Lady Wolverines fall to Plains at Whiteface Tourney

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team fell to the Plains Cowgirls on Thursday, 44-40, in their first game at the Whiteface Tournament.

With the loss, the Lady Wolverines fall to 0-1 in tournament play.

Plains opened the contest on a, 90, scoring run, before Sydney Furr knocked down a jumper in the lane off of the assist from Taytum Goodman, trimming the lead to, 9-2, with 4:33 remaining in the opening quarter. Goodman dropped in a lay-up in transition to slice the lead to, 9-4, but Plains answered with a lay-up by Lily Davis off of the long inbound pass from Goodman, pushing the lead back out to, 11-4.

With under one minute to play in the quarter, Emma Samaron drove to the basket for a lay-up to trim the lead to, 11-6, as the first quarter came to a close.

Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Reagan Guerra to open the second frame. She split the free throw attempts to make the score, 11-7, as Plains took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Goodman picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up to make it a one-possession game, but Plains answered, as Mallory Bunch dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Davis, making the score, 13-9, with just under five minutes to play in the first half.

With 2:35 to play in the half, Halee Toscano buried a three from the left elbow and Goodman followed it up with a fast-break lay-up off of a steal to put the Lady Wolverines in front1413.

Plains, though, would close out the first half with back-to-back lay-ups by Bunch and Marissa Garcia to reclaim the lead, 17-14, going into the locker room at halftime.

Out of the break, Toscano was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Davis. She missed the free throws, but Samaron was there for the offensive rebound and the put-back to make it a one-point Plains lead, 17-16. Guerra scored a put-back off of a pair of missed free throws by Abcde Vasquez, but on the other end, Furr was fouled on a put-back attempt, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 1917, with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter.

With under six minutes to play in the quarter, Goodman was fouled on a put-back attempt by Davis and split the free throws to make it a one-point game, but on the other end, Vasquez earned a trip to the line after being fouled by Jasmine Garcia. She split the free throws to make it a one-possession Plains lead, 20-18.

With under five minutes to play in the third, Vasquez dropped in a layup for the Cowgirls, but Goodman answered grabbing a defensive rebound and going coast-to-coast for a transition lay-up to keep it a one-point game, 22-20. Guerra scored a put-back for Plains, but on the other end, Samaron drew a shooting foul on Guerra. She converted both shots at the line and followed it up with a layup to tie the game, 24-24, with 2:39 to play in the quarter.

Marissa Garcia used a back-door cut to get to the basket for a lay-up, but Springlake-Earth answered with a three from the right elbow, off of the assist from Samaron to regain the lead, 27-26. With time winding down in the quarter, Bunch would drop in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Vasquez to put the Cowgirls in front, 28-27, going into the final quarter of play.

Samaron opened the fourth quarter with a three from the left elbow, but Plains answered with a lay-up from Bunch off of the assist from Marissa Garcia to tie the game, 30-30. Toscano was fouled on an attempt by Marissa Garcia and sank both free throws to regain the lead for the Lady Wolverines, 32-30, with 6:32 to play.

With just over six minutes remaining in the game, a block by Samaron was gathered by Goodman and taken the other way for a fast-break lay-up, as the Lady Wolverines extended their lead to, 34-30, as the Cowgirls took a time out with 6:05 left in the game.

Out of the break, Plains went on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Samaron was fouled on an attempt by Guerra with 3:33 left to play in the game. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 37-35. Goodman followed it up with a three from the left wing off of the assist from Toscano to regain the lead for Springlake-Earth, 38-37, but it was short-lived, as Plains went on another, 4-0, scoring run to take a, 41-38, lead with 1:44 remaining in the contest.

Furr knocked down a jumper from the right wing off of the assist from Toscano, but Plains would close out the game going three-of-four from the free-throw line to take the contest, 4440.

Goodman led the Lady Wolverines in scoring with 14 points, and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Samaron, who tallied 13 points. Toscano chipped in eight points, while Sydney Furr finished with five points in the contest.
