The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team dropped their home contest to the Floydada Lady Wind on Tuesday, 57-46, at Wildcat Gym.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 7-4 overall on the season.
Kennadi Hanlin pulled up for a jumper from the left elbow to open the contest, but Zay Santos dropped in a floater from the right wing to tie the game, 2-2. With 4:47 to play in the opening quarter, Santos was called for a five-second call, as she couldn’t get the ball inbounds, turning it over to Littlefield.
With 3:33 to play in the quarter, Soriah Wickware dropped in a putback off of the miss by Santos to put the Lady Wind in front, as they called for a time out, leading, 4-2. Out of the break, Ari Castillo knocked down a jumper from the right elbow in transition, off of the assist from Hanlin to tie the game, 4-4, and Hanlin followed it up with a jumper in the lane, off of the assist from Marysa Saenz to put Littlefield back in front, 6-4.
Desiree Delafuente knocked down a three from the right wing off of the assist from Santos and with just over a minute remaining in the quarter, Analise Perez buried a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Santos, stretching their lead to, 10-6. Hanlin would answer for the Lady Cats, as she knocked down a three from the left wing off of the assist fromArianna Cruz, but with time winding down in the first quarter, Wickware scored on a put-back, drawing an and-one foul onAmiah Elizondo. She converted the free throw to make the score, 13-9, as the first quarter came to a close.
Santos hit Wickware with the outlet pass on the fast-break to stretch their lead to, 15-9, but Castillo quickly answered with a lay-up to trim the lead back to, 15-11.With just under a minute gone in the second frame, Sierra Snowden dropped in a lay-up, making the score, 17-11, and she followed it up with a short jumper from the right side to extend the lead to, 19-11, with with just under seven minute to go in the half.
Cruz was fouled on an attempt by Santos and split the free throws, making the score, 19-12, but Santos answerd on the other end with a pullup jumper in the lane, stretching the lead back out to, 21-12, with 6:15 to play in the half. On their next possession, Santos dished a pass to Snowden for a lay-up, but the Lady Cats would respond to end the scoring drought, as Jazmine Rosalez hit Cruz in transiton for a floater in the lane, making the score, 23-14, as Littlefield took a time out with 4:50 remaining in the first half.
Out of the break, Allyson Romero drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Santos, but with 3:25 to play in the half, Saenz grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt by Wickware. She split the attempts at the line, trimming the lead to, 26-15. Floydada took a time out with 3:13 to play in the half, and out of the break, Saenz picked up a steal from Ramirez in their own end and dropped in the easy lay-up to trim the lead to, 26-17.
The Lady Wind would respond, as Perez buried a three from the elbow to push their lead to double-digits, 2917. With 1:39 remaining in the half, Castillo was fouled on an attempt by Perez and converted both free throws to make the score, 29-19. With just over 10 seconds to play in the half, Cruz was fouled on the floor by Perez, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws, making the score, 29-21.
Jouett was fouled on a defensive rebound by Wickware, putting her on the line for free throws with one second remaining in the half. She made one-of-two shots from the line, making the score, 29-22, going into the locker room at halftime.
Cruz was fouled on an attempt by Mariah Garcia to opent he second half and she converted both free throws to make it a five-point Floydada lead, 29-24. Wickware answered with a layup off of the assist from Snowden and Snowden followed it up with a putback off of a miss by Wickware to push their lead back out to, 33-24, with 6:07 to play in the third quarter.
Santos dropped in a floater in the lane, drawing an and-one foul on Elizondo, but the free throw was no good, leaving the score, 35-24, with 5:37 remaining in the quarter. Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Snowden and converted one-of-two shots from the line, as Littlefield took a time out with 5:09 to play in the quarter, trailing Floydada, 35-25.
Out of the break, Castillo drove the lane for a lay-up and Saenz followed it up with a steal for a fast-break lay-up, cutting the lead to, 35-29. Hanlin scored on a lay-up with 3:07 to play in the quarter, trimming the lead to two possessions, 35-31. With 2:15 remaining in the third, Castillo was fouled on an attempt by Wickware; she made one-of-two free throws to make it a three-point game, 35-32.
With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Santos was fouled on an attempt by Saenz. She made one-oftwo shots from the line to make it a four-point Floydada lead, 36-32. Floydada took a time out with 1:37 to play to prevent a five-second call and out of the break, Santos took the ball strong to the hoop for a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 38-32.
With just over a minute remaining in the third, Ramirez was fouled on the floor by Cruz and converted both shots at the line to make it an eightpoint lead for the Lady Wind. Hanlin knocked down a jumper from the left side, but with time winding down in the quarter, Santos drove to the basket for a lay-up to make the score, 4234, heading into the final quarter of play.
Cruz took a charge on Wickware to open the fourth quarter and followed it up with a steal from Garcia, taking it to the hoop for a lay-up, as Floydada took a time out with 6:05 remaining in the contest. Out of the break, Ramirez hit Wickware for a lay-up in transition, but Cruz answered with a floater in the lane to trim the lead to, 44-38.
Perez was fouled on the floor by Hanlin, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. Perez split the free throws and shortly after Santos drew a foul and a technical was called on Littlefield’s bench. Santos made threeof- four shots from the line, but Cruz answered with a three from the right elbow to make it a six-point game, 4842, with 3:29 to play in the game.
Littlefield took a time out and out of the break, Santos was fouled on an attempt by Cruz, who fouled out of the contest. She converted both free throws and on the next play Ramirez was fouled on the floor by Saenz. She too converted both free throws to stretch the lead to, 52-42, with 1:45 remaining. Saenz dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Rosalez and Floydada took a time out leading, 5245, with 1:08 to play.
Out of the break, Wickware was fouled on the floor by Castillo, who fouled out of the contest with 1:05 left to play. Wickware split the free throws, but Saenz answered on the other end with a jumper from the left wing to cut the lead to, 53-45. Santos would close out the game going four-for-four from the line in the final 43 seconds, as Littlefield came up short, 57-46.
Cruz led the team in scoring with 15 points, and she was joined in doublefigures scoring by Hanlin, who finished with 12 points. Saenz and Castillo each tallied nine points, while Jouett finished with one point in the contest.
The Lady Cats were at the Farwell Tournament this weekend. Results were not available at press time. They begin district play on Tuesday with a road game against Denver City.
Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
