The Springlake- Earth Lady Wolverines’ varsity basketball team won their Springlake-Earth Tournament- opener over the Amherst Lady Bulldogs on Thursday, 62-15.
Caydee Humphrey dropped in back-to-back lay-ups to open the scoring for the Lady Wolverines and Braylee Herriage followed it up with a lay-up in transition to stretch their lead to, 6-0, with just over five minutes to go in the opening quarter. Jocelyn Salas buried a three from the right side to stretch their lead to, 9-0, but on the other end, Rodriguez was fouled on a three-point attempt by Ennah Mosqueda, earning a trip to the line.
Rodriguez converted all three free throws to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board, trailing, 9- 3. Jessican Mendoza was fouled on a shot attempt by Flores; she made one- of- two shots from the line to make it a seven-point game, 10-3, with 2:25 to play in the first quarter.
Salas buried a three from the top of the key for Springlake- Earth and Mosqueda followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups to close out the first quarter with the Lady Wolverines in front, 17-3.
Humphrey scored a transition bucket to open the second frame for Springlake- Earth and Mosqueda followed it up with a bucket, as the Lady Wolverines took a time out with 6:36 to play in the first half. Out of the break, Humphrey was fouled on an attempt by Flores, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots at the line to make the score, 233.
Mosqueda hit Salas in transition for a lay-up and Humphrey followed it up with back-to-back lay-ups, as Amherst took a time out, trailing, 29-3. Out of the break, Salas picked up a steal and took it the other way on the fast-break for a lay-up with just over two minutes to play in the half, making the score, 31-3.
Mosqueda kept the scoring run going with a lay-up off of the assist from Herriage and Salas followed it up with a lay-up off of an Amherst turnover, stretching the lead to, 35-3. With under a minute to play in the half, Mendoza grabbed a steal and hit Salas in transition for the lay-up and Jenna Stevenson knocked down a jumper in the lane to close out the first half with Springlake-Earth in front, 39-3.
Rodriguez knocked down a three for Amherst to open the second half, but Mendoza answered on the other end with a put-back off of a miss by Salas and Humphrey followed it up with a floater on the left side to stretch their lead to, 43-6.
Springlake- Earth received a technical for stepping over the boundary line on an inbound play, sending Rodriguez to the line for a pair of free throws. She converted one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 43-7, as Springlake-Earth took a time out with 4:43 to play in the third quarter.
Out of the break Humphrey dropped in a layup, but Muniz answered with a lay-up on the other end for Amherst, trimming the lead to, 45-9. With just over three minutes to play in the third quarter Humphrey tossed the outlet pass ahead to Herriage, who dropped in the lay-up on the fast-break to make the score, 47-9.
On the other end, Rodriguez was fouled on a three- point attempt by Humphrey and converted two-of-three shots to trim the lead to, 47-11. With just over a minute to play in the third, Humphrey dropped in a floater in the lane and Mendoza scored a lay-up off of a steal to close out the third quarter with the Lady Wolverines in front, 51-11.
Rodriguez opened the fourth quarter with a three from the right wing, but Humphrey answered with a three on the other end from the top of the key, off of the assist from Mosqueda, making the score, 54-14. Springlake-Earth took a time out, and out of the break, Muniz was fouled on an attempt by Mendoza. She split the attempts at the line to make the score, 54-15, with 4:34 left to play.
Mendoza knocked down a three from the right wing off of the assist from Salas and Salas followed it up with a jumper from the right elbow, pushing the lead to, 5915. Amherst took a time out with 2:31 to play, and out of the break, Mosqueda was fouled on an attempt by Muniz. She made the first shot, but missed the second, however, Natalie Rosalez was there for the put-back, as the Lady Wolverines took down Amherst, 62-15.
Humphrey led the Lady Wolverines in scoring with 21 points and she was joined in double-figures scoring by Salas, who netted 16 points. Mosqueda tallied nine points, while Mendoza chipped in eight points, and Herriage added four points. Rosalez and Stevenson each finished with two points in the contest.
Amherst was led by Rodriguez who finished with 12 points and Muniz, who finished with three points.
