Lady cats cruise by Bobbies, 54-25

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team defeated the Dimmitt Bobbies on Friday, 54-25, in their second meeting of district play to sweep the season series.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 19-6 overall, 8-0 in district play.

Marysa Saenz opened the contest with a three from the right elbow for the Lady Cats and Kennadi Hanlin followed it up with a floater in the lane off of an assist from Arianna Cruz, pushing their lead to, 5-0. Cruz kept it going with a lay-up off of a steal, but Dimmitt’s Jocelyn Jimenez answered with a jumper from the right elbow to get the Bobbies on the board, trailing the Lady Cats, 7-2, with 6:08 to play in the opening quarter.

Amiah Elizondo took a charge on Braylynn Chavira, but Littlefield couldn’t capitalize, as Kriselle Ramirez knocked down a jumper from the right side, cutting the lead to, 7-4, with 3:31 to play in the first quarter. Elizondo knocked down a jumper from the right elbow and Cruz followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal in their own end, extending their lead to, 11-4, as Dimmitt took a time out with 2:59 left to play in the first.

Out of the break, Cali Saldana drained a three from the right wing off of an assist from Hanlin, but Alexis Quiroz responded with a layup for the Bobbies to make the score, 14-6. With time winding down in the quarter, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Milee Thomas and converted both free throws to push their lead to, 16-6, as the first quarter came to a close.

Saenz buried a three from the right elbow off of an assist from Ari Castillo to get the second quarter under way and Castillo followed it up with a drive along the right baseline for a lay-up, stretching their lead to, 21-6, with 6:20 to play in the first half. Hanlin dropped in a lay-up off of a steal, as Dimmitt took a time out to try and kill Littlefield’s momentum with 5:53 to play in the first half.

Jazmine Rosalez dropped in a runner in the lane and Elizondo followed it up with a lay-up off of an assist from Hanlin, pushing their lead to, 27-6. Saldana knocked down a jumper from the left wing off of an assist from Cruz and with 2:24 left to play in the half, Hanlin drained a jumper from the elbow off of an assist from Cruz, stretching their lead to, 31-6.

Elizondo and Makayla Delgado exchanged put-backs to close out the half with Littlefield in front, 338.

Hanlin opened the second half with a lay-up off of a steal and Cruz dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Hanlin, before drained a three from the wing off of another assist from Hanlin, extending their lead to, 40-8, with 5:34 to play in the third quarter. Ramirez knocked down a jumper from the left elbow and Thomas dropped in a lay-up for the Bobbies, trimming the lead to, 4012.

Thomas followed it up with a putback off of her own miss and Ramirez kept the rally going with a three from the right elbow, cutting the lead to, 40-17, with under two minutes to play in the quarter. Elizondo knocked down a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Hanlin, but on the other end, Jimenez was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two free throws and Meah Espinoza followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, cutting the lead to, 43-20, as the third quarter came to a close.

Cruz opened the fourth quarter with a back-door cut off of the assist from Hanlin and on their next possession, Hanlin was fouled on a put-back attempt by Espinoza; she converted both shots at the line to stretch the lead to, 47-20. Castillo drove the left side of the basket for a lay-up and Hanlin followed it up with a floater on the right side, as Dimmitt took a time out with 3:28 left to play, trailing Littlefield, 51-20.

Out of the break, Thomas dropped in a put-back for the Bobbies and followed it up with a layup to cut the lead to 51-24. With 1:06 left to play, Thomas was fouled on an attempt and made one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 51-25. With under a minute to play, Nevaeh Esquibel drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Rosalez, as Littlefield took the contest, 54-25.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by Hanlin, who tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and one block, while Cruz tallied 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Saldana contributed seven points, three rebounds and two steals, while Saenz chipped in six points and seven rebounds.

Elizondo contributed six points, two assists, one rebound, one steal and one block, while Castillo tallied four points, six rebounds, five steals and one assist, and Esquibel added three points, one rebound and one steal. Rosalez added two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal and Jouett finished with three rebounds, one steal and one block.

The Lady Cats hosted the Brownfield Lady Cubs on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will travel to Lamesa next Tuesday for their second meeting with the Lady Tornadoes.
