The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team came up short at the Farwell Tournament on Saturday, as they fell to the host team Farwell Lady Blue in the Championship game, 73-39.
With the loss, the Lady Cats finished tournament play, 2-1, moving to 5-8 overall on the season.
The Lady Blue opened the game on a, 7-0, scoring run, before Amiah Elizondo dropped in a put-back of of a miss by Maerysa Saenz to trim the lead to, 7-2, with 5:30 remaining in the opening quarter. On the next play, Whitten was fouled on an attempt by Elizondo; she split the free throws, and Trimble followed it up with a layup, stretching their lead to, 10-2 With 3:50 remaining in the quarter, Trimble was fouled on a fastbreak attempt by Madison McNeese. She made one-of-two shots at the line to push the lead to, 11-2, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, McNeese buried a three from the left elbow, off of the assist from Saenz and followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Saenz to cut the lead to, 11-7, with under one minute to play in the first.
Gilbreath and Smith dropped in back-to-back lay-ups to close out the first quarter for the Lady Blue, with Farwell leading, 15-7.
Trimble dropped in a lay-up over two Lady Cat defenders to open the second frame, but on the other end, Kyndal Edgemon was fouled on an attempt by Trimble, earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 17-9. With 6:29 left to play in the half, Littlefield took a time out to prevent a turnover, but out of the break, Whitten buried a three from the left elbow, stretching the lead to, 20-9.
Edgemon was fouled on an attempt by Trimble with 4:28 to play in the half; she sank both free throws, making the score, 20-11, but Farwell answered, as Smith drained a three from the left wing, pushing their lead back out to, 2311. Barrios took a charge on Whitten and on the other end, Edgemon was fouled on the floor by L. Richey. She converted both shots on the one-in-one opportunity to cut the lead to, 23-13, with just over two minutes to play in the half.
With just over one minute remaining in the half, Gilbreath was fouled on an attempt by Edgemon; she split the free throws and McNeese answered with a drive to the basket for a lay-up to cut the lead to, 24-15. With time winding down in the half, Gilbreath was fouled on an attempt by McNeese and split the free throws, making the score, 2515, going into the locker room at halftime.
Farwell opened the second half on a, 9-0, scoring run, before Edgemon split a pair of free throws for the Lady Cats to trim the lead to, 34-16, with 5:32 to play in the third quarter. Trimble and McNeese exchanged lay-ups and Trimble answered with another bucket to push the Lady Blue lead to, 38-18, with 4:37 remaining in the quarter.
McNeese knocked down a deep three from the top of the key, but Trimble dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Baldwin to stretch their lead to, 40-21. Edgemon scored a lay-up in transition and McNeese followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal to cut the lead to, 40-25, with 3:09 to play in the third. Jaime was fouled on an attempt by Arianna Cruz and split the free throws and Baldwin followed it up with a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Benoit, pushing their lead back out to, 4325.
Farwell closed out the third quarter on a, 7-3, scoring run to take a, 50-28, lead into the final quarter of play.
Trimble dropped in a lay-up in transition, sparking a, 10-0, run to open the final quarter of play. Edgemon was fouled on an attempt by L. Richey and made oneof- two shots at the line to make the score, 60-29. Farwell took a time out with 4:08 to play and out of the break, Kennadi Hanlin was fouled on the floor by Baldwin. She sank both free throws to trim the lead to, 60-31, but Baldwin answered with a put-back off of the miss by Smith to extend the lead back out to, 62-31.
Edgemon dropped in a bucket, but on the other end, Baldwin was ofuled on the floor by Kamryn Meiwes; she split the free throws to make the score, 63-33.
Edgemon buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Cruz, but Farwell answered with a, 5-0, run to stretch their lead to, 68-36, with just over two minutes to play in the game. McNeeese buried a three from the right elbow, but Harris dropped in a layup on the left side and Smith drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Gilbreath to close out the game, with Littlefield falling to the Lady Blue, 73-39.
The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McNeese, who tallied 19 points, and Edgemon, who finished with 15 points. Hanlin tallied three points, while Elizondo finished with two points in the contest.
The Lady Cats opened district play on Tuesday night at home against Friona. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on the road on Friday, as the take on Lamesa.
