The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team got back into the win column on Tuesday night, as they went on the road and took down the Lady Eagles, 56-32.
With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 3-1 overall on the season.
Jazzy Chavira opened the contest with a three from the top of the key for the Lady Eagles, but Ari Castillo answered right back with a three of her own from the left elbow to tie the game, 3-3. Brec Wheeler responded with a lay-up off of the assist from Aniyah Puente, but Arianna Cruz answered with a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Kennadi Hanlin to put the Lady Cats in front, 6-5, with 6:45 to play in the opening quarter.
Marysa Saenz knocked down a jumper from the right elbow off of the assist from Cruz, but Wheeler answered on the other end with a lay-up to trim the lead to, 8-7, with 4:31 to play in the first quarter. With 3:38 to play in the quarter, Jazmine Rosalez was fouled on an attempt by Makynze Mendoza. She converted one-of-two free throws to push their lead to, 9-7.
Chavira would tie the game with a lay-up, but it was short-lived, as Cali Saldana dropped in a put-back off of a miss from Saenz, putting Littlefield back in front, 11-9. With under three minutes to play in the quarter, Kyndal Grimes dropped in a bucket to again tie the game, 1111, but on the other end, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Grimes, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to regain the lead for Littlefield, 13-11.
Castillo knocked down a turnaround lay-up in the lane to close out the first quarter with Littlefield in front, 15-11.
Castillo got the ball ahead to Amiah Elizondo on the break for a lay-up in transition to open the second frame and Saenz hit a cutting Elizondo for a bucket on the next play to push their lead to, 1911. Hanlin knocked down a jumper from the free- throw line, but Chavira answered with a three from the right elbow for the Lady Eagles, making the score, 21-14, with 5:59 to play in the half.
Elizondo buried a three from the right wing off of an assist from Cruz, but Roosevelt answered again, as Puente dished a pass inside to Wheeler for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 24-16. Castillo picked up a steal and dropped it in for a lay-up, making the score, 2616, as Roosevelt took a time out to talk things over with 4:38 remaining in the half.
Out of the break, the Lady Eagles knocked down a three from the left elbow, but Castillo answered on the other end with a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Wheeler. She missed the free throw leaving the score, 28-19, with 2:41 to play in the half. Danica Jouett dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Saenz and on their next possession, Saenz was fouled on the floor by Miley Rogers earning a trip to the line. She made one-of-two shots from the line, pushing their lead to, 3119.
With time winding down in the half, Saldana picked up as teal and drove to the basket for the fastbreak lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Mracle Harris. She converted the free throw to send the Lady Cats into the locker room with a, 34-19, halftime lead.
Wheeler was fouled on an attempt by Elizondo and split the free throws to open the second half, however on the other end, Hanlin was fouled on a fast-break attempt by Wheeler, sending her to the line for free throws. She split the attempts, pushing their lead to, 3520, with 7:15 to play in the third quarter. Saenz grabbed a steal and dished it ahead to Cruz for a layup, but Chavira responded for the Lady Eagles with a jumper from the left wing off of the assist from Puente, trimming the lead to, 3722.
With 4:38 to play in the third quarter, Saenz knocked down a jumper from the right wing, forcing Roosevelt to call a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Rosalez burried a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Cruz, as Roosevelt took another time out with 2:26 to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Puente. She made the first shot, but missed the second, however Elizondo was there for the offensive rebound, as she dished it to Jouett for a jumper from the left elbow to close out the third quarter with Littlefield in front, 45-22.
Littlefield opened the fourth quarter with a bucket, but on the other end, Wheeler dropped in a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Saenz. She missed on the free throw, but the Lady Eagles followed it up, as Chavira dropped in a floater in the lane, cutting the lead to, 47-26, with 6:30 to play in the game.
Cruz grabbed a steal from Puente and drove down for a fast-break lay-up, but Roosevlet answered again, as Avery Putman knocked down a three from the left elbow, cutting the lead to, 49-29, with 4:17 to play in the game. Putman knocked down a stop and pop jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from Aaliyah Franco, but on the other end, Elizondo was fouled on a put-back attempt by Wheeler. She made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 50-31.
Roosevlet split a pair of free throws after the foul by Jouett, but Saldana answered with a lay-up off of a steal to make the score, 5232. Castillo and Saldana would score back-to-back lay-ups to close out the contest, as Littlefield took the win over Roosevelt, 5632.
Castillo led the Lady Cats in scoring with 13 points, while Saldana netted nine points and Elizondo chipped in eight points. Cruz contributed seven points, while Hanlin tallied six points and Saenz finished with five points. Jouett and Rosalez finished with four points each in the contest.
The Lady Cats will be at Sundown on Monday to take on the Roughettes.
Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
