LADY CATS FALL TO LADY CUBS, 67-30

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team suffered their second loss of the season to the Brownfield Lady Cubs on the road on Friday, 67-30.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 20-10 overall, 8-3 in district play.

Dabria Blackwell hit Gabi Fields with an outlet pass for a lay-up to open the contest, and Tia Johnson followed it up with a jumper from the freethrow line to extend their lead to, 4-0. Deja Johnson dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Lindsey Herrera and Fields followed it up with a three from the right elbow to extend their lead to, 10-3. With 4:15 left to play in the quarter, Fields was fouled on an attempt by Emily Champion. Fields converted both free throws and Tia Johnson and Brianne Franco dropped in back-to-back layups off of assist from Dabria Blackwell, pushing their lead to, 16-3.

With under one minute to play in the opening quarter, Cruz took a charge on Fields, but on the next play, Ashley Ramirez was fouled on an attempt by Ashtyn Parker. She sank both free throws to make the score, 18-3, as the first quarter came to a close.

Shy’La Blackwell opened the second quarter with a putback off of a miss by Rhianna Miranda and on the next play, Miranda was fouled on a rebound by Parker, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws to extend the lead to, 22-3.

Brookelyn Gau was fouled on an attempt by Deja Johnson and split the free throws, as Brownfield took a time out with 3:45 left to play in the half, leading the Lady Cats, 22-4. Out of the break, Tia Johnson converted a pair of free throws, but Cruz answered, taking her defender off the dribble for a runner from the left side to trim the lead to, 24-6.

Miranda took a charge on Huey and Fields followed it up with a dish to Franco for a layup, before burying a three from the right elbow to send them into the locker room at halftime in front of Littlefield, 29-6.

Brownfield opened the third quarter on a, 5-0, scoring run, before Champion dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Parker to make the score, 34-8, with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter. Fields picked up a steal and took it in for a layup and Ramirez followed it up with a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Tia Johnson, making the score, 39-8.

With just under 2:30 to play in the quarter, Dabria Blackwell was fouled on an attempt by Parker, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. She sank both free throws, but Jazmine Barios answered with a three from the left elbow to cut the lead to, 41-11, with under two minutes to play in the quarter.

Gau hit Barios on a cut to the basket for a lay-up, but in the closing seconds of the quarter, Fields drove to the basket for a lay-up, making the score, 44-13, heading into the final quarter of play.

Brownfield opened the fourth quarter on a, 10-0, scoring run before Cruz drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Champion to make the score, 54-16, with 5:26 remaining in the game. The Lady Cubs knocked down a jumper, but Barios answered with a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Ramirez. She converted the free throw to trim the lead to, 56-22.

Franco dropped in a lay-up for Brownfield, but on the next play, Cruz was fouled on the floor by Shy’La Blackwell, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws to make the score, 58-24, as the Lady Cats took a time out with 3:06 remaining. Out of the break, Shy’La Blackwell knocked down a jumper, but on the next play, Champion was fouled on the floor by Herrera, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She split the free throws, making the score, 61-25.

Fields hit Tia Johnson for a lay-up and then found Shy’La Blackwell for a lay-up on the next play, before Cruz was fouled on the floor by Dabria Blackwell. She converted both free throws to make the score, 65-27.

With under one minute to play, Miranda took a charge on Gau, who fouled out of the contest and Shy’La Blackwell followed it up with a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 67-27. Champion would knock down a three from the right elbow to close out the game with the Lady Cats falling to Brownfield, 67-30.

Cruz led the team in scoring with 15 points, while Barios chipped in eight points, Champion added six points and Gau finished with one point.

The Lady Cats hosted Muleshoe on Tuesday to close out the regular season. Results were not available at press time. They will await their Class 3A Bi-District Playoff match-up.
