Lady Cats pull away late from Roosevelt, 65-39

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team pulled away in the second half of Wednesday’s district contest with Roosevelt, taking down the Lady Eagles, 65-39.

With the win, the Lady Cats are 19-10 overall, 8-4 in district play.

Jaslynn Chavira was fouled on an attempt by Amoni Jefferson with less than one minute gone in the opening quarter. She converted both shots at the line to put the Lady Eagles in front, 2-0. Jefferson drove the middle for a lay-up on the other end, drawing an and-one foul on Kyndal Grimes. She converted the free throw to put the Lady Cats in front, 3-2.

Zalise Davis grabbed a defensive rebound and sent the outlet pass down court to Jefferson, who finished off the break with a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 5-2, as the Lady Eagles took a time out with 4:41 to play in the first quarter. Out of the break Stormy Trevino drove the middle for a lay-up, but on the other end, Nia Cleveland answered with a put-back off of a miss by Cobi Saldana, pushing their lead to, 7-4, with 4:13 to play in the quarter.

Davis followed it up with a lay-up, but Roosevelt responded with a lay-up of their own and Rogers followed it up with a steal in their own end for an easy lay-up off of the turnover by Davis, making it a one-point Littlefield lead, 9-8. Davis responded with a lay-up on the other end, drawing an and-one foul on Franco. The free throw was no good, pushing the Lady Cat lead back out to, 11-8. With under a minute to go in the first quarter, Chavira drained a three from the top of the key, but Williams closed out the quarter with a floater off of the glass to put the Lady Cats in front, 13-11, going into quarter number two.

Davis opened the second frame with a steal, taking it down court for the fastbreak lay-up, drawing an and- one foul on Honda Perez, her second. She converted the free throw to stretch their lead to, 16-11. Roosevelt took a time out to prevent a jumpball with 6:31 to play in the half, and out of the break, Grimes knocked down a jumper from the right elbow, making the score, 16-13.

With 2:55 to play in the half, Saldana picked up a steal and raced down court for a fast-break lay-up, but Franco answered with a lay-up for Roosevelt, making the score, 18- 15. Littlefield took a time out with 59 seconds to play in the half, and out of the break, Jefferson hit Saldana on a back door cut for a layup to extend their lead to, 20-15.

Williams scored on a fastbreak lay-up, and Saldana closed out the half with a put-back off of a miss by Davis in transition, making the score, 24-17, going into the locker room at halftime.

Grimes was fouled on an attempt by Davis to open the second half. She converted both shots at the line to trim the lead to, 24-19. On the other end, Cleveland dropped in a put-back off of her own miss and Jefferson followed it up with a lay-up, stretching their lead back out to, 28-19, with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter.

Jefferson was fouled on a put-back attempt off of her own miss by Chavira; she sank both shots at the line, and on the next play, Williams grabbed a defensive rebound and launched the outlet pass down court to Jefferson for a fast-break lay-up, making the score, 32-19. Chavira buried a three from the top of the key for the Lady Eagles to make it a 10-point game, but Jefferson answered with a three of her own from the top of the key, off of an assist from Williams, stretching the lead to, 35-22.

With under four minutes to play in the third, Williams drove to the basket, kicking the ball out to Davis, who knocked down a three from the right elbow, and Saldana followed it up with a three from the left wing to push their lead to, 41-22. Chavira knocked down a jumper from the left wing, but on the other end, Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Price. She made one-of-two shots at the line, pushing their lead to, 42-24, with 2:37 left to play in the quarter.

Trevino and Bryant drained back-to-back threes for the Lady Eagles, but with time winding down in the quarter, Jefferson saved a ball to Williams, who took it down court, using a eurostep to get to the basket for a lay-up to close out the third quarter with Littlefield in front, 44-30.

Williams opened the fourth quarter with a pullup jumper from the right elbow and Jefferson followed it up with back-to-back layups, extending their lead to, 50-30, with 6:08 left to play in the game. Jefferson drove the lane, bouncing the ball to Cleveland for a layup and on their next possession, Davis sent an outlet pass down court to Williams for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 54-30.

Trevino knocked down a three from the elbow for Roosevelt, but on the other end, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Grimes, her second. She made the first shot and missed the second, but she was able to gather the offensive rebound, which led to a lay-up for Davis, making the score, 5733.

Bryant and Chavira knocked down back- toback threes for the Lady Eagles, but Littlefield answered with a three to push their lead to, 60-37. With 1:40 to play in the game, Williams picked up a steal and got it ahead to Jefferson for the fast-break lay-up, as she drew an and-one foul on Trevino, her second. She converted the free throw to push their lead to, 63-37.

Bryant knocked down a jumper from the left wing with under a minute to play, but Jefferson converted a pair of free throws to close out the game, as Littlefield swept the season series with Roosevelt, 65-39.

The Lady cats were led by Jefferson, who netted 24 points, as one of four Lady Cats in double-figures scoring. Williams tallied 13 points, while Davis chipped in 12 points and Saldana added 10 points. Cleveland finished with six points in the contest.

The Lady Cats were at Slaton on Friday for their second meeting with the Tigerettes. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Tuesday with a home game against Friona.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
