Lady Cat comeback falls short at BRownfield, 6-5

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity softball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road on Saturday to the Brownfield Lady Cubs, 6-5.

With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to, 4-2 in district play.

The Lady Cats were kept quiet in the top half of the first inning, and in the bottom half of the side, the Lady Cubs first three batters reached base, before Brailee Franco singled to center field, but MyKenzie Price was able to shoot home for the force out at the plate for out number one. Malorie Martinez would drive in the games first run with an RBI-single to shallow right field, making the score, 1-0.

Brianne Franco followed it up with a two-RBI double over third base, but Martinez was thrown out at third by Alex Hernandez for out number two with the lead stretched to, 3-0. Melody Salas would pop up to Bryndle Ray in shallow left-center field to end the inning.

The score remained, 3-0, until the top of the third inning when the Lady Cats came to the plate.

Price popped up to Brianne Franco in the circle for out number one, but Cadence Sanchez singled over third base and took second on a throw down to first, before Ray drew a walk for Littlefield. Natalia Sanchez popped up to Malorie Martinez at first base for out number two, but Taryn Golden hit a shot up the middle and Cadence Sanchez scored on a thrown down to third that rolled into the outfield, making the score, 3-1. Golden took second on the play, but Alex Hernandez struck out swinging to retire the side.

In the bottom of the third, Jackie Castillo popped up to Golden at third in foul territory for out number one, but Brailee Franco drew a walk and took second on a past ball, before Malorie Martinez hit a sacrifice shot to Ray at shortstop, who got the out at first, but Brailee Franco advanced to third on the playwith two outs.

Brianne Franco hit an RBIsingle to right field to push their lead to, 4-1, and Salas drew a walk. The runners advanced on a past ball, before Mandy Martinez hit a grounder to Golden at third, but reached base on a throwing error to first, allowing another run to score to make the score, 5-1. Cadence Sanchez got Jaylyn Gonzales to strike out swinging to end the inning.

The Lady Cubs would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double up the middle by Brailee Franco, and the score would remain, 6-1, until the top of the seventh.

Natalia Sanchez flew out to Jackie Castillo in left-center field for out number one, but Golden doubled to the left-field fence and took third on a past ball, before Alex Hernandez singled up the middle to make the score, 6-2. Mylie Hernandez singled to center field and Alyssa Torres doubled on a throwing error to first by the third baseman, allowing Alex Hernandez to score, trimming the lead to, 6-3.

Kaeleigh Logan hit a two-RBI single under the glove of Kenley Salas at shortstop allowing two runs to score, as Cali Saldana came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher, with the score cut to, 6-5. Price singled down the third-base line, moving Saldana to second and Cadence Sanchez walked to load the bases, but Ray struck out swinging and Natalia Sanchez struck out looking to end the game, as the Lady Cats’ comeback fell short, 6-5.

Cadence Sanchez pitched a complete game throwing six innings, giving up six runs and three walks, while earning five strike outs.

The Lady Cats hosted Denver City on Tuesday for senior day. Results were not available at press time. They will close out the regu-lar season on Satruday with a home game against Lamesa.

First pitch is scheduled for noon.
