Lady Cats bounce back to slay Lady Cubs in four sets, 3-1

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team bounced back after losing the first set, 9-25, Saturday in Brownfield to take the next three, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-13, winning the match, 3-1.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 11-7 overall on the season.

The Lady Cats never really got going in set one, as they fell behind in the match, 0-1.

But, in set two, Madi Brown served up four consecutive points, before Brownfield delivered a kill off of Myli Hernandez to make the score, 4-1. Bri Valdez sent a hit out of bounds to trim the lead to, 4-2, but Cali Saldana delivered a kill off of Lucy Guzman to push their lead back out to, 5-2.

Brailee Franco sent a hit into the net for the Lady Cubs and Cali Saldana followed it up with an ace to stretch their lead to, 7-2, before Madi Williams hit the foul pole with a tip, making the score, 7- 3. Brownfield would score back-toback points on Littlefield miscues, before they were called for a carry turning the serve back over to Littlefield with the score, 8-5.

Williams served up an ace, before sending her next serve out of bounds to make the score, 9-6. The teams exchanged points, before Kenzie Gutierrez sent a hit into the net, making the score, 11-7. Jaylyn Gonzales was called for a doublehit and Gutierrez followed it up with a hit into the net, pushing the Lady Cat lead to, 13-7.

A Brownfield rally would bring them to withing three points, after an ace from the Lady Cubs, making the score, 13-10, but on the next play, a block by Cali Saldana was hit out of bounds by Jasmyn Rodriguez, stretching the lead back out to, 14-10. Valdez had her serve sail out of bounds, but Cali Saldana delivered a kill and on the next play, the Lady Cubs were called for four hits, making the score, 16-11.

Brown sent a serve sailing out of bounds, but Cali Saldana again responded with a kill for the Lady Cats, making the score, 17-12. Brownfield took a time out, and out of the break, Amea Cerveny sent a kill out of bounds, pushing the lead to, 18-12. Cobi Saldana sent a tip into the net and Franco followed it up with a kill in front of Brown to cut the lead to, 18-14.

Gonzales sent a kill out of bounds and Franco hit a ball into the net, before Gonzales delivered a kill off of the block attempt from sophomore, Maggie McNeese, making the score, 20-15. Brownfield would draw within two points after delivering a kill on the sideline to make the score, 23- 21, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, junior, Lyric Rios, delivered a kill off of Guzman and Rodriguez sent a hit into the net, to make the score, 25-21, as Littlefield evened the match, 1-1.

Brownfield jumped out to a, 1-3, lead in set three, but Shem Gurrea sent a serve short of the net and Cali Saldana tipped the net for a kill to tie things up, 3-3. She followed it up with an ace off of Azanae Dominguez, but her next serve fell short of the net, keeping the set knotted up, 4-4. Brownfield couldn’t capitalize, as Gonzales sent a kill sailing out of bounds to make the score, 5-4.

Hernandez dropped a kill in front of Guzman, but Cobi Saldana sent a hit into the net on the next play, making the score, 6-5. A few plays later Brownfield would tie the set once more at, 7-7, after serving up an ace off of Brown. Rios was called for a double-hit for the Lady Cats and a tip from the Lady Cubs was tipped out of bounds by Cobi Saldana, putting Brownfield in front, 7-9.

Franco sent a hit into the net to end the rally for Brownfield, as Alyssa Torres followed it up with an ace to tie the set, 9-9. Franco was called for a double hit, bu Cali Saldana came across the net on a tip on the next play to keep the set tied, 10-10. Brownfield went on a four-point rally, before Littlefield responded with a kill from Rios off of Rodriguez, making the score, 1114.

Rios dropped in a tip over Cerveny for a kill and Valdez followed it up with an ace off of Guzman, making the score, 13-14. Cali Saldana tipped the net with a hit, as the ball was hit out of bounds by Cerveny, tying the set, 14-14. Cerveny answered with a kill in front of Brown and Valdez was called for a carry on the next play, putting the Lady Cubs back in front, 14-16.

Cali Saldana delivered a kill off of Guzman to make it a one-pioint game, but on the next play, she was blocked by Cerveny and the ball was hit into the net on the cover by Valdez, making the score, 15-17. Two plays later, Gurrea sent a serve short of the net, and Franco sent a ball sailing out of bounds on the next play, tying the set, 17-17. The teams continued to go back and forth until Cobi Saldana closed out the set with a kill in front of the block attempt from Gutierrez, making the score, 25-23, as Littlefield went up, 2-1 in the match.

Brownfield again jumped out to a, 1- 3, lead in set four, but Littlefield would battle back to tie the set, 4-4, after Gonzales sent a kill sailing out of bounds. Gonzales answered with a kill off of McNeese’s block attempt, but the Lady Cubs were called for a double-hit on the next play, keeping the set tied, 5-5.

A hit from Cobi Saldana fell in for a kill and Gurrea was called for a double hit on the next play, making the score, 7-5. Gurrea sent a hit into the net, pushing the lead to, 8-5, as Brownfield took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Gabby Medina sent a hit into the net and Franco followed it up with an ace off of Medina, bringing them within one point, 87.

Franco sent a serve short of the net for Brownfield and Gonzales sent a tip into the net, making the score, 10-7. Torres served up an ace on the back line for the Lady Cats, but a tip from Rodriguez on the next play fell in for a kill trimming the lead to, 11-8. The Lady Cubs served up an ace off of Gomez, but Williams responded with a kill off of Franco to make the score, 12-9.

The Lady Cubs were called for four hits and on the next play a tip by Gutierrez landed out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 14-9, as Brownfield took a time out. Out of the break, Franco was called for a double hit, before Samerrah Dickson delivered a kill off of Valdez to make the score, 15-10. Back- to- back miscues from Littlefield had the Lady Cubs within three points, before they sent back-to-back hits into the net from Gutierrez and Cerveny, stretching the Littlefield lead to, 17-12.

Littlefield would close out the set on an, 8-1, scoring run, taking set four, 25-13, and the match, 3-1.

The Lady Cats hosted Lamesa and Dimmitt for a dual on Tuesday at Wildcat Gym. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Saturday at home against Tahoka.
