The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team advanced to the winners bracket of the Whitharral Tournament on Thursday, as they took down the host team Lady Panthers, 48-35.
The Lady Wolverines opened the contest on a, 13-9, scoring run, as Whitharral took a time out with 2:06 to play in the opening quarter. Out of the break, Taytum Goodman picked up a steal in their own end and got it to Emma Samaron, who dropped in a lay-up to extend their lead to, 15-9, heading into quarter number two.
Nickelson dropped in a lay-up off of the outlet pass from Chavez, but Samaron answered with a drive on the right baseline for a lay-up, pushing the lead back out to, 17-11. The Lady Panthers answered with a layup and on the defensive end, Nickelson took a charge on Halee Toscano to regain possession for Whitharral.
Chavez dropped in a lay-up on the right side, but with 4:27 remaining in the first half, Sydney Furr was fouled on a defensive rebound by Bates. She made the first shot of the one-in-one opportunity, but the Lady Wolverines were called for a lane violation on the next shot, leaving the score, 18-15.
Chavez was called for a charge, and Samaron answered with a floater in the lane to push their lead back out to, 20-15, as Whitharral took a time out with 2:49 to play in the first half. Out of the break, Toscano banked in a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Aryca Ibarra, but the Lady Panthers quickly responded, as McCain dropped in a lay-up on the left side to make the score, 23-17.
With under a minute to play in the half, McCain was fouled on an attempt by Samaron; she split the free throws and on the following play, Chavez picked up a steal from Toscano and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up, trimming the lead to, 23-21, going into the locker room at halftime.
Sydney Furr knocked down a jumper in the lane to open the second half, and Toscano dropped in back-to-back lay-ups to push their lead out to, 29-21, before Chavez dropped in a reverse-lay-up to trim the lead to, 29-23, with 6:22 to play in the third quarter.
Goodman buried a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Ibarra to push the lead to doubledigits for the Lady Wolverines, as Whitharral took a time out to talk things over with 5:29 to play in the quarter. With 4:15 to play in the quarter, Toscano drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Samaron, but McCain answered with a drive on the right side of the basket for a lay-up to trim the lead to, 35-25.
Samaron dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Sydney Furr, but McCain again answered with a layup on the other end to keep it a 10point game, 37-27. Toscano responded with a lay-up off of the assist from Goodman, but Chavez dropped in a lay-up on the other end to make the score, 39- 29. Samaron was fouled at the buzzer by Bates; she split the free throws to make the score, 40-29, going into the final quarter of play.
Springlake-Earth took a time out with 6:49 to play in the fourth quarter, and out of the break, Samaron drove the right side for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 42-29. Reyna split a pair of free throws, after being fouled by Ibarra, but Ibarra made up for it on the other end, as she dropped in a put-back to extend the lead to, 44-30, with 3:47 left to play in the game.
Parkinson split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Toscano and Springlake-Earth called a time out with 2:35 remaining. Out of the break, Parkinson was fouled again on an attempt by Toscano. She made one-of-two shots at the line to trim the lead to, 44-32.
Samaron dropped in a lay-up, but Chavez split a pair of free throws and followed it up with a lay-up, but in the closing seconds, Samaron dropped in a lay-up, as the Lady Wolverines closed out the Lady Panthers, 48-35.
Toscano led the team in scoring with 20 points, and she was joined in double- figures scoring by Samaron, who tallied 15 points. Goodman netted six points, while Ibarra tallied four points, and Sydney Furr finished with three points.
