The Amherst Lady Bulldogs’ varsity basketball team hosted the Post Lady Lopes on Tuesday, falling at home, 55-17.
In the opening quarter, Amherst took a time out with 5:33 remaining to prevent a turnover, and out of the break, Adriana Rangel grabbed a steal and took it to the hoop for a fast-break lay-up off of the turnover by Amherst’s America Pacheco and with 4:05 left to play in the quarter, Serenity Sanchez was fouled on an attempt and sank both free throws for Post, stretching their lead to, 4-0.
With under four minutes left to play in the quarter, Ryleigh Matus dropped in a lay-up for Post, drawing an and-one foul on the play. She converted the free throw to push their lead to, 7-0. Post would turn defense into offense again on the next play, as Matus picked up an Amherst turnover in their own end and dropped it in for a lay-up, making the score, 9-0, as Head Coach Robert Herrera called a time out to talk things over.
Out of the break, Rangel drained a three from the right wing and on their next possession, Mullins was fouled on ana ttempt by Natahlie Muniz. She made one-of-two shots from the line to extend their lead to, 13-0, with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.
With 2:35 to play in the quarter, Desi Rodriquez was fouled on an attempt by Matus and split the free throws to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board, still trailing, 13-1. With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Mullins was fouled on an attempt by America Pacheco; she sank both free throws, pushing the lead to, 15-1.
Jaruda Schroth dropped in a layup to close out the quarter for Post with the Lady Lopes in front, 17-1.
Zemicha Foy hit Sanchez for a lay-up to open the second frame and Matus banked in a jumper from the right elbow to stretch their lead to, 21-1, with 6:39 left to play in the first half. Nevaya Segura followed it up with a lay-up on the right side, as Post took a time out with 5:35 remaining in the first half.
Out of the break, Schroth was fouled on an attempt and sank both free throws and on their next possession, Sanchez was fouled on an attempt by Nathalie Medrano. She too sank both free throws pushing their lead to, 29-1. Post kept it going offensively, as Matus scored a lay-up off of a steal and she drew a shooting foul on a fast-break on their next possession, earning a trip to the line.
Amherst took a time out with 3:40 remaining in the half, and out of the break, Matus sank both free throws, extending their lead to, 311. Rodriquez dropped in a lay-up for the Lady Bulldogs to end the scoring drought, but Post would close out the half with a jumper from the right elbow by Mullins, making the score, 33-3, going into the locker room at halftime.
Matus hit Mullins in transition for a lay-up, but Mireya Muniz answered with a lay- up for Amherst, making the score, 35-5, as Post took a time out to talk things over with 1:37 to play in the third. Out of the break, Mireya Muniz hit Rodriquez in transition for a lay-up, trimming the lead to, 35-7, going into the final quarter of play.
Sanchez opened the fourth quarter with a steal, taking it the other way for a lay- up, but Itzel Medrano buried a three from the right wing to make the score, 3710, with 7:33 left to play. Mireya Muniz dropped in a put-back off of her own miss, but on the other end, Schroth was fouled on an attempt, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws, making the score, 39-12.
Schroth would bank in a three from the left elbow and she followed it up on their next possession with a lay-up, stretching the lead back out to, 44-12, with 5:33 to play in the game. Mullins dropped in a lay-up off of a steal in their own end, as Amherst took a time out to talk things over with 5:16 to play in the game.
Out of the break, Schroth dropped in a put-back off of her own miss and Matus followed it up with a steal for a fast-break layup, extending the lead back out to, 50-12. With just over two minutes remaining, Schroth passed the ball down low to Mullins, who dropped in a lay-up for Post and on the next possession, Schroth split a pair of free throws to push the lead to, 53-12.
With under a minutes remaining, Mireya Muniz drained a three from the left elbow and Rodriquez followed it up with a lay-up, but Foy dropped in a put-back at the buzzer to close out the game, as Amherst fell to Post, 55-17.
Rodriguez and Mireya Muniz led the team in scoring with seven points apiece, while Itzel Medrano tallied three points.
