was missed by Chris Cabrera, leaving the score tied, 66, going into the locker room at halftime.
The Wolverines would strike again with six minutes to play in the third quarter, as Fuentes again got loose, this time for a 64-yard touchdown run. They missed again on the two-point conversion try, leaving the score, 12-6.
Texico took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter, but with 10 minutes left to play, Ramirez would connect with senior receiver, Jaxon Tomsu, for a 44-yard touchdown pass. This time, the PAT from Cabrera was good, putting the Mustangs in front, 13-12.
Texico though, would respond with seven minutes to play in the game, as Fuentes rushed for a 43yard touchdown run, as the Wolverines went on to beat Olton, 1813.
Ramirez finished the game 9-14 passing for 102 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 11 carries for 43 ayrds on the ground.
In the rushing game, Nathaniel Ruiz tallied 12 carries for 34 yards and Isaiah Ruiz finished with eight carries for 32 yards.
In the receiving game, Jaxon Tomsu tallied two catches for 45 yards and one touchdown, while Carrasco finished with four catches for 43 yards and one touchdown. Avery Garcia also had two catch for 10 yards.
Defensively, Cesar Ceballos had four total tackles and a fumble recovery, while Fabian Gutierrez led the team with 16 tackles. Jett Tomsu tallied 12 total tackles, while Emmitt Nelson finished with eight tackles. Jaxon Tomsu contributed six tackles, including one for a loss, and Jonathan Urbina and Keon Brown each had a tackle for loss as well.
The Mustangs will be at Ropes on Friday to take on the Eagles.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
