The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team won a tight match over Lamesa Thursday afternoon, 2-1, at the Littlefield Tournament.
The Lady Cats led for most of set one, but after leading 21-16, Lamesa mounted a comeback. Myli Hernandez was blocked by Mya Carrejo for a kill and Bri Valdez was called for a double-hit on the next play to trim the lead to, 21-18.
Alyiah Morales sent a serve short of the net for Lamesa, but a hit by Hernandez on the next play did not make it over the net for the Lady Cats, cutting the lead to, 2219. Kenzi Jordan delivered a kill that Audrey Rivera couldn’t get to on the dig, but The Lady Tornadoes would not go away.
Lamesa answered with a kill by Reagan Derington and a kill attempt on the next play from Julie Bownds landed just outside the back boundary line making it a twopoint game, 23-21. A save by Madi Brown fell short of the net, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over with their lead cut to, 23-22.
Out of the break, Maggie McNeese could not get a hit inside of the foul pole, as Lamesa tied the set, 23- 23. Averie Crittendon delivered a kill off of Brown for Lamesa and McNeese sent a tip outside the foul pole, as Lamesa stormed back to take set one, 23-25.
In set two, Bownds had a kill fall in after being partially blocked at the net by Crittendon, but a hit into the net by Jordan on the next play gave the serve to Lamesa with the score, 1-1. Jordan sent another hit into the net to give Lamesa a brief lead, but Bownds answered on the next play with a kill past Sagen Hill and a tip by Kennadi Hanlin tipped the net for a kill on the following play to put the Lady Cats back in front, 3-2.
Zoey Sifuentes was called for touching the net on a play for Lamesa and a tip on the next play by Nelly Dominguez was blocked by Bownds for a kill to push their lead to, 5-2. Dominguez set a ball up for Lamesa, but none of her teammates played it making the score, 6-2, as the Lady Tornadoes took a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Bownds dropped a kill in the back corner of the court and followed it up with another kill past Rivera, stretching their lead to, 8-2. Dominguez sent a kill attempt sailing out of bounds for Lamesa, but the rally ended when Bownds touched the net on a kill attempt at the net, trimming the lead to, 9-3, as Lamesa regained the serve.
Littlefield did not flinch, as Bryndle Ray set Bownds up for a kill on the next play off of the block attempt by Carrejo, making the score, 10-3. Carrejo sent a hit on the next play into the net and Fashaa Edwards sent a tip on the following play out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 123, as Lamesa took another time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Sifuentes hit a ball into the net, but Bownds’ following serve sailed out of bounds making the score, 13-4. Lamesa couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, as Carrejo’s serve sailed over the back boundary line for a Littlefield point. The Lady Tornadoes would answer with back-to-back points, before Hanlin served up an ace off of Carrejo to make the score, 16-6.
M’Kenzie Armendariz slid across the line on a dig attempt and hanlin followed it up with an ace off of Morales, before her next serve fell out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 18-7. Jordan sent a hit into the net, but Hernandez responded with a kill across the court off of the set from Valdez to make the score, 19-8.
Derington and Sifuentes sent back-to-back hits into the net for Lamesa, before Derington delivered a kill off of Valdez to trim the lead to, 21-9. Dominguez followed it up with an ace inside the back boundary line and Sifuentes kept the rally going with a kill in the back corner to cut the lead to, 2111. However, Bownds ended the Lamesa rally with a kill off of the block attempt by Derington. Ray set Bownds up for a kill off of the block attempt by Derington on the next play, but Bownds was called for touching the net one play later, making the score, 23-12.
Dominguez came across the net on a save attempt and Kamryn Jimenez sent a hit out of bounds on the sideline, before Ray dropped in a tip that was hit out of bounds by Edwards, making the score, 25-13, as Littlefield tied the match, 1-1.
After exchanging points to begin set three, Derington sent a hit sailing out of bounds to put Littlefield back on top, 2- 1. Sifuentes sent a hit on the next play into the net, but Crittendon followed it up with a kill to make the score, 3-2. Bownds had a kill attempt blocked by Derington for a kill to tie the set, 3-3, but Hill’s next serve landed out of bounds putting Littlefield back in front, 43.
Dominguez was called for a double hit on the set and Bownds delivered a kill that was tipped out of bounds by Rivera, pushing their lead to, 6-3. Derington sent a hit into the net and Sifuentes had a tip land out of bounds, stretching the Littlefield lead to, 8-3. Derington ended the rally with a kill past Ray, but it was short-lived, as Sifuentes sent a kill sailing out of bounds, making the score, 9-4.
Taryn Golden sent a hit into the net for Littlefield, but Lamesa couldn’t capitalize, as Hill had a hit land out of bounds to make the score, 10-5. Hanlin delivered a kill between Derington and Hill and each team sent a serve short of the net, before Crittendon delivered a kill off of the partial block from Hernandez to cut the lead to, 12-7.
A few plays later, Dominguez would tie the set, 14-14, with an ace off of Amiah Elizondo, forcing Littlefield to take a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Valdez sent a hit out of bounds and Dominguez followed it up with an ace in front of Jimenez to give Lamesa a two-point advantage, 14-16. Bownds delivered a block on Sifuentes for a kill, but Ray sent a tip into the net on the next play to make the score, 15-17.
Lamesa sent back-to-back kill attempts sailing out of bounds to tie the set, 17-17, but they would respond, as Derington had a kill tipped out of bounds by Ray. Sifuentes would hit the pole with a hit to keep the set tied, 18-18, and Golden followed it up with a kill at the net to give Littlefield a one-point lead, 19-18, as Lamesa took a time out to discuss things.
Out of the break, a tip by Lamesa was hit out of bounds by Bownd and Sifuentes followed it up with an ace inside the back boundary line to make the score, 19-20. Hernandez had a kill tipped out of bounds by Derington and Carrejo sent a hit sailing out of bounds to give the Lady Cats a brief lead, but it was short- lived, as Hernandez sent a hit into the net on the next play to keep the set knotted up, 21-21.
Hernandez delivered a kill off of a long dig by Derington and she followed it up with a kill off of Crittendon to make the score, 2321. Hanlin’s serve fell short of the net, but on the next play, Derington touched the net on a block attempt, pushing the Littlefield lead to, 24-22. Hernandez couldn’t put them away as her serve fell short of the net and on the following play Dominguez tipped the net for an ace to tie the set, 24-24.
Valdez floated a tip over Crittendon and Derington for a kill, but Lamesa answered as Derington dropped a tip past Bownds for a kill, tying the set, 25-25. Bownds answered with a kill past Hill, but some miss-communication by the Lady Cats on the following play kept the set tied, 26-26.
Bownds delivered a kill off of Carrejo, but Hanlin sent a hit into the net on the next play, keeping the game tied, 27-27. Hernandez, though would respond with a kill in the back row and Carrejo sent a hit into the net on the next play to give Littlefield the set, 29-27, and the match, 2-1.
