Lady Cats take down Roosevelt, 14-6

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team took their first meeting with the Roosevelt Lady Eagles on the road on Monday, 14-6.

With the win, the Lady Cats improved to 11-5 overall, 3-2 in district play.

Bryndle Ray and Alyssa Torres drew back-to-back walks to open the game for the Lady Cats, before Abby Rodriguez hit a short fly ball to Grimes at first base for out number one. Natalia Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to right field, moving Ray to third to put runners on the corners for the Lady Cats with two outs. Amaya McCanick, though, would fly out to shortstop to retire the side.

In the home-half of the first inning, Mendoza singled to center field to give the Lady Eagles a base runner, but Dossey popped up to McCanick on the first-base side for out number one. Bryant flew out to Cali Saldana in shallow center field for out number two and Rodriguez struck out swinging to end the inning.

Maggie McNeese got the Lady Cat offense going in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun to center field, making the score, 1-0. Saldana followed it up with a single up the middle and took second on a pitch, before Hannah Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that allowed Saldana to advance to third with one out.

Myli Hernandez ripped a two-RBI single to right-center field to make the score, 2-0, before Ray popped up to the catcher in front of the plate and Torres lined out to Putman in right field to retire the side.

Goley drew a lead off walk for the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the second inning, but Grimes lined out to Hernandez in right field for out number one and Putman grounded into a fielder’s choice to Brinley Acevedo at second base, who got the force out at second for out number two. Daniel had a short fly ball fall between Rodriguez and McCanick on the left side, but Pleasent hit a grounder to Ray up the middle, who stepped on second for the out to end the inning.

The Lady Cats broke it open in the top of the third inning, as Rodriguez led off with a single over third base. She took second on a bad throw in from the outfield and Sanchez singled on a fielder’s choice by Bryant at shortstop, putting runners on the corners for Littlefield.

McCanick laid down a bunt and nobody covered at first, loading the bases for the Lady Cats. McNeese followed it up with a two-RBI single off of the top of the right-center field fence to stretch the lead to, 4-0. McNeese took second on a throw down to third, before Saldana hit a sacrifice fly to Goley in left field, that allowed McCanick to tag-up and score and McNeese to advance to third, making the score, 5-0.

Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score McNeese from third, pushing their lead to, 6-0, and Hernandez singled through the left side to give the Lady Cats a base runner. Ray andTorres drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and Rodriguez drew a walk to bring in a run, making the score, 7-0, as Mendoza relieved Pleasent in the circle for Roosevelt.

Sanchez was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and McCanick drew an RBI-walk, extending their lead to, 9-0. Rodriguez scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead to, 10-0, before McNeese grounded out to first to retire the side.

McCanick got the Lady Eagles to go three-up-and-three-down in the bottom of the third inning, but the Lady Cats were unable to add any runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Saldana relieved McCanick in the bottom of the fourth inning in the circle for Littlefield and Rodriguez singled on a line drive to center field, before Grimes lined out to Hernandez in right field for out number one. Grimes singled on a line drive over first to put runners on the corners for the Lady Eagles and Grimes took second on a pitch, before Putman hit an RBIsingle to McCanick at shortstop, who made a bad throw to first allowing a run to score, putting Putman on second with the score cut to, 10-1.

Daniel drove an RBI-single up the middle to trim the lead to, 10-2, and she took second on a pitch, before Pleasent hit into a fielder’s choice to Rodriguez at third, who tried to tag the runner at third, loading the bases for Roosevelt.

Mendoza would line out to Torres in left field, who fired to Rodriguez at third for the doubleplay to end the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Torres drew a walk, and took second on a ball in the dirt, but Rodriguez was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike for out number one. Sanchez struck out swinging for out number two, but Torres stole third on a passed ball and McCanick followed it up with an RBI-single to Bryant at shortstop, beating out the throw to first, making the score, 11-2.

McNeese, though, would pop up to Bryant at shortstop to retire the side.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Saldana got Dossey to ground out to McCanick at shortstop for out number one. But, Bryant doubled down the third- base line and Rodriguez followed it up with a single to right field putting runners on the corners for Roosevelt. Bryant scored on a passed ball, as Rodriguez took second, trimming the lead to, 11-3. Goley hit a slow roller to Acevedo at second base and beat the throw to first, putting runners on the corners for the Lady Eagles and Grimes hit an RBIdouble to center field on a missed diving attempt by Ray, cutting the lead to, 11-4.

Putman hit a sacrifice grounder to Acevedo at second base, who got the force out at second for out number two, as another run scored to cut the lead to, 11-5. Daniel drove in a run with single up the middle to make the score, 11-6, as McCanick reentered the circle for Saldana. She would get Pleasent to strike out looking to end the inning.

The Lady Cats would push two runs across in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun by Sanchez, as they went on to take the contest, 14-6.

McCanick pitched 5.1 innings for the Lady Cats, giving up three hits and one walk, while earning six strikeouts. Saldana pitched 1.2 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs, two earned.

The Lady Cats will be back in action on Tuesday to take on the Slaton Tigerettes.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
