The Olton Mustangs’ went on the road and took down the Floydada Whirlwinds, 62-7, to open district play on Friday.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in district play.
The Mustangs totaled 426 yards, including 260 rushing yards and 166 passing yards, while holding Floydada to 75 yards.
Nathaniel Ruiz got the Mustangs going in the first quarter with a fouryard touchdown run, followed with the PAT by Chris Cabrera, making the score, 7-0. They would add to their total later in the quarter, as Raymond Ramirez scored on a three-yard touchdown run, followed by Cabrera’s PAT, pushing their lead to, 14-0.
They would close out the first quarter with another score, as Zayden Falcon caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez. The PAT from Cabrera was good, making the score, 21-0, going into the second frame.
Isaiah Ruiz would open the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown run, but Cabrera’s kick was no good, leaving the score, 27-0. Floydada would answer with an eight-yard touchdown pass followed by the PAT, to cut the lead to, 27-7. But, Olton wasted no time firing back, as Jaxon Tomsu returned the next kick-off 85-yards for the touchdown. The PAT by Cabrera was good, pushing their lead back out to, 34-7.
Later in the second quarter, Isaiah Ruiz scored on a seven-yard touchdown run and Nathaniel Ruiz close out the half with a one-yard touchdown run. Both PAT’s were good from Cabrera, making the score, 48-7, going into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Falcon caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Ramirez, followed by the PAT by Cabrera, making the score, 55-7, going into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, Fabian Gutierrez scored on a three-yard touchdown run and Cabrera nailed the PAT, as Olton went on to throttle the Whirlwinds, 62-7.
Offensively, Ramirez finished the game 10-14 passing for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while adding six carries for 23 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Nathaniel Ruiz led the rushing attack with 16 carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns, while Isaiah Ruiz tallied nine carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Gutierrez added two carries for three yards and one touchdown.
In the receiving game, Falcon caught three passes for 61 yards and two touchdowns, while Alan Vasquez caught two passes for 46 yards and Manny Carrasco hauled in two passes for 27 yards. Gutierrez added one catch for 13 yards, while Wyatt DeBerry caught two passes for 10 yards and Jaxon Tomsu finished with one catch for nine yards.
Defensively, the Mustangs totaled six sacks and six tackles for loss, while Carrasco recovered a fumble.
The Mustangs will be at Post on Friday for a big District match-up with the Antelopes.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
