The Olton Mustangs’ varsity basketball team cruised to a, 52-32, victory on the road on Tuesday over the Sundown Roughnecks.
With the win, the Mustnags improve to 2-0 overall on the season.
Nathan Urbina buried a three from the right wing to open the contest for Olton, but Sundown answered, as Watson Evans knocked down a fadeaway jumper from the right elbow to cut the lead to, 3-2.Andrew Martinez knocked down a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Urbina, but Evans again, answered for Sundown, this time dropping in a lay-up to make it a two-point game, 6-4, with 5:33 remaining in the opening quarter. Olton took a time out with 5:31 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Joel Olivas Jr. knocked down a runner from the left side off of the assist from Jake Soliz and on the defensive end, Jimmy Munoz picked up a steal, getting it ahead to Olivas Jr. on the twoon- one break for a lay-up to push their lead to, 10-4.
Sundown took a time out with 3:34 to play, and out of the break, Brennon Huguley dropped in a put-back off of his own miss to extend their lead to, 12-4. With 1:23 remaining in the quarter, Olton forced a five-second call on the inbound play for a Sundown turnover, but they couldn’t capitalize, as Sundown regained possession and Jaryn Flores buried a three from the right elbow to cut the lead to, 12-7.
With under one minute remaining in the quarter, Urbina kissed in a floater off the glass off of the assist from Olivas Jr. to end the first quarter with the Mustangs in front, 14-7.
Alan Vasquez dropped in a runner from the right side to open the second frame, but Evans answered with a putback of fof the miss by Alex Bocanegra, trimming the lead to, 16-9. After a time out with 5:17 to play in the half, Sebastian Sparkman drained a three from the right wing to make it a 10-point Olton lead, 19-9.
With 3:41 to play in the half, Huguley dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Olivas Jr., drawing an and-one foul on Sundown. The free throw was no good, leaving the score, 21-9. Martinez kept it going for Olton, as he knocked down another three for the Mustangs to push their lead out to, 24-9.
Huguley took a charge on Bocanegra, but Sundown was able to ragain possession, as Flores dropped in a teardrop from the left elbow off of an Olton turnover to cut the lead to, 24-11, with just over two minutes to play in the half. Huguley dropped ina reverse lay-up for Olton, but in the final minutes of play, the Roughnecks dropped in a lay-up to cut the lead to, 26-13, going into the locker room at halftime.
Soliz picked up a steal, dropping in a fast-break lay-up to open the second half for Olton, but Evans answered with back-to-back buckets for Sundown and Flores followed it up with a jumper from the left side to slice the Olton lead to, 28-19, with 4:37 to play in the third quarter.
Vasquez would score on back-toback put-backs for the Mustangs and then dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Martinez, making the score, 34-19, with 3:16 to play in the quarter. Noah Peralez took a charge on Olivas Jr. and on the other end, Bocanegra drew a blocking foul on Vasquez to earn a trip to the line. He converted one-of-two shots at the line to make the score, 34-20.
Vasquez dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Olivas Jr. and followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Raymond Ramirez to close out the third quarter with the Mustangs in front, 38-20.
Olivas Jr. opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up off of the outlet pass from Sparkman, but Sundown answered with a lay-up, before calling a quick time out to talk things over with 6:27 to play in the game. Out of the break, Urbina buried a three from the right wing, off of the cross-court assist from Sparkman, making the score, 43-22, with just under six minutes to play in the game.
Evans dropped in a put-back for Sundown, but on the other end Martinez drove the lane, kicking it out to the right elbow where Soliz buried a three to extend their lead to, 46-24.
Flores drove to the basket for a Sundown lay-up and two possessions later, Noah Peralez scored on the two-on-one break in transition for Sundown, trimming the lead to, 46-28. Soliz responded with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Sparkman, as Sundown took a time out with 3:40 to play in the game.
Out of the break, Noah Peralez knocked down a jumper from the freethrow line off of the assist from Flores, but on the other end, Olivas. Jr. was fouled on an attempt by Evans. He split the free throws, making the score, 50-30, as Sundown took a time out with 1:24 to play in the game.
Out of the break, Soliz scored a layup off of the outlet pass from Vasquez, stretching their lead to, 52-30. With just under one minute to play in the game, Munoz was called for a charge, and on the next play, Flores was fouled on the floor by Olivas Jr. he converted both free throws, as Olton went on to take the contest, 52-32.
The Mustangs were led in scoring by Vasquez, who netted 12 points. He was joined in double-figures scoring by Soliz, who finished with 10 points. Urbina tallied eight points, while Olivas Jr. finished with seven points and Martinez and Huguley each contributed six points. Sparkman added three points in the contest.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday, as they take their home court against the Dimmitt Bobcats.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
