Lady Cats move to 8-0 in district with win over Lamesa

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity baksetball team swept the season series with Lamesa on Friday, taking down the Lady Tornadoes, 48-39, to improve to 8-0 in district play.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 17-9 overall on the season.

Madison McNeese knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to open the contest for Littlefield and Amiah Elizondo followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push their lead to, 5-0, as Lamesa took a time out to talk things over, with 5:30 to play in the opening quarter. Out of the break, McNeese knocked down a jumper from the top of the key, off of an assist from Maerysa Saenz, stretching their lead to, 7-0.

With just under five minutes to play in the first quarter, Laila Vasquez was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Arianna Cruz. She made two-of-three shots at the line to get Lamesa on the board, still trailing the Lady Cats, 7- 2. McNeese dropped in a put-back off of her own miss, but Lamesa answered with a steal by Reagan Derington, as she took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, trimming the lead to, 9-4.

Meagan Hill followed it up with a three from the right wing and Fashaa Edwards banked in a deep two-pointer from the right elbow to tie the game, 9-9, with 1:14 remaining in the first. With time winding down in the quarter, Kyndal Edgemon dropped in a floater in the lane off of an assist from Cruz to put the Lady Cats in front, 11-9, as the first quarter came to a close.

Elizondo drove the lane, kicking the ball out to Cruz on the right elbow, who buried a three to stretch their lead to, 14-9 to open the second frame. But, on the other end, Mya Carrejo was fouled on an attemp by Edgemon; she made one-of-two shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 14-10.

With under five minutes remaining in the half, Savannah Moreno was fouled on an attempt by Jazmine Barrios; she missed both shots at the line, but Moreno was able to gather the offensive rebound and drop it in for a lay-up to make it a one-possession game, 14-12. Elizondo was fouled on an attempt by Audrey Rivera and sank both shots at the line to make it a four-point game, but Lamesa quickly answered, as Moreno dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Laila Vasquez to make the score, 16-14.

With 3:22 to play in the half, Kennadi Hanlin crashed the boards and dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Cruz, and Edgemon followed it up on their next possession with a put-back off of a miss by Hanlin, making the score, 20-14. With under two minutes remaining in the half, Elizondo dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Hanlin, and on the defensive end, Hanlin took a charge on Reagan Derington to regain possession for the Lady Cats.

Lamesa regained possession with under a minute remaining in the half and Rivera drooped in a put-back off of a miss by Moreno, trimming the lead to, 22-16. With time winding down in the quarter, Laila Vasquez was called for a technical foul sending Cruz to the line for a pair of free throws. Cruz converted both free throws and followed it up with a floater off of the glass at the buzzer on an assist from Saenz to push their lead to double-digits, 26-16, going into the locker room at halftime.

McNeese drained a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Hanlin to open the second half, but Carrejo answered with a bucket for Lamesa to make the score, 29-18, with less than a minute gone in the third quarter. McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Zoey Sifuentes and made one-of-two shots at the line, and Edgemon followed it up with a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Carrejo. She converted the free throw to make the score, 32-18, with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter.

Carrejo was fouled on an attempt by Saenz and sank both shots at the line for Lamesa, but the Lady Cats quickly responded as Edgemon drained a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Cruz to push their lead to, 35-20. With 3:48 remaining in the third, Hill was fouled on an attempt by Edgemon; she converted both free throws and Laila Vasquez followed it up with a deep three from the top of the key off of an assist from Reagan Derington, cutting the score, 35-25.

Reagan Derington kept the rally going for Lamesa with a fast-break lay-up off of a Littlefield turnover, but Saenz was able to stop the bleeding with a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Kaeleigh Logan, extending their lead back out to, 38-27, with just over two minutes to play in the quarter.

Rivera knocked down a deep two from the right elbow, but Edgemon answered with a lay-up, as Lamesa took a time out with 35.7 seconds to play in the third, trailing Littlefield, 40-29. The score would stand going into the final quarter of play.

Vasquez was fouled on a threepoint attempt by Cruz to open the fourth quarter and made two-ofthree shots at the line to cut the lead to single digits for Littlefield, 40- 31, but on the other end, McNeese was fouled on an attempt by Madison Derington, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots at the line, pushing the lead back to double digits, 41-31, with 7:32 remaining in the contest.

Edgemon dropped in a lay-up on the left side for Littlefield, but on the other end, Vasquez was fouled on the floor by McNeese, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. Vasquez went to the line for a one-in-one opportunity and converted both shots at the line to keep it a 10-point game, 43-33.

With five minutes to play in the game, Reagan Derington was fouled on the floor by Elizondo, sending her to the line for a onein- one. She made the first shot and missed the second, but Sifuentes followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Madison Derington, cutting the lead to, 4336, with 4:26 remaining.

Hanlin grabbed a steal from Vasquez and took it the other way for a fast- break lay- up, as Littlefield took a time out with 3:32 to play in the game. With just over a minute to play, McNeese went to the line for a one-in-one after being fouled on the floor by Chrisalynn Uresti. She made both shots at the line to extend the Lady Cats’ lead to, 47-36. With time winding down in the game, Hanlin split a pair of free throws, but Vasquez answered with a three from the right elbow at the buzzer, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 48-39.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McNeese and Edgemon, who each tallied 13 points. Elizondo and Cruz each chipped in seven points, while Hanlin added with five points, and Saenz finished with three points in the contest.

The Lady Cats were open on Tuesday and will continue district play on Friday with a road game against the Muleshoe Lady Mules for their second meeting of district play.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
