LADY CATS FALL ON THE ROAD TO SLATON, 71-40

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team fell on the road to the Slaton Tigerettes on Friday, 71-40, in their second meeting of district play.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 19-11 overall, 85 in district play.

Kolbi McCord opened the contest with a three for the Tigerettes from the left wing, but on the other end, Amoni Jefferson picked up a steal from Serenity McNabb and was fouled on the shot attempt by Kashlyn Conkin. She converted both shots at the line, trimming the lead to, 3-2, with 6:47 to play in the opening quarter.

Zalise Davis drove the lane, dumping the ball off to Nia Cleveland for a lay-up and Jefferson followed it up with a jumper from the free-throw line, off of the assist from Madison Williams, putting the Lady Cats in front, 6-3. Brocoiya Harris answered with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Davis. She converted the free throw to tie the game, 6-6, with 5:26 to play in the quarter.

McCord knocked down a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Harris, but on the other end, Jefferson dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Harris. She sank the free throw to keep the game tied, 9-9. On their next possession, Jefferson grabbed a steal from Jazarae Wilborn and took it tot he hoop for a layup, putting Littlefield back in front, 11-9, with 3:54 to play in the first quarter.

Jefferson hit Cobi Saldana in transition for a lay-up, as Slaton took a time out with 3:19 to play in the quarter, trailing, 13-9. Out of the break, Harris got out on the break and dropped in a layup for Slaton, but on the other end, Davis was fouled on an attempt by McCord, earning a trip to the line. She converted both shots at the line, pushing their lead to, 15-11. With under a minute to go in the quarter, Jefferson dropped in a layup off of an assist from Williams, but Lucy Dominguez answered with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Kali Stafford to close out the first quarter with Littlefield in front, 17-14.

McNabb opened the second frame with a three from the right wing off of an inbound play, but Davis responded with a three of her own from the right elbow, off of an assist from Williams, making the score, 2017. Harris dropped in a baby-hook in the lane off of an assist from McNabb and Harris would find McCord on the fast-break on the next possession for a layup, putting the Tigerettes back in front, 21-20, with 6:08 to play in the half.

McCord was fouled on an attempt by Davis, her second; she split the attempts at the line, and Harris followed it up with a layup off of an assist from Conkin, pushing their lead to, 24-20. McCord was fouled again in transition by Abby Rodriguez; this time she converted both shots at the line, stretching their lead to, 26-20, with just under five minutes to play in the half.

McNabb drained a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Harris, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:14 to go in the first half, trailing Slaton, 29-20. Out of the break, Harris picked up a steal and took it the other way for a fastbreak lay-up and Stafford kept the run going with a three from the right wing, off of an assist from Harris, making the score, 34-20.

With 2:20 to play in the second quarter, McNabb split a pair of free throws, after Davis picked up her third foul of the game, but on the other end, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Harris. She converted both shots at the line to end the scoring drought for Littlefield, making the score, 35- 22. Harris answered with a lay-up in the paint, but Jefferson closed out the first half with a lay-up off of the assist from Saldana, trimming the lead to, 37-24, going into the locker room at halftime.

Dominguez opened the seond half with a lay-up, as McCord followed it up with a steal on the defensive end from Davis, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up to push their lead to, 41-24. Harris hit McCord with an outlet pass for a quick lay- up, before Jefferson answered with a lay-up through contact, off of an assist from Saldana, making the score, 43-26.

Dominguez split a pair of free throws and McNabb followed it up with a steal that led to a fast-break layup, extending the lead to, 46-26, with 5:07 remaining in the third quarter. Williams drew a shooting foul on Wilborn and converted both shots at the line for Littlefield, but on the other end, Harris grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped in the put-back to stretch their lead back out to, 48-28.

With under two minutes to play in the third quarter, Conkin drained a three from the right elbow, but on the other end, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Wilborn. She converted both shots at the line to make the score, 51-30. With under a minute to go in the quarter, Dominguez picked up a steal in their own end and dropped it in for a layup, but Jefferson would respond, as she dropped in a put-back to close out the third quarter with Slaton in front, 53-32.

Jefferson grabbed a steal and dished it ahead to Williams in transition for a layup, but on the other end Harris grabbed an offensive rebound off of a miss by Conkin and dropped it in for a put- back, making the score, 55- 34. Jefferson dropped in a lay-up through contact from Harris, but Harris responded on the other end with a lay-up, off of an assist from McCord, making the score, 57-36.

Harris split a pair of free throws after being fouled by Jefferson, and McCord knocked down a pair after Davis picked up her fourth foul of the game, making the score, 61-36, with under four minutes to play. Anelise Luera knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Cleveland and Slaton took a time out with 3:06 to play, to prevent a jump ball. Out of the break, Luera dropped in a lay-up, but Williams answered with a three from the right elbow to make the score, 65-39.

Slaton would close out the game on a, 6-1, scoring run, taking the contest, 7140.

Jefferson led the Lady Cats in scoring with 24 points, while Williams chipped in seven points and Davis contributed five points. Saldana and Cleveland, each finished with two points in the contest.

The Lady Cats hosted Friona on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday with a road game against the Dimmitt Bobbies.
