The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team dropped their second meeting of the season with the Shallowater Fillies on Monday, 17-0.
With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 13-6 overall, 5-3 in district play.
In the top of the first inning, Bryndle Ray battled at the plate, drawing a lead-off walk to give the Lady Cats a base runner, and Alyssa Torres followed it up with a single that fell behind Kambreigh Baker at shortstop. Abby Rodriguez struck out looking for out number one, and the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before Natalia Sanchez struck out swinging for out number two. Bri Aleman was thrown out at first on a dropped third strike to retire the side.
In the home half of the first, Kya Arana doubled over Torres in leftcenter field to lead things off for the Fillies, but Brinley Currington lined out to Cali Saldana in center field for out number one. Jaiden Luna singled on an error by Aleman, but Ray was there for the back-up to keep it on the infield and hold the runners at first and second.
Phoenix Navejar singled on an error by Myli Hernandez in right field and Kambreigh Baker followed it up with a two-RBI single to right-center field, and she took second on the throw to third, putting the Fillies in front, 2- 0. Sanchez got Skylar Stephenson to strike out swinging for out number two, but Gracie Banks knocked a two-RBI single through the right side to push their lead to, 4-0, before Taylor Jarrett struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Lady Cats couldn’t get anything going offensively in the top of the second inning, as Saldana struck out swinging for out number one. Maggie McNeese chopped out to Baker at shortstop for out number two and Hernandez grounded out to Baker at shortstop to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the inning, Sanchez picked up a quick out, as she got Kassidy Dutra to strike out swinging for out number one. Currington singled through the right side and the Fillies laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Hannah Lopez and thrown to first for the out, as Currington advanced to second on the play with two outs.
Luna singled up the middle to put runners on the corners and Navejar follwed it up with an RBIsingle up the middle to stretch their lead to, 5-0. Baker singled up the middle to push the lead to, 6-0, and Skylar Stephenson singled to right field to load the bases for Shallowater.
Banks unloaded the bases with a three-RBI double to right-center field, extending their lead to, 9-0, before Jarrett grounded out to Rodriguez at second base to end the inning.
The Lady Cats’ offensive struggles continued in the third inning, as Lopez struck out swinging for out number one. Ray drew a walk, but she was called out for leaving first base early for out number two. Torres would strike out swinging to end the inning.
Amaya McCanick relieved Sanchez in the circle for the Lady Cats to begin the third inning, as Dutra was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and she took second on a pitch and third on the throw down to second that rolled into center field, before Currington hit a sacrifice fly ball to Torres in deep left field that allowed Arana to tagup and score, stretching the lead to, 10-0.
Shallowater singled up the middle to put a runner on and Luna followed it up with a single to right field, before Navejar struck out swinging for out number two. Baker drew a walk to load the bases and Stephenson ripped a three-RBI double to right-center field, making the score, 13-0. Banks, though, would ground out to Sanchez at second base to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, McCanick singled on an infield hit to shortstop, but Sanchez flew out to Luna in center field for out number one and Aleman struck out swinging for out number two. Saldana would fly out to Stephenson in left field to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the inning, McCanick hit Jarrett with a pitch, but Dutra flew out to Saldana in center field for out number one. Currington singled up the middle and the Fillies followed it up with an RBI-single to right field to extend the lead to, 14-0. Luna would end it with a three-run walk-off homerun to left field, as the Lady Cats fell to Shallowater on the road, 17-0.
Sanchez started in the circle pitching two innings, giving up nine hits and nine runs, three of which were earned; she also had three strikeouts. McCanick went 1.1 innings in the circle, giving up six hits, two walks and eight runs, while striking out one batter.
The Lady Cats hosted Idalou on Saturday for their second meeting of the season. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday, April 8th at Muleshoe.
First pitch is schedule for 5 p.m.
