The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team dropped their home contest to Lubbock-Cooper Liberty on Tuesday, 48-37.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 5-5 overall on the year.
Zalise Davis grabbed the opening tip-off and took it to the hoop for a quick layup to put the Lady Cats in front, 2- 0, but Reagan Wrenn answered with a lay- up for Liberty and Alyssa Ferguson followed it up with a three from the left elbow to put the Lady Patriots in front, 5-2. With just over six minutes left to play in the opening quarter, Amoni Jefferson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Cobi Saldana to trim the lead to, 5-4.
Liberty took a time out to talk things over with 5:22 left to play in the first quarter, and out of the break, Mikah Henderson and Camryn Weatherly dropped in back-to-back lay-ups off of assists from Abby Dallas, stretching their lead to, 9-4, as Littlefield took a time out with 3:48 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Liberty drained a three to push their lead to, 12-4, but on the other end, Saldana was fouled on an attempt by Avery Atcheson. She sank both free throws to make it a sixpoint game, 12-6.
Henderson buried a three for Liberty from the left wing and Wrenn followed it up with a mid- range jumper from the right wing, but on the other end, Davis was fouled on an attempt by Henderson, her second foul of the game. Davis converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 17-8, with 1:31 to play in the quarter.
Henderson picked up a steal from Davis, taking it the other way for a fastbreak lay-up, pushing their lead to, 19-8, as the first quarter came to a close.
Preslee Romero drew a shooting foul on Aubree Richardson to open the second frame. She converted both shots at the line, but Madison Williams answered with a three from the left wing and followed it up with a lay-up, to slice the lead to, 21-13, with 6:47 left to play in the first half.
With 5:14 left to play in the half, Williams bounced a pass to Saldana in transition for a fast-break lay-up, trimming the lead to, 21-15, as Liberty took a time out to slow down Littlefield’s momentum. Out of the break, Dallas and Wrenn dropped in back-to-back buckets for the Lady Patriots, but Davis responded with a lay-up in transition, making the score, 25-17.
Baylee Fillingim took a charge on Jefferson with 3:16 to play, but Williams would grab a steal and take it the other way for a fastbreak lay-up, making the score, 25-19. With time winding down in the half, Ferguson dropped in a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Williams. She converted the free throw to make the score, 28-19.
In the closing seconds of the half, Williams would drive the left side for a layup, drawing an and-one foul on Atcheson, her third foul of the game. Williams converted the free throw, but the Lady Patriots would race down court, as Dallas dropped in a lay-up at the buzzer off of the assist from Henderson, making the score, 30-22, going into the locker room at halftime.
Wrenn and Dallas opened the second half with backto- back lay-ups for Liberty, and with 5:33 to play in the third quarter, Jefferson drove the middle for a layup to make it a 10-point game, 34-24. Liberty took a time out with 5:30 remaining in the third, and out of the break, Jefferson drained a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Saldana and Williams followed it up with a three from the left elbow, slicing the lead to, 34-30, as Liberty quickly took another time out with 4:29 to play in the quarter.
With 2:39 to play in the quarter, Jefferson picked up a steal from Dallas, dishing the outlet pass to Williams, who was fouled on an attempt by Romero. She made one-of-two shots at the line to make it a threepoint game, 34- 31. Henderson was fouled on an attempt by Saldana with just over two minutes to play in the third. She converted both shots at the line, making the score, 36-31.
Henderson drove the left side for a lay-up, off of the assist from Dallas, but on the other end, Jefferson was fouled on an attempt by Romero, her second foul of the game. Jefferson made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 32-38, heading into the final quarter of play.
Wrenn was fouled on an attempt by Jefferson and split the free throws to open the fourth quarter, but Jefferson answered with a three from the left wing to make it a four-point game, 39-35. Dallas made threeof- four free throws on two trips to the line, after being fouled by Abby Rodriguez and Davis, but on the other end, Williams was fouled on an attempt by Weatherly. She split the attempts at the line, making the score, 4236, with 4:48 left to play.
Liberty went on a, 6-0, scoring run, before Jefferson split a pair of free throws, as the Lady Cats fell at home to Liberty, 4837.
Williams led the Lady Cats in scoring with 15 points, while Jefferson tallied 12 points, and Davis added six points. Saldana finished with four points in the contest.
