Mustangs come up short against Steers, 42-21

The Olton Mustang varsity football team’s season came to a close on Friday afternoon in Littlefield in the Class 2A-DI Bidistrict round of the play-offs, as they fell to Farwell, 42-21.

With the loss, the Mustangs finish the season with an overall mark of 7-4.

The Mustangs totaled 292 yards of offense including, 232 rushing yards and 60 passing yards.

On the Steers’ opening possession, quarterback Jonathan Armstrong recovered a high snap on the roll out, as he tossed it to Cesar Snyder, who took it 68 yards for the touchdown to put Farwell up, 7- 0, after the PAT. Olton would answer later in the first quarter, as Raymond Ramirez hit a wide-open Jimmy Munoz for a 48yard touchdown pass. The PAT by Chris Cabrera was good, tying the game, 7-7, as the first quarter came to a close.

Corey Stancell opened the second quarter with a 54-yard interception return for a touchdown, that was followed with the PAT to put the Steers back in front, 14-7. Farwell would strike again in the second frame, as Armstrong connected with Ryder McElroy for an 18-yard touchdown pass, stretching their lead to, 21-7.

Stancell would break loose for an 88-yard touchdown run to close out the first half with Farwell in front, 28-7.

Stancell would score the only points of the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to, 35-7, going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Stancell would find the end zone once more, this time on a four-yard run, pushing their lead to, 42-7, but Olton would not go down without a fight, as Alan Vasquez scored on a two-yard run. He would also run in the two-point conversion to trim the lead to, 4215. Later in the quarter, Jacob Marquez returned a Farwell fumble for a touchdown, but the Mustangs missed on the twopoint conversion, as Farwell took the Bi-district contest, 42-21.

Raymond Ramirez finished the game, three-of-10 passing for 60 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added five carries for 16 yards.

Isaiah Ruiz led the rushing attack with 25 carries for 125 yards, while Vasquez tallied seven carries for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Munoz led the receiving game for Olton with one catch for 48 yards and a touchdown, while Eddie Ramirez tallied two catches for 12 yards.

Defensively, Jacob Marquez had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
