The Springlake- Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team fell at home on Tuesday night to the Wildorado Lady Mustangs, 55-32.
With the loss the Lady Wolverines fall to 2-5 overall on the year.
Taylor Albracht took a charge on Caydee Humphrey to open the contest, but with 5:18 to play in the opening quarter, Humphrey drew a shooting foul on Perkins, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots at the free-throw line to put the Lady Wolverines in front, 20. With just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, Natalie Rosalez dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Montgomery. She converted the free throw to stretch their lead to, 5-0.
The Lady Mustangs took a time out with 3:32 to play in the quarter, and out of the break, Jocelyn Salas was fouled on the floor by Perkins, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots at the foul line, making it a, 6-0, scoring run for Springlake-Earth.
Albracht would take a charge on Jessica Mendoza and Montgomery would capitalize on the turnover as she buried a three from the left elbow for the Lady Mustangs, cutting the lead to, 6-3, with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Montgomery dropped in a put-back for the Lady Mustangs to make it a one-point Lady Wolverine lead, but on the other end, Humprey was fouled on an attempt by Matt. She sank both shots from the line to push the lead back out to, 8-5.
With 1:10 to play in the first quarter, Montgomery was fouled on the floor by Jenna Stevenson. She made one-of-two shots from the line to make it a one-possession game, 8-6, going into quarter number two.
In the second frame, Montgomery was fouled on an attempt by Enna Mosqueda; she converted both shots from the line to tie the game, 8-8. Daniels dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Montgomery and Montgomery followed it up with a lay-up to put Wildorado in front, 12-8, with 6:47 to play in the half.
Rosalez knocked down a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Salas, but Montgomery answered on the other end with a three from the left elbow, pushing the Wildorado lead to, 15-10, with 4:45 left to play in the first half.
With just over four minutes to go in the half, Montgomery was fouled on an attempt by Mosqueda, her third. She sank both shots at the line, stretching their lead to, 17-10. Mendoza dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Rosalez, trimming the lead to, 17-12, but on the other end, Perkins was fouled on an attempt by Rosalez with just under two minutes to play in the half. She converted both shots at the line and Daniels followed it up with a steal in their own end, taking it to the hoop for a lay-up to push the lead to, 21-12.
Stevenson knocked down a jumper from the left side, but Perkins answered with a put-back off of her own miss on the other end, making the score, 23-14. With time winding down in the half, Humphrey was fouled on an attempt by Montgomery. She made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 23-15, going into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, Wildorado opened the second half on a, 9-0, scoring run, before Springlake-Earth took a time out to talk things over with 5:06 to go in the third quarter. Out of the break, Mosqueda was fouled on an attempt by Daniels, her second. She split the attempts at the line to trim the lead to, 32-16.
Mendoza picked up a steal, as the Lady Wolverines took a time out to prevent a jumpball with 4:38 to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Mosqueda was fouled on an attempt by Matt, her second. She split the shots from the line to make the score, 32-17. With 3:41 remaining in the quarter, Salas poked the ball away, as it was picked up by Braylee Herriage, who tossed it ahead to Salas on the break, who spun to the basket for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 32-19.
Wildorado responded with a, 9-0, scoring run, before Salas grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-tocoast for the lay-up to close out the third quarter with Wildorado in front, 41-21.
With just over five minutes remaining in the contest, Salas was fouled on an attempt by Matt, her third. She converted one-of-two shots from the line to make the score, 41-22, but on the other end, Matt was fouled on a put-back attempt by Humphrey, her third. She sank the first shot, but missed the second, leaving the score, 42-22.
Montgomery buried a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Matt, but on the next play, Rosalez was fouled on the floor by Matt, her fourth, earning a trip to the line. She converted both foul shots to trim the lead to, 45-24. Perkins drew a shooting foul on Rosalez, her fourth; she made one- of- two shots from the line, pushing their lead to, 46-24, with 3:33 left to play.
Salas passed the ball to Herriage, as Herriage gave it right back to Salas on the cut to the basket for a layup, as she drew an and-one foul on Montgomery, her third. Salas converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 46-27, with 2:14 to play in the game.
Perkins split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Salas, but on the other end, Humphrey drew a shooting foul on Perkins, her third. She converted both attempts at the line, but Daniels hit Montgomery for a lay-up on the other end for the quick answer, pushing the lead to, 49-29.
Wildorado took a time out with 2:15 to play, and out of the break, Daniels and Perkins scored back- toback lay-ups to extend their lead to, 53-29, with under two minutes to go in the contest. Herriage converted three three throws, but with under a minute to go, Albracht sank a pair of shots from the line to close out the game, as the Lady Wolverines fell at home, 55-32.
Salas led the team in scoring with nine points, while Humphrey and Rosalez each chipped in seven points, and Herriage contributed three points. Mosqueda, Stevenson and Mendoza each added two points in the contest.
